When you say you are using the internal TNC, do you mean using the
radio in APRS mode, and looking at the display screen? Are you
referring here to menu 601 INTERNAL TNC | DATA SPEED? This is the
on-air baud rate.

Now you're talking about the settings in menu 528 AUX | COM PORT
BAUDRATE, or menu 519 AUX | PC PORT BAUDRATE. The COM port is on the
back of the control head while the PC port is on the back of the TX/RX
unit. There is also another setting that you should not be playing
with, and that is the DATA Terminal Speed in menu 518 AUX | EXT. DATA
SPEED. That is only for use when using an external TNC connected to
the DATA terminal on the back of the TX/RX unit.

Let's get your oranges out of your apple cart.

The TM-D710A is a dual speed TNC. It can operate at both 1200 baud and
9600 baud on RF. This is the on air signalling rate. This has nothing
to do with the speed of that the radio is communicating with the
device attached to the COM port on the radio control head or via the
PC port on the back of the TX/RX unit.

Try plugging into the back of the control head, and watching the
incoming data as you press the TNC button on the D710 to get it into
Packet mode. You should see PACKET12 above the side of the radio that
says 144.390. That means you are on 144.390 running at 1200 baud in
packet mode. See if you can get access to the TNC that way.

2007-12-23 Thread David Flood
Russell,

It makes sense that if you're trying to receive and transmit 9600 baud APRS
that the serial port can't be set to a lower speed than that. The serial link
to the computer would then become an unwanted bottleneck.

But if you have the TNC to set to 1200 baud data but the radio only offers 9600
baud as the slowest comm port speed then they've eliminated some options that
the D700 has. Oh well.

So lets drop Xastir completely and eliminate that as a problem.

At this point I'd recommend getting the Kenwood MCP program for the D710 and
see if you can talk to the radio using your computer, the comm port, and your
cable. If that doesn't work then I'd recommend building a new cable from
scratch and/or getting the "official" cable if they make such an animal.

2007-12-23 Thread Russell Handorf

Thanks David,

I think it's that I had it configged for 9600 baud, not 1200. When I use
the internal TNC on the radio for 9600 Baud, I have no updates where as
1200 shows all the traffic.

The problem is when I try to tell the radio to use a different port
speed on the com port. 9600 baud is the lowest I can go! My options are
9600, 19200, 38400, and 57600.

Am I just SOoL? I'm about to call Kenwood to see if I can put it in a
lower speed on the Comm port.

Thanks

Try kicking down your serial speed on both the radio and the computer. You
also might want to make sure that all available serial wires are connected
not just the two data and the ground.

David,

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this is with the PC's built in
serial port. I do have two USB to Serial adapters; I'll give them a try,

I'd first try to find a computer with a real serial port. Failing that,
start trying different usb to serial adapters and hope you find one that
works.

all I see is a repeat about 20+ times of a string:

ok, so i just found on the website it has a USB cable so there is a PC
interface. Surprising they don't list that on the spec sheet

So what does anyone know about the Garmin Astro. It is sold to track

Any opinions as to whether or not it might work with Xastir?

Jim,

Very nifty device, but pricey as with all things Garmin.

Looking at the spec sheet, there doesn't appear to be data in or out
for the handheld unit, only a power adapter.

The next thought I had was what data format is the 'collar' unit
transmitting back to the handheld unit? This isn't listed on the spec
sheet, but if it is standard NMEA, I would think you would be able to
receive it on your 2-meter, than output it to a laptop. That's a lot of
IF's.

Why not make up a little waterproof beacon with a TT3?

I am sure more guys on here will have many more ideas then I.

Cheers,
