Re: [Xastir] How to...

2008-09-09 Thread Keith Kaiser
I'll give this a try Curt, had not thought about multiple Xastir's
running. I really want to be able to track the first and last rider
plus the bulk of the riders all at the same time on the same screen
and keep the screen showing for that group (zoomed to fit).

Add it to the dream list I guess... lol.

Something that goes along with this would be the ability to have the
summary window for each of these stations open too, something that
shows their current lat/long, speed, altitude, etc. I know I can
display the information screen (and do) but it's a lot more than
needed and in anything but an easy to use UI.

Thanks. guys for all you do.

Yep we did!

The tactical callsign thing works great for special events. For
tracking individual stations the best I can suggest is to set up one
Xastir as the "master" station, with the "Server Ports" enabled
(Interface menu). You can track one station on that and zoom to
taste, or keep that one as the "overall view" map.

Start up another Xastir using the "-c /path/dir" flag on the
command-line, and connect it to the master instance (localhost port
2023). Set that one up to track a station. Repeat (with a
different path for each running instance). You'll have to configure
each of those new Xastir sessions as they'll be starting with a
clean default config file the first time you run them.

I did this sort of thing for the Seattle Marathon plus set up a
script to start up the various Xastir sessions in the right
directories and such. That way if I lost power or anything went
wrong, I could easily/quickly get back to the same configuration.

When I did an upgrade of my Kubuntu to the latest version, I lost my 'trail'
function in Xastir. (this happened to me before)
Installing a new version of Xastir didn't solve the problem, but a completely
new Xastir installation did solve the problem. (but I had to delete the old
config files first)

That's the reason why. :-)

I've never had a reason to delete the install or config files. I
have occasionally managed to corrupt a config file in my .xastir

Assuming that it was installed to standard locations:

To delete all of the per-user information, to into the home
directory for each user and type:

rm -rf .xastir

The current locations for installing the executables and associated
files are:

/usr/local/bin (xastir/xastir_udp_client/callpass)
/usr/local/man/man1/xastir.1
/usr/local/lib/xastir/*
/usr/local/share/xastir/*

The maps will be in /usr/local/share/xastir/maps. You might also
have put things in the "Counties", "fcc", "GNIS", and "sounds"
directories that you wish to keep.

So... Start deleting things in the above directories listed, but be
careful in the /usr/local/share/xastir/ area.

That said, there's usually no reason to delete anything. Newer
Xastir installs should replace important files. I never feel the
need to delete before an install, and I'm fairly sure I do more
installs than anyone else on the planet.

Look in the xastir/scripts directory for "fcc-get". If you have
"wget" already installed this script will go get the RAC and FCC
databases and install them for you. Do "less fcc-get" and you'll
see that you need to run it as root (so that it can install the
files once they're downloaded).

There is an easier solution, just type sudo passwd root from a terminal

the way your doing it could be a serious security issue as it sounds like
you are assigning root privileges to every user on the system, could be
