If they are in the USGS DRG standard format, they should tile
properly. At least the 1:24k ones, which are the format the code
was optimized for.

Yes. If you look around the USGS DRG site you can find details of
their standard format. They have a limited number of colors and are
arranged in strips. The unmodifed maps are in UTM projection and
have a white border. The Xastir code will strip off this border as
it displays and stretch the map into unprojected or lat/lon
projection.

Curt, I am definitely through using the CD/DVD's with the WA DRG's.
Have them sitting here in the box waiting for the upcoming Summer

Based on my reading it appears the correct answer is to reprocess the
files through TIFFCP and convert them. I'm unsure whether I should
convert them to strips or tiles. It looks like scanline format is out
since it doesn't allow random access when using compression. Between
strips and tiles, is there a preference on which Xastir can process
more efficiently for pan/zoom/update operations? At first glance I'm
guessing tiles would be the most efficient. Along with the goes the
question of recommended tile size. 16? 32? 64? 128?

The Xastir geotiff code is written to handle lines, not tiles.

I see two options:

1) Find another source for unmodified DRG's.

2) Do a Google search through the Xastir list to find the
parameters you need to convert those DRG's to.

Regarding #1: Where are you at? I have the complete set of WA
DRG's, unmodified. I lent out a set of CD's and a set of DVD's to
one Xastir user in Everett. I have another DVD here at home
somewhere, and another set of CD's at work. I'd rather keep my
hands on one set of each, but the guy I lent the other sets to
should be done by now.

Another possibility is that you might live near one of the people
I've lent them to before and can copy the DVD's, CD's, or files off
their hard drive. There are at least 4 or 5 people around mostly
western WA that should have them.

Yet another possibility: If you're near UW you should be able to go
to the library on campus and copy the CD's. They might have them
online now, not sure. I know they have the DOQQ's online and I've
been able to download a few and convert them for use with Xastir.

Curt,

I'm finally back in the US after 3 years in Baghdad. I'm living down
in Olympia and working at Ft. Lewis. Xastir with DRGs was a definite
winner last week when I was running all over the range trails at YTC.

I did a bit more googling and found "geotiffcp" which is exactly like
"tiffcp", but for geotiffs. DOH!!! I guess I should have looked a
bit harder. I can download the unmodified files, but the ones I tried
didn't seem to tile together properly.

I've got another trip coming up next week. Hopefully I'll have some
downtime at the hotel to try a few different combinations of
"geotiffcp".

When you say the Xastir code is written to handle lines, do you mean
scanlines are strips as defined in the tiff/geotiff spec?

I should be much more active again now that I'm back in CONUS.

[Xastir] DRG Error: Compression Algorithm Does Not Support Random Access

2008-05-29 Thread ZPO
Howdy!

I'm having an issue using the WA clipped DRGs from -
http://rocky2.ess.washington.edu/data/raster/drgclip/index.html - .

Some of the DRGs load fine, but the majority (especially the 24Ks)
give an error of "compression algorithm does not support random
access". After some Googling, it appears this means the tiff files
were written in non-sequential format during the clipping process. I
checked and it appears to be using PACKBITS compression and scanline
mode.

16? 32? 64? 128?

I tried using TIFFCP on one file and it dumped the GEOTIFF-specific
tags as TIFFCP doesn't know what to do with them.
is there an analog to TIFFCP buried somewhere in the GEOTIFF tools
that I haven't found yet? Fortunately, there are already TFW files
for each quad, but I'd like something a bit cleaner and standalone if
at all possible. Once I've done a few more tests I can batch them up
and do them all at once. Whatever method works best I'll post back to
the group. Thanks in advance for any pointers and hints.

Well, there's your problem! (right?) 'XPM and/or ImageMagick support have not been
compiled in." Isn't Image/GraphicsMagick required to display online maps? Also
suggest they use GraphicsMagick over ImageMagick due to the historical problems with
a dynamic API.

Admittedly I don't know enough to tell if this is relevant, but when I tried to
compile (on Fedora 9 - arghhh) from CVS sources without ImageMagick, I kept
getting an error about GraphicsMagick even though the GraphicsMagick library
was in /usr/lib and /etc/ld.so.conf contained that path:

Good point.

Could this also have to do with installing Xastir in a different
location using a pre-compiled binary? If so, you might try renaming
your .xastir directory to something else and restarting to have
Xastir fix up the paths in your per-user config file to match where
the executable is looking for things.

cd
mv .xastir .xastir.save
xastir &

This will cause Xastir to create a new default ~/.xastir directory
and contents for your use.

More explanation: Sometimes a pre-compiled binary might install in
the /opt or /usr areas instead of the /usr/local area. If so, you
can end up with a mismatch with the paths in your
~/.xastir/config/xastir.cnf file, but only if you're run some other
version of Xastir before that installed in a different spot.

Normally (if you compile Xastir yourself) maps go in
/usr/local/share/xastir/maps and subdirectories below that. If it's
a pre-compiled Xastir binary it may be looking in
/usr/share/xastir/maps or /opt/Xastir/share/xastir/maps for them.

