[XeTeX] problem with ~ in Mapping=velthuis-sanskrit

Using the velthuis tranliteration scheme to type devanagari texts, I
recently came accross some problem with ~n to produce ञ glyph.
In tabular like environment, the ~ returns to its non -break space
status and ~n is rendered as न

[XeTeX] how to suppress doted circle next to a glyph
Bonjour,
I want to use some glyph using the command \symbol. In some case I get a
glyph with a dotted circle, how can I get the glyph without this circle?
For instance, if I type \symbol{"1133E}, I get this as a result after
compilation: ጾwith a dotted circle before.
Is it possible to eliminate the circle? And how?

[XeTeX] trying to enable grantha script with teckit
Bonjour, I tried to use the unicode grantha fonts to typeset sanskrit in grantha characters. I hacked the file velthuis-sanskrit.map and changed the unicode values of each characters then compiled the result. I tried this on a file coded according to the Velthuis scheme for sanskrit and this does not work; looking at the log file I get this line for every letter in the source file: Missing character: There is no a in font Noto Serif Grantha Regular/OT:language =dflt;! etc. What am I missing? I have just made a fresh install of texlive 2019 and encountered a
problem with the diacritical marks of romanized sanskrit.
See this mwe (compile it with and without \setdefaultlanguage{sanskrit}) :

Bonjour,
I want to create a command for special notes in roman in a devanagari text.
So I created this command:

The font size is ok for my notes, but the interlineage is too big if
notes are on two lines. Is there a feature in SizeFeatures description
to adapt the interlineage to the chosen font size?

I would say it is a tikz-bug. \hoffset disturbs it. I found

The TECkit mapping is applied after all macros are expanded, just
before the horizontal list is built. You have to decide in advance

[XeTeX] how does xetex choose fonts?
Bonsoir, I installed the last version of Freefonts on my texlive-2013 in: /opt/texlive/texmf-local/fonts/opentype/public/gnu-freefont/ In order to be sure that xelatex will pick up this version, I changed the permissions of other directories containing other versions of these fonts to 000. So I change the permissions of: /opt/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype/public/gnu-freefont/ /opt/texlive/2013/texmf-dist/fonts/truetype/public/gnu-freefont/ /usr/share/fonts/opentype/freefonts/ /usr/share/fonts/truetype/freefonts/ But if I change back the permisions of these directories to 755, xelatex chooses the old version in them. Is there a process to choose fonts? Something like unix system: 1) user's account 2) local config (/usr/local/... /opt/... 3) installed system? I ope to be clear enough. [XeTeX] babel and sanskrit (again) and related questions

Bonjour,
I just discovered that babel is working well with sanskrit! Only one file
is missing: sanskrit.ldf. I made an (ugly) hack of english.ldf and any
text after \selectlanguage{sanskrit} is correctly hyphenated (both
scripts: roman tranliteration and devanagari).
Questions
1- Will it be possible to have an official sanskrit.ldf, correctly
adapted to sanskrit?
2- As the file hyph-sa.tex which gives the hyphenation patterns can be
used for many scripts: roman, devanagari, bengali, kannada Is it
possible to build only one sankrit.ldf file for all these scripts?
3- Is it possible to include in this file some commands like
\catcode`\~=12 which is necessary to use Velthuis-sanskrit mapping? Of
course this change to the catcode should be active only in Sanskrit
texts! BTW with this change to the catcode of ~, hard space is lost;
is it possible to have another character usable as hard space in
Velthuis Sanskrit texts?
4- Writing a Devanagari text using Velthuis mapping or RomDev mapping
produces a very compact text and a change to the baseline skip should be
necessary (scaled to 1.25 at least...); is this change can be include
somewhere or is there something to change in the font itself?

When the font is loaded, it even obeys switching Language=Sanskrit and Language=Hindi (the latter coresponding to the @modernhindi instruction in devnag). Moreover, GNU FreeFont is most probably the only font with correct spacing of Devanagari punctuation. I would certainly use Polyglossia + GNU FreeSerif in XeLaTeX. I installed texlive-2012 and, I'm trying FreeSerif fonts. As far as I can see, there are no italics for devanagari, am I right? Will it be available some day? I commented the part ;; Sanskrit part ;; JH special Doing this you will loose some characters, but it is easy to re-add them according to the transliteration scheme you wish. If you want to byte-compile it there are 2 errors in the Punctuation part (\-\- ?--) (\-\-\- ?---) You should replace ?-- (en-dash) and ?--- (em-dash) by there unicode characters: use M-x ucs-insert RETURN then type the hex code of en-dash: 2013 (same for em-dash 2014) Hope this help. But it is because I did not think at all that it was possible to change
the shape of the digits when latex is in math mode.
I know how to use latex for many things but I am not aware of all
mechanisms and when I tested your answer, I thought that it was a good
solution to my problem, with some restrictions though: I don't know much
about the 'catcode' but it seemed to me that this way of doing could
affect some other latex commands using digits, and I understood
immediadly what could be the disaster with the example given by Ulrike,
indeed I will need to use tikz in the same article and I think that if
I had chosen your solution, I could have waste a lot of time before
understanding that the problem was coming from your solution.
I think that many people are like me: using latex and finding some
solutions to their problems but without going deeply into the technical
part of it. Mastering the side effects of a solution like yours is not
obvious and you should have given some information about the possible
dangers.
Ulrike's solution is a very interesting one because it gives some
homogeneity to the text when you have to mix text and mathematics in a
paragraph, I mean, when your text is not fully a mathematical text.

I could have used array instead of longtable but, it is not handy to
write normal text within the mathematical mode and I need to mix both...
Ross has pointed the problem of spacing and shape of mathematical symbol
(and some oher ones..): indeed \texttimes is not the same as $\times$
for instance.
I was wondering if there would be some fonts feature like:
[Numbers=OldStyle], one could imagine: [Numbers=MathNumbers]
You have a lot of similar options if you use kpfonts. Unfortunately,
these kpfonts do not work with xelatex and I need xelatex, to have
Sanskrit texts (which I mix in my article) hyphenated... I don't know
how to adapt the gloss-sanskrit.ldf file for a use with babel.

Try: \textbf{Tṛtīyo 'dhyāyaḥ} in your text and the same problme
