[XFree86] i830 S-Video Out on TP R31

2003-02-23 Thread David A. Mason
Title: Message

Greetings,
listmembers.

I have been making
some attempts at piecing together configuration options from the few scraps of
info I can find on this subject on the web, and I am not having
luck.

Can someone direct
me to a controller-generic or (even better) i830-specific document on utilizing
the S-Video out as a separate screen? Is this even possible in the current state
of 4.3?

That failing, I'll
post the specifics of my config and the config file itself.

TIA,
DAM

There are no XFree86 4.2.x packages for Red Hat Linux 7.2
officially. Upgrade to Red Hat Linux 8.0 or 7.3 which both come
with XFree86 4.2.0. The version in 8.0 contains many stability
fixes also.

[XFree86] bug in ATI driver

2003-02-23 Thread Kris Finkenbinder
At least it seems to be a bug. Take note that I've seen this happening
with recent releases of XFree86 for a few months, at least. I've been
downloading new releases of Knoppix and booting them on this machine for
a few months. Each time I've seen this and just thought it was something
peculiar about the way Knoppix configured XFree86.

What I have here is a Gateway Solo 9300, with a 15.7 inch (that's right,
15.7, that's not a typo), 1280x1024 LCD screen, and an ATI Rage
Mobility-P video card, with 8MB of video memory, I believe.

This card was working great with X 4.2.1 that was installed with
Mandrake 9.0. I never had a problem with it. Since I started upgrading
packages to Cooker versions, it has wigged out on me. I'm unable to take
a screenshot of this effect. Apparently the window manager sees the
screen just fine, it's just what I'm seeing that's gone haywire.

Here's what I'm seeing: About one quarter from the top of the screen
there is a horizontal line, below which everything gets stretched by
about 30 pixels downward. Even the mouse cursor gets stretched when it
crosses that area. Since the screen is being stretched, the actual
bottom of the screen image is pushed off the bottom of the physical
screen, so I can't see any toolbars down there.

Along the right side of the screen, about 90 pixels away from the edge,
there is a vertical swath about 30 pixels wide that is just "screwed up"
like it's being seen through a filter or something. The effect is most
marked around the edges of things, and on fonts.

I'm not including a config file because it is pretty obviously not a
configuration problem. I've tried XFdrake and xf86cfg -text to
autocreate the file, and when that failed I tried all the different
available options, even "LCDsync" which wasn't in the man page but was
suggested on [EMAIL PROTECTED] by Marc la France. Nothing has made any
difference at all, except Option "SWcursor". Without that option, I
can't click on anything without hovering over an invisible point about
200 pixels below the object I'm trying to click on. Also without that
option, the mouse cursor will hit the bottom of that stretched area and
stop dead, like it thinks it's at the top of the screen.

The only way I've been able to get this card to work is by using the
VESA driver, which of course sucks because it's really slow.

If there is any specific debugging command or debugging program I can
download and run to provide more useful information, I will happily do
so. This is really frustrating and I'd really like to see this fix get
into XFree86 before the Mandrake 9.1 final release.

I'm running XFree86 version 4.2.99.902 (4.3.0 RC 2) and all this happens
while using the ati driver.

Thanks,
Kris F.

That's because you're replacing the X server and all of it's
drivers. You are no longer using 4.2.99.902.

I was able to get my VE/7000 working in 4.1.0 by using the DVI-VGA

worked as expected.

XFree86 4.2.0 (and later) allowed me to switch to the VGA port, like one

Have you been able to isolate where the references to /usr/bin/cc are
coming from then if it isn't from $(CC)?

Traditionally cpp hasn't alwasy been in $PATH (e.g., /lib/cpp).
I ran into a problem with a RH 5.2 test build where /lib/cpp exists,
but not /usr/bin/cpp (and linux.cf now refers to the latter).

imakemdep.h hard-codes it for some platforms. For platforms where a
suitable cpp can reasonably be exptected to be available in $PATH,
the full path doesn't have to be specified there. A lot of platforms
use 'cc -E'.

[XFree86] Multihead: Screens flipping each time I start X

2003-02-23 Thread Patrick Garner
I have a GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X video card and 2 monitors: one flatpanel
ProVista Microscan L912 and one Hitachi Superscan CM814. I am using RH 8.0 kernel
version 2.4.18-14. I can get both monitors to display -- but only every other time I
start X! I set up the config file so that the Hitachi monitor would show Screen1 on
the righthand side and the ProVista monitor would show Screen0 on the lefthand side.
But every other time I start X the Hitachi shows the lefthand screen and the Provista
shows the right hand screen and the Hitachi monitor flickers greatly -- as though the
Hitachi has been given the lower refresh rate settings of the flat panel. Exiting X
and restarting, the monitors show their correct screens again. This repeats over and
over each time I start X, with monitors alternating between the screens they display.
Any ideas on what my problem is? I've attached my XF86Config file.

Thanks,
Patrick Garner

I tried setting CC and BOOTSTRAPCFLAGS and neither gets rid of
the problem completely. I also have a problem with /usr/bin/cpp
being hard coded in various places.

