So I have from the Display tool selected the card Cirrus Logic GD543x with memory size 2Mb using the cirrus driver. One of the options "noaccel" does the trick of stopping all the checkered display. However, this works fine for 256 Colors, but anything higher and redrawing is _painfully_ slow. It would be nice if this option could be eliminated from the equation so that I could enjoy some nicer graphics... So I can at least get work done now, but my question is: Is this a bug in the cirrus driver? Re: [XFree86] X Fonts
Matt, This was copied from Branden Robinson's xfree86 FAQ (slightly edited to make it less confusing for a non debian user) found here (I noticed that the one on xfree86.org has been taken down, unfortunately, because this question is asked all the time): http://people.debian.org/~branden/xsf/FAQ *) How do I get the X server to find the "fixed" font? If the X server refuses to start, complaining that it cannot find the "fixed" font, then one (or more) of the following is likely true: + You don't have a valid FontPath in your /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. At the very minimum, your FontPath should look something like this: FontPath "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/" You will likely have several more directories listed. The "fixed" font is in the "misc" directory. + The fonts.dir or fonts.alias files in /usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc directory have been corrupted or are not present. This could be caused by a broken package which unpacks one or both of these files onto the system. A reinstallation of xfonts-base should fix the problem. + You're using a font server (either local or remote), and it is not running or not reachable. Note that Debian ships the xfs package with TCP listening turned off by default for security reasons. If you are running xfs locally and do not need to serve fonts to remote machines, you don't need to turn TCP listening back on. Instead, try a FontPath entry like this: FontPath "unix/:7100" If you are using a remote font server, determine whether or not it is running, is listening on the TCP port, and/or engage in some network troubleshooting. [XFree86] S3 driver problem in XFree 4.3.0
Hello, I have a card with a Trio64V2 chip and 4MB RAM. I want to use a 1280x1024x16 resolution. The S3 driver, however, doesn't seem to like that resolution. The log messages are below. I tried this with the VESA driver, and that driver gives me the desired resolution, confirming that the card supports it. Again, logs are below. Question: How can I get the S3 driver to give me the 1280x1024 resolution? There doesn't seem to be a man page that describes the options for the S3 driver. I tried to use the "set_mclk" and set_refclk" options that the S3 Virge driver supports, but these options don't change anything. -Joe XFree86.0.log using S3 driver: (II) s3(0): VESA BIOS detected (II) s3(0): VESA VBE Version 2.0 (II) s3(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 4096 kB (II) s3(0): VESA VBE OEM: S3 Incorporated. 86C775/86C785 (II) s3(0): VESA VBE OEM Software Rev: 1.1 (II) s3(0): VESA VBE OEM Vendor: S3 Incorporated. [XFree86] pixel corruption with s3 virge dx
Hi, I am having pixel corruption problems with an S3 Virge DX, and XFree 4.2.1. Whenever a portion of the screen needs to be redrawn, flickering occurs. In the most extreme cases, it is apparent that the flickering pixels are duplicated from other sections of the screen. Moving the mouse over blank areas of the screen does not generate any pixel corruption. This corruption occurs above 1024x768 at depth 16. No flickering at 24 bits up to 800x600, but after that bands of two or three gray lines move slowly up the screen. It's hard to tell if there is similar corruption occuring underneath that behaviour. To reduce the flickering, I have tried setting NoAccel and SWCusor to true. The only difference that made was to slow redrawing down, while retaining the pixel corruption. The option that seems to have helped is disabling XVideo. This greatly reduces the corruption. I've also tried lowering the first value in the 1280x960 mode line: Modeline "1280x960" 148.50 \ 1280 1344 1504 1728 960 961 964 1011 +hsync +vsync It defaults to 148.5. Lowering it to 110 clears the flickering, but causes the edges of the viewable are to bow out, so I'm guessing that isn't the way to do it. 120 seems to be the best trade off between flickering and screen shape. Clutching at straws, I remember reading somewhere about X and serial port IRQ conflicts. The flickering and an increase in serial port silo overflows seem to coincide. I think that this was at the point I upgraded to 4.2.1 from 4.0 (I think). But I can't find that article again. If anyone could offer advice to clean this screen up I would appreciate it. I've attached my XFree86 config file and a copy of /var/log/XFree86.0.log. Anything else that might help to post, just ask. [XFree86] [Bug 17] New: Xfree86 Server 4.3.0 fails to build on FreeBSD (5.0-current) alpha-architecture [PATCH]