Have you checked file ownership and permissions?

ls -l

It should be one of the above two ports. I think the 2nd one.

owwtcpport 8899
   The port number
owwlocalname /tmp/oww_trx_un

The name for the Unix socket on which Oww listens for connexions
from clients on the local host using the Oww client / server
   protocol. Set this blank
    to turn off
   this server.
txttcpport 8891
The port number on which Oww listens for connexions from clients
using text format. Set this to 0 to turn off this server.
txtname /tmp/oww_txtserve
The name for the Unix socket on which Oww listens for connexions
from clients on the local host using text format. Set this blank
    to turn off
   this server.
txtform $localtime%d/%m/%y , %H:%M:%S$ , $t1%7.1$,$tunit$ ,
$wsp%7.2$,$wspunit%5$,$wdrname%10$ ,$wdrdeg%5.1$ ,$wdrpoint%3$

You also need a "Networked WX" interface defined in order for Xastir
to connect to the OWW daemon. I don't recall which port number OWW
uses, so you'll need to look at the OWW docs to find out.

You can look in your "config.log" file to see if there is additional
info regarding that error. Sometimes it can be as simple as another
package that GM depends on which your package manager dependency
checking missed.

Xastir looks for GM/GM-devel first. If it is happy with them, it
will skip looking for IM/IM-devel. If not, it looks for IM/IM-devel
and will set up Xastir to use IM if found.

We generally prefer GM over IM because of inconsistencies that we've
had with IM in the past. Better to get GM in there if you can, so
check your config.log file and let us know what you find.

Well, there's your problem! (right?) 'XPM and/or ImageMagick support have not been

suggest they use GraphicsMagick over ImageMagick due to the historical problems with

[Xastir] Configure Interface paths

2008-05-29 Thread kim
>From the old xastir documents:

Enter in up to three UNPROTO paths. Xastir will assume the XX VIA part
of the UNPROTO path. There are three paths allowed so that your signal
will be heard if conditions are bad. If any of these are filled in
XASTIR will cycle through one of them at each transmission time. If you
are local, just a WIDE may be a good choice. If you are using low power
and/or are distant from a digi then RELAY, WIDE may work better. Or if
you know the call of your closest digi you may use XXXCALL, WIDE. Most
of you will only need one path. If you are in a remote area and your
signal is difficult to get out you may need more. Check with a local
group and ask what path may be best for your area. Some areas use the
more efficient flooding protocols, in which case you might use WIDE3-3
or RELAY,WIDE3-3.

What is meant by "XASTIR will cycle through one of them at each
transmission time."

If three paths are entered, does it randomly chose one of the three?

Set up an internet interface in Xastir.

Set your symbol to either the blue or the green weather symbol (it's

Tell Xastir you're a fixed station sending weather

Meaning they're not showing up in the Map Chooser? Try
Map->Configure->Reindex All Maps or similar. The maps may have an
older timestamp than the last reindex you did, so "Reindex New Maps"
which depends on timestamps may skip those files.

Xastir has Shapelib support built-in, so if you don't Shapelib
loaded in your OS, Xastir uses it's own private version. Should
work just fine.

[Xastir] How do I use shapefile maps?

2008-05-29 Thread John Dvoracek
I am having a lot of issues trying to get xastir running under Fedora 9
on a Thinkpad where xastir ran fine under Fedora 7. I'm also trying to
have this working by Saturday morning for an event. I've given up on
getting online maps working since there seems to be some bug with those
as also experienced by others. Instead I downloaded shapefile maps for
one Texas county, but xastir does not seem to recognize them. Hopefully
I am just installing them incorrectly. On startup xastir says it
supports shapefile maps:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# xastir
Built-in map types:
  gnis USGS GNIS Datapoints
   map APRSdos Maps
   map WinAPRS/MacAPRS/X-APRS Maps

Support for these additional map types has been compiled in:
geo Image Map (ImageMagick/GraphicsMagick library, many formats
allowed)
geo URL (Internet maps via libcurl library)
shp ESRI Shapefile Maps (Shapelib library)
tif USGS DRG Geotiff Topographic Maps (libgeotiff/libproj)
xpm X Pixmap Maps (XPM library)
festival_client: connect to server failed
SayText: Couldn't open socket to Festival
Indexing maps...
Finished indexing maps
*** Reading WX Alert log files
*** Done with WX Alert log files

I downloaded the Texas county shapefile maps from Texas A&M as
referenced in the xastir map wiki, then extracted and installed the
county of interest in my map directory as shown in this recursive
directory listing:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] maps]# ls -R
.:
GPS Online TX_Polygons TX_Polylines worldhi.map

./GPS:
placeholder

./Online:
CanadaTopo250k.geo terraserver-reflectivity.geo tigermap.geo
WMSRadar.geo
CanadaTopo50k.geo terraserver-topo.geo TXRadar.geo
terraserver.geo terraserver-urban.geo USRadar.geo

./TX_Polygons:
Bell_County.dbf Bell_County.shp Bell_County.shx

./TX_Polylines:
Bell_County.dbf Bell_County.prj Bell_County.shp Bell_County.shx

TX_Polyogns and TXPolylines show up as directories in the map chooser
dialog, but none of the maps within those directories show up. Do I
have to do something else to use shapefiles? Thanks for any help at
this late moment.
