Re: [Xastir] Xastir, eee PC and a Garmin USB GPS?

2008-01-21 Thread Dan Zubey
You do want to use GPSd with Xastir, that'll come close to what you're
looking for.

I don't know if the USB GPS will work with the stock linux install on
the eee, but in any case, you're better off with a serial GPS and a good
serial/USB connector.

The thing to do is open up a terminal, plug the GPS in, and do a 'dmesg'
to see what device the GPS shows up as. Then you can configure GPSd for
that device, and tell Xastir to use GPSd.

2008-01-21 Thread Richard Polivka
Serial/USB converters have vendor/product ID's. If the converter that is being
used for the GPS dongle does not register, no comms will take place.

Best place to check to see if your system is recognizing the unit is to plug it
in and do a "dmesg" and see if the system creates the serial port. If not, then
it will take a kernel hack, and I can't remember the module, to install the
id's.

I think gpsd, possibly with some linux-only driver, might do. Docs indicate
it works with the USb-only/Garmin protocol only GPS18-USB. No idea if it
holds true for other USB-only Garmins.

Not sure if this helps but when I had the EEE I played with Roadnav
and a cheap UT-41 GPS and it worked fine by using gpsd.

gpsd /dev/ttyUSB0