So 4.3.0, as it is distributed, doesn't build on FreeBSD alpha (I run -current, but I think the same problems would exist for -stable). The following patch makes the build work for me - it runs ok with my matrox millenium II card. It does 3 things -- it makes a prototype for a function that doesn't have one (I couldn't find a header file with this, so I just include it here -- seems ugly), it fixes a problem with system include files (needed an extra one) and it fixes some broken #ifdef'd code (the #endif is several lines past where it should be, making the file have systax errors (the function never finds a final closing '}'). I'd be happpy to answer any questions about the code, and I'd be happy to try modified versions of this patch if you end up wanting to change things around a bit. If I switch from DVI-digital to DVI-analog *on the monitor* the picture goes away, so I was getting very confused. This is [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a 108MHz clock, well under the 165MHz limit. There is something else: The *analog* signal (speak: DVI-A) is (partly) transferred on the extra pins, outside of this 8x3 block. There are (up to) four pins in a square, with a ~2mm wide "key" pin in the middle. If these pins around the key pin are missing, this is a digital-only cable. I have pins 123..678 in each row, ie I am missing a 2x3 block in the middle of an 8x3. I take it this is single-link. Think so, too. Might be DVI-A, though - see above. I should probably stop thinking about what my G550 will do on my SGI 1600SW+MLA. 1600x1024 seems to break all the rules. Should be possible using analog signals. [XFree86] keyseq created with ctrl in xterm different since xfree 4.3 ?
Hi there, I just installed a new LFS with XFree86 4.3. I'm having the following problem with xterm: ctrl+ now creates different keysequences on my system. For example: ctrl+ now creates "^[[1;5C". On my other (older) systems it would create "^[[5C". (You can check that by ctrl+v ctrl+right) I changed my /etc/inputrc to reflect the changes, so 'forward-word' works again. But in Vim using ctrl+right now deletes the rest of the text (!), instead of jumping to the next word to the right, as it should. Ok, it's just the first application I had a problem with, but I guess I will find a few more, because I'm still using a lot of console-based programs. Anyone got an idea, how to make ctrl create keysequences as before in older XFree86 versions ? I'm completely lost, when it comes to configuring XKB more than this: Driver "keyboard" Option "Protocol""Standard" Option "XkbLayout" "de" Option "XkbModel""pc105" Option "XkbRules""xfree86" Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys" Sorry, if this has already been reported or solved, but I'm not a member of this mailinglist, thus I'd also like to get cc'ed on any answer or comment, please. Systeminfo: TERM=xterm xterm in /usr/share/terminfo/x/ is a link to xterm-xfree86 (tried using the old xterm-xfree86 file to no avail.) Some of the keys don't behave quite the way they used to: The VT switch sequences, for example, now have an explicit X key symbol, which caught me out for a while: Also, try running xkeycaps or similar and see what it thinks your ALTGR key is set to. No, I don't use my own xmodmap. xkeycaps does not exist. What is similar to xkeycaps? How and where do I define AltGr to be a dead key? On my other G550 I have a 1600x1024 monitor on what appears to be a single-link cable. If I switch from DVI-digital to DVI-analog *on the monitor* the picture goes away, so I was getting very confused. This is [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a 108MHz clock, well under the 165MHz limit. > > The monitor reports it's in 'digitial' in the onscreen displays. > > Plus, I'm using a (single link) DVI/D cable. I have pins 123..678 in each row, ie I am missing a 2x3 block in the middle of an 8x3. I take it this is single-link. My clock is 162MHz, which is just within the single-link limit. Option NoDigitalScreen makes no difference, so maybe the option is not available without mga_hal, and I am in fact using an analog signal. I wouldn't trust the on screen display to report the signal type - it reports "no signal - digital port" or "no signal - analog port" when I switch to an input with no cable connected. > Erm, I don't think this will help. [XFree86] fatal server error: no screens found
