With this document set up, you should teach XeTeX that a right quote
should
behave like an (ASCII) apostrophe, with respect to hyphenation. So, add
\addto\extrasfrench{\lccode2019=`\' }
Enrico, this indeed works too! I'm just wondering about the weird quotes needed
here. Seems like \lccode keeps an associative table of symbols,
and 2019 would be the unicode character to be redefined. Are the first
(double quote) and last '\ characters always required when using
the \lccode macro? (so would indicate start of redefinition and \' indicates
en of it?).
Also, the suggestion from Andréa Loyer of adding a \usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
directive to my test document:

I think the problem was lying in the need of an
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}needed by babel to correctly deal with
accentuated words and probably words with elided article.
But well polyglossia in anyway more adapted if you are using xetex.

test document when using Babel.
Thanks both for the advices. I'll keep this information for when I ever
have problems related with hyphenation with Polyglossia! Now I just need
to find an efficient
way to input the required unicode characters « » directly from Emacs.

[XeTeX] Hyphenation rules problem in my french document
Dear fellow Xe(La)TeXers,
I would appreciate any clues on the following problem:
I am writing a french document, using the \usepackage[francais]{babel}
directive in my preamble.
Some lines of text aren't hyphenated automatically, most of the time
because there doesn't seem to be hyphenation rules
in the hyphenation dictionary for words preceded by l' such as in my
test document, l'oscilloscope.
I tried suggesting new rules using the \hyphenation{oscillo-scope} rule,
but it does only affect the word oscilloscope when it is preceded
and followed by a space. I can't seem to find a way to tell it to use
\hyphenation{l'oscilloscope} without it issuing a warning such as:

This is all very excellent. To say that I was scared to make the switch
to polyglossia!
I guess I had not so fond memories of my first clashes with Ubuntu's
outdated TexLive packages.
And the user manual is a mere 15 pages, I'm reading it right now! ;)
Polyglossia seems a superior solution, indeed, there is not even the
need to specify the hyphenation rule,
it splits the l'oscilloscope word just fine with the defaults:

\setdefaultlanguage{french}

Maybe the problem is related to my version of Linux Libertine fonts? I'm
using version 4.4.1-4 from Ubuntu 10.04 repository.
It seems to be the OpenType version, because I need to specify Linux
Libertine O to find the fonts.
So modifying your test document accordingly:

So the problem seems to be coming from fontspec. What does it mean? That it

Hello fellow Xe(La)TeX users,
Would someone happen to know why the following does not work as intended
in a XeLaTeX document?
P\textsubscript{\textepsilon}
Well, it does print Pɛ, but notice the epsilon is not in subscript. This
behaviour affect any unicode character.