I complain about this because I often use different compiler
versions. I would rather just set the PATH to point to the
directiry of the compiler in use for cpp, gcc, etc.

I see in the imake.c and imakemdep.h that /usr/bin/cpp is
being hard-coded into the executables. Also many of the
Makefiles, presumably they are being constructed via imake,
contain this hard-coded path. Maybe someone better informed

Your /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libpcidata.a appears to be corrupt.
It should have the same version as your server, which I assume
is 4.0.3. You should probably upgrade to 4.2 while you're at it.
4.0.3 is pretty old.

[XFree86] ATI Radeon 7500 LW - color problem

Hi,

I need your help.

I have a nice Titanium Powerbook G4 800 Mac OS X and with SuSE Linux
7.1 for PPC.
The notebook has an ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (Radeon Mobility 7500)
(1002:4c57) graphic card.

On Mac OS X the graphic is perfect, but on Linux I get only strange
colors.
I installed xf86 4.2.0 but it didn't help. There is no Radeon LW card
in the list of ATI devices.

So, can anyone help me?
Is this graphic card supported by the 4.3 version of xf86?
Or does the newest SuSE 7.3 version for PPC help?
Any help is welcome.
Thx.

No. Moreover, having done that, and trying to restore original

no no, I used a Michel's package.

In my case, I checked out xfree 4.2.99.902 from CVS, built
it ([uncomment #ifdef HasGcc2 from site.def] && make World && make

dri kernel modules and put them in

go). Maybe this will work for you, too?
i installed dri-trunk from Michel's deb package, built the kernel module
radeon.o from Michel's src package, (recompiled the kernel), and copied
radeon.o to /lib/modules (I hate make install with no clear explanation
what will be happening). i dont see any significant difference to what

Re: [XFree86] Re: [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] problems switching backto X from console

2003-02-23 Thread ahaning
The server says version 4.2.99.2 because he/she installed the DRI trunk.
I've downloaded XFree from CVS, compiled/installed, and it reports
itself as version 4.2.99.902. Then, I download the DRI trunk,
compile/install, and it says:

XFree86 Version 4.2.99.2 (DRI trunk) / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 21 October 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18 i686 [ELF]
Module Loader present
It seems that it's probably more of a labeling problem. We can't really
tell what version of XF86 is installed, since DRI changes the version.

Please update to the current XFree86 CVS release before reporting
bugs against CVS. Lots of development occurs every day in CVS,
and there have been a couple hundred bugs fixed since 4.2.99.2
was tagged.

Daniel Stone has debian packages of much newer CVS XFree86
available. I keep losing the URL or I'd pass it along. He's on
this list though and will likely respond.

Hope this helps,

Boy, you sure proved your cluelessness. Red Hat Linux 8.0
shipped with XFree86 4.2.0, of which XFree86 4.2.0 was released a
good 6 to 9 months before that, and was also included in Red Hat
Linux 7.3.

Red Hat Linux is 100% open source, and KDE is not a fork. There
is no closed source KDE in Red Hat Linux. What was changed in
KDE were the default graphical _theme_, the menu structure, and
default icons, and few other small things. That is *hardly* a
fork. It is a modification, and one which the GPL license that
the code is under allows completely.

Please check your facts before making an arse out of yourself.

You are using a very old version of XFree86 (4.1.0 or older) with
a newer version of the gcc compiler. The new gcc contains an
optiomization (merge-constants) which the XFree86 ELF module
loader can't cope with in that release of XFree86. Newer
releases of XFree86 have a built-in workaround for this.

Recommendation: Upgrade to XFree86 4.2.1, use current CVS, or
wait for 4.3.0 to be released.

Hope this helps.

From what I recall, and I may be a little off here, RedHat made a cock up of
8, using pre release x (and some dodgy, closed source fork of kde), so
problems might be expected.

Your video hardware is not supported in Red Hat Linux 8.0, nor in
any existing released version of XFree86. XFree86 4.3.0 will be
the first release to support the Intel i845 chipset.

The next release of Red Hat Linux will support this chipset.
If you prefer, you can give the current beta release (Pheobe
Beta 3) a test run as it contains the current XFree86 development
code which will become 4.3.0 before long.

You haven't really provided any useful details for someone to be
able to diagnose your problem and perhaps offer help. xdm, gdm,
and kdm all work well in Red Hat Linux 8.0. If you're having a
problem, then your setup is likely different enough that it is
causing something different to happen which isn't working out for
you. Again though, you haven't provided any useful details, so
we're not likely going to be able to help.

Perhaps in your opinion. Many others disagree greatly. I'm one
of them. I use KDE as my primary desktop in Red Hat Linux, and
find it works just fine.

Please tell us what specific standards you are refering to. I'd
really like to know what exact standards you are refering to that
Red Hat Linux does not comply to. Before responding however, you
may wish to view the following:

Oh really. What xdm modifications exactly are these? I'd
definitely be interested in this one. Or are you merely just
assuming that there are modifications?