Hi, I have a problem that I can not fix. After startx I get the message "fatal server error: no screens found". I think it is the video card, I found a help request of someone else that has the same problem as I have and he has the same video chip (http://forum.mlug.org.au/bbshowpost.php?bbsubject_id=177) My system is a pentium 166 mmx, and my video card is: vendor: sparkle (?) chip set: S3 Trio64V2/DX I use linux: 2.4.18-14 distribution: red hat 8.0, (7.3 gives the same problem) (See attached file: XF86Config.txt)(See attached file: XFree86.0.log) Do you know a work around for this? After serveral evenings I currently has given up trying and now think about bying a different video card. Joost ter Laak XF86Config.txt Description: Binary data XFree86.0.log Description: Binary data

I have to clarify/correct my original post: Single Link is not directly limited as regards resolution, but clock speed. Single link cards/cables have a max clock speed of 165Mhz. All above this needs dual link. 165Mhz should last for up to 1920x1080-60Hz or 1280x1024-85Hz. The monitor reports it's in 'digitial' in the onscreen displays. Plus, I'm using a (single link) DVI/D cable. I can't even force it to analog on that cable via DigitalScreen{,1,2} "False". (Could it still be fooling me and doing analog somehow?) Don't think so. I really like your point about the dual-link card/cable. I may go get a dual-link cable and see if it has an effect on the Iiyama au4831d. (And/or if Dr.Aitchison could report on his cable?) Erm, I don't think this will help. Since Matrox always and everywhere states that the maximum resolution is 1280x1024 the card is very probably a single link card. Hence, a dual link cable will not help you either. Lastly, how can I know if a card is dual/single link? Good question. Card manufacturers generally don't seem to like or use these terms. Typically, they target on Windows users who think in resolutions only. p.s. Re: Veit's question about 60hz vs 56hz: I'm sure. I went and double checked: at 60Hz I get a blank screen for 1600x1200 and see this in the log: Look at the dotclock. If it exceeds 165Mhz, the DVI connection very probably will fail to be stable. -- Thomas Winischhofer Vienna/Austria mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]http://www.winischhofer.net/ ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
[XFree86] [Bug 16] New: XFree doesn't start if tv-output is connected, too.
http://bugs.xfree86.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=16 Summary: XFree doesn't start if tv-output is connected, too. Product: Drivers Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: ATI AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] If there's a cable connected to tv output of my card (Hercules Radeon 8500LE), XFree does not start. Instead, there are following errors in the log file: "No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD" and "(WW) RADEON(0): Valid modes must be between 320x200-0x0". I am not wanting/trying to use the TV-out, just the monitor. But I do want to have the TV-out plugged in so that I can use VESA modes to output to the TV as needed. I have tried various options (CrtScreen, nopanel_display, NoPanelDisplay, crt_screen.. there was some doubt about what was the correct form), and changing the driver name from 'ati' to 'radeon', but none of those help. The problem is both with XFree 4.3.0 drivers and the current ati.2-drivers. The problem has been verified ( http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=1783158&forum_id=5014 ) - the only way to get anything work is to completely disconnect the tv-out. The problem would go away if the drivers would just ignore the presence of the tv-out, as it's not supported anyway, or by providing an option to provide the functionality. --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Help!!!
The Linux 7.3 I installed cannot detect my monitor, I have Philips 15" 105E12 monitor. Here's what happened, when the installation was just two clicks away, the installer told me to indicate the monitor model which is not available among the selection. So I just chosen Generic settings. When I restarted the pc, it just gone straight to command line. Then typed, Xconfigurator, I chose settings and even chose custom and entered the Horizontal and Vertical Sync Ranges, but it didn't work. The Xconfigurator infact probed my video card (NVIDIA Riva TNT/TNT2) and also prompted me if I would choose the monitor setting it has detected, 105E and ranges, but if the Xconfigurator test my settings, it just went blank (black) and the error message says that the configuration I entered are not correct. Please help. See also the XFree86.0.log below. Thank you. [XFree86] binding keyboard key presses to mouse buttons
hiya Im using XFree86 4.3 and i have have an A4TECH Optical GreatEye mouse it has 2 wheels, and i cant get the 2nd wheel to work for x axis scrolling (left and right) i figured it has 8 buttons... 2 buttons on the left the 1st wheel being 3 buttons, the other wheel being 2 buttons and then 2 buttons on the right so i added the following to my XF86Config-4: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device""/dev/psaux" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 8 9" Option "Buttons" "9" Option "SampleRate""200" Option "Resolution""400" Option "Threshold" "0" EndSection i used xev to check what it was doing... and sure enough no matter what i set the 2nd buttons to the Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 8 9" set the keys acordingly, however i cant get it to scroll horizontaly, then i thought about mapping they keyboard arrow keys so it would scroll but i cant work out for the life of me how, i read the man pages for xmodmap etc.. but im just totaly lost and confused about this, so if anyone can help me get this setup so i can scroll left and right, it would be verry much aprreciated. thanks alot Bain ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

When I had RH7.1 (and also after updating this with the latest rpm available for that distribution from rpmfind.net) I had a very similar problem which was fixed by downloading & installing XFree86-SVGA-3.3.6-38.i386.rpm and consequently running "Xconfigurator --kickstart" as root and then rebooting. However, I can't seem to locate a similar package for the RH8.0 distribution. There's no similar package on the CDs, nor does a google search turn up anything. XFree86 (version 4.2.0) seems to be installed from the CD... I've tried various monitor configurations using the "Gnome Menu > System Settings > Display" tool to no avail. What can I do to set this all up properly? Thanks muchly... Here's my details: - The video card (the output from SuperProbe from when I had 7.1 installed)... root > SuperProbe First video: Super-VGA Chipset: Cirrus CL-GD5430/40 (PCI Probed) Memory: 2048 Kbytes (Huge!) [XFree86] [Bug 13] New: Display disturbances when accellerated
http://bugs.xfree86.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=13 Summary: Display disturbances when accellerated Product: Drivers Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: Trident AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm running XFree 4.3.0 (Gentoo compiled) on a BookPC (http://www.lex.com.tw/index1.htm), which has a CyberBlade 1i video chip. When I use the trident driver, no matter what video mode/bit depth I use, I get disturbances when the image changes, for example when I move the mouse. The disturbances look as if the signal to the monitor is distorted, with parts of scan lines being moved to the left or right for a fraction of a second. The best way to test this is on a "raw" X, where the speckled pattern seems to boost the effect. The weird thing is that this doesn't happen when I turn off accelleration, or use the vesa driver (which may be the same thing, although the vesa driver seems to pick better modes). Any ideas? --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: [XFree86] [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] I upgraded today from RedHat Linux v6.1 to RedHat Linux v7.3. It seemed to go smoothly until I entered "startx" at the shell command line. I got a screen full of information, and I'm not sure how much of that information you need to see. The problem machine is not connected to the internet; for that reason, I could not do a 'cut-and-paste' of all the text.
You are using an X3.3.6 formated XF86Config with X 4.x You may have an XF86Config-4 or you should run Xconfigurator Lionel PS why did not you go to RH 8.0 while you were at it? --- Greg Baxter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Regarding: I upgraded today from RedHat Linux v6.1 to RedHat Linux v7.3.