>If there could be some information regarding this (i.e a work-around or

Again, you haven't mentioned any specific problem or provided any
details, so nobody will be able to help you unfortunately. It
may or may not be useful for you to know that xdm works perfectly
fine for the rest of the Red Hat Linux using population, at least
for people I know using xdm.

It appears that you've installed the DRI trunk. So have I. However,
[ctrl]+[alt]+[f2] and then [alt]+[f7] will bring back X for me. My guess
is that maybe you installed the dri from cvs over your 4.2.1

it ([uncomment #ifdef HasGcc2 from site.def] && make World && make

dri kernel modules and put them in

[XFree86] Slow X startup for NVIDIA binary drivers

2003-02-23 Thread Scott C. Linnenbringer
My problem is that X starts up much slower than normal (for example, with the
nv drivers). It is noticeable and quite annoying, so I asked a friend at
local LUG and he said he had a similar problem which he fixed by upgrading to
the latest drivers and stripping down a lot of the loaded X modules. I am
using the latest drivers, on a Geforce3, and in addition I have removed the
GLcore module. What others should I strip out? Is there any kind of FAQ or
something that I can read for tweaking? Also, is there anything else I should
do? Thank you!

It seems that XFree86 releases are decades apart. I
remembered it once said on the site that XFree86 4.3.0
was to be released in May 2002.
Much later on it was announced it would be presented
in January 2003.
If it's going like this I am looking forward to my
great great grandchildren using XFree86 5.0. We'll all
be dead by the time XFree reaches the 5th version.
Typical open source. Delays, delays and more delays.
Oh and did I mention delays?
Oh, you dont have to use them, do you? You are XFREE to choose.

This means that you must be logging in and running X as root. This is
explicitly something that you are warned against doing. Every version
of Red Hat that I can remember posts a message on the screen telling you
that this is a bad thing to do.

The answer to your question can be found by searching the archives of
this mail group at

The top level Makefile refers to $(CC), and I guess your version of make
defines it to "/usr/bin/cc". An alternative to creating the symlink is
to run 'make CC= World', or find out how to change
make's default (if possible).

You could just add a line in your .xinitrc that calls your web browser.
Mozilla seems to have -height and -width options, but no obvious X
geometry options like Netscape 4 does where -geometry 800x600+0+0 would
make it fullscreen on an 800x600 display (+0+0 meaning "put it in the
upper righthand corner).

You know...you're right. We should all buy close source since their
products are so stable (undoubtedly from the 2 hours they spend 'bug
testing') and completely free (programmers hate money, it's a known
fact).

Sure, but software rendered. The fact that you can't tell the difference
speaks highly in favour of the RENDER extension. :) (I find it amazing
how well it works even in 8 bit)

I doubt it, but who knows. I'm not sure what would cause it to run
normally (since you can zap it) but not display anything. Maybe someone

That's because the radeon driver in DRI CVS simply doesn't support ARGB
cursors in hardware yet. :\

Work is in progress to fix this for 4.3.0 though.

I dont' expect XFree86 to die anytime soon. In fact, I wouldn't expect it to die as
it's being already used in many places. Also, I
don't see the problem here with release dates. This is not commercial software, so no
marketing or other tactics apply. Software
is released when it's ready, and if takes a lot of time to release a new version,
maybe it's due to the fact that people do it cause
they want, without earning money, not to keep stakeholders happy. So if you want to
help, donate money or better yet, help
them with coding so they can release faster.

So, are you waiting for any specific feature? Why do you complain then? If you think
Open Source Software needs to release
software at a fast pace, then you've chosen the wrong side. Go with commercial
parties: they will charge you for software, for
buggy software and they associated marketing campaigns. In OSS, things work a little
different.

Cheers!

[XFree86] Death of the XFree86 project?

2003-02-23 Thread Gaston Krasnik
When will the official death of the XFree86 project be
announced?
It seems that XFree86 releases are decades apart. I
remembered it once said on the site that XFree86 4.3.0
was to be released in May 2002.
Much later on it was announced it would be presented
in January 2003.
If it's going like this I am looking forward to my
great great grandchildren using XFree86 5.0. We'll all
be dead by the time XFree reaches the 5th version.

OK. So they don't give much improvement, if any, at all. Well, at least, that
would avoid a relocated call and gain a few (2-4) asm instructions. That's
not worth the effort _if_ speed and perf are the only issues at hand.

When it helps debugging, it should definitely be repaired. If it once was
possible to compile a driver statically to help with debugging, and that is
really usefull (I mean _really_usefull_), then it should be fixed (if it is
relatively easy to).

I personnaly don't think I would use it, but developpers should keep as much
tools as possible to find bugs.

Well, a bit off my shoes today, I'm just back from a sleepless night, so
please forgive me for having spoken nuts if you think so...

Goin' to bed anyway :-O

Yann.

Possibly

(++) Means that the DPI was set on the command line with something like

The command line overrides the config file and the config file overrides
