[XFree86] [Bug 109] New: Italian keyboard needs some changes
[This e-mail has been automatically generated.] Please do not reply to this email. if you want to comment on the bug, go to the URL shown below and enter your comments there. http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=109 Summary: Italian keyboard needs some changes Product: Client Libraries Version: 4.3 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: other AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am an Italian (avid) Linux User, and would like to propose a few changes to the Italian keyboard layout. Until now, I have been using xmodmap to fix the standard it keyboard distributed with Red Hat (which I assume from the comments in the files to be the one produced by XFree, but please tell me if I'm wrong). Now xmodmap has some problems, hence this RFE. There are two problems with the current Italian layout. One is a problem that pertains technical people, the other pertains writers. The first problem is the location of braces. Braces are heavily used in many common programming languages and in TeX. They are positioned on AltGr+7/0, which is very uncomfortable for fast typists. Most programmers are used to US keyboards, and find very useful to get braces using SHIFT+AltGr+"è"/"+" (as AltGr+"è"/"+" produces "["/"]"). It is logical, as it is essentially SHIFT+"["/"]". The current assignment to those combination are dead keys for accents that are not used in Italian (dead circ and macron accents). Probably no Italian user ever knew that they are there. Thus, having braces there should not give backward compatibility problems, and would definitely improve usability for programmers and TeXnicians. The macron is used sometimes in Latin, so it would be useful to have it anyway, but read below. The second problem is the lack of dead keys for accents we *do* use, that is, grave, acute and (albeit it is archaic) circumflex. The Italian keyboard has keys for all lower case accented letters commonly used in our language (e.g., è,à,é,ù,ò,ì). However, we also use accents on upper case letters, which are available in ISO-8859-1 (e.g., È,É,Ì,À,Ò). There is no way to produce these symbols with the present keyboard, as they are not assigned, and we have no dead keys for grave and acute accents. The need for grave and acute accents is also increased by the fact that Italian writers and publishers do not completely agree on the nature of accents for i and u. Some of the most important publishers (say, Einaudi) use *acute accents* on i and u, and again these symbols are not available. I propose a pattern where dead keys for accents are located on keys producing similar symbols. Currently, SHIFT+AltGr+"'" produces a questiondown, which is not used in Italian. I would propose that SHIFT+AltGr+"'" produces a dead grave accent instead. This would allow to introduce grave-accented letters in a rather logical way, and would solve the problem for upper case letters. It is reasonable, as AltGr+"'" is a backtick, which looks like a grave accent. Finding a place for the dead acute accent is harder (had we not the necessity of producing the backtick, I would have proposed AltGr+"'"). The most reasonable key is ",", as it looks like an acute accent. Thus, AltGr+"," should produce a dead acute accent. Currently it is free. It is not over. Archaic (but very fashionable!) Italian writing of certain words ending in "io" (e.g., "polinomio", which means "polynomial") use a *cirmcumflex* accent. That is, "polynomials" is written "polinomî". Again, we have no way of producing this letter (I had to use the Gnome Character Map). Since SHIFT+AltGr+"ì" produces a dead ogonek (again, we do not use it), I would propose that SHIFT+AltGr+"ì" produces a dead circumflex accent instead. Since SHIFT+"ì" is exactly "^", this should be again logical and reasonable. Finally, following the above pattern the dead macron would be much better placed on AltGr+"-" (currently free) and the dead double acute would be much better placed on SHIFT+AltGr+2, as it would be AltGr+'"'. Thank you for your attention. --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

By not testing it, you'll not get any help, and the bug will never get fixed. Test "noaccel" and provide that feedback here. [XFree86] Your buglist for The XFree86 Project's Bugzilla needs attention.
[This e-mail has been automatically generated.] You have one or more bugs assigned to you in the Bugzilla bugsystem (http://bugs.xfree86.org/) that require attention. All of these bugs are in the NEW state, and have not been touched in 7 days or more. You need to take a look at them, and decide on an initial action. Generally, this means one of three things: (1) You decide this bug is really quick to deal with (like, it's INVALID), and so you get rid of it immediately. (2) You decide the bug doesn't belong to you, and you reassign it to someone else. (Hint: if you don't know who to reassign it to, make sure that the Component field seems reasonable, and then use the "Reassign bug to owner of selected component" option.) (3) You decide the bug belongs to you, but you can't solve it this moment. Just use the "Accept bug" command. To get a list of all NEW bugs, you can use this URL (bookmark it if you like!): http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?bug_status=NEW&[EMAIL PROTECTED] Or, you can use the general query page, at http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/query.cgi. [XFree86] [Bug 100] Hang when using scrollbars / moving windows
[This e-mail has been automatically generated.] Please do not reply to this email. if you want to comment on the bug, go to the URL shown below and enter your comments there. http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=100 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-04-05 07:11 --- Linux kernel: 2.4.20 (custom built) Distribution: Red Hat 8.0 The NoAccel option did solve the problem, and I had a read about the various XaaNo.. options, but wasn't sure which one I should use. From what I read on the 'net, some of them seem to be for fixing strange graphic glitches, not hang- ups like the ones I've been getting. Something very very strange though, is that the problem of the lockups while moving the scrollbars and windows disappeared when I set the colour depth up to 24 bit (it *was* at 16 bit.) However, when running apps under WINE (specifically Trillian, which I was surprised to see working!) sometimes if I try moving them, everything freezes up again. I discovered that the CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE key combination does actually solve this problem by kicking me back to the login prompt again. But something even more serious has happened now - and I don't know where I should look for a solution. I've set up my TV card (a BT848 type card) and xawtv quite happily displays a picture, although when maximised, not all of the screen is used. Yesterday, I had the TV in the corner of the screen, and decided to do a bit of housekeeping on my downloaded files. After deleting several files from my /home folder, the entire system froze - including the mouse pointer. I suspect this could be a BT848 driver issue, but it could still be graphics-card related (as it does make heavy use of graphics, obviously, to display the TV images.) --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

ManagerZone RealPlay now enables members to literally watch their team play live league matches in real-time and analyze previous matches through a television-like interface. The game is primarily viewed via a Web browser and operates on supported PDA's and mobile phones. [XFree86] [Bug 43] RFE: Add Keyboard Macro Facility (to X Server)
[This e-mail has been automatically generated.] Please do not reply to this email. if you want to comment on the bug, go to the URL shown below and enter your comments there. http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=43 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-04-05 09:00 --- I think it should be done in the X Server or some similar common location so that it can be used for input to any program, rather than, for example, limiting it to kde compatible programs. Can you provide any hints about why it cannot be done at the X Server level? I've never looked at the code, and probably could not make heads or tails of it in any reasonable amount of time, but I'd expect that there is a (or more than one) mechanism to handle input keystrokes, and pass them on to a client application. My thought would be to put some code where the input keystrokes come in, look for certain special key combinations, and, if found, pass a "string" of input keystrokes to the "current" application. (The keystrokes may have to be sent as keydown, keyup, ... events rather than an ASCII string, but that should not be difficult.) We'd need a storage mechanism in the X Server to remember the special keystrokes and the translated string to be sent. What am I missing? (I know it would not be easy, and especially not for me, but I have trouble understanding where the great difficulties lie. Or, is it more a philosophical thing -- such an approach might not be compatible with the X "philosophy"?? In what respect?) I really hate to see this marked "RESOLVED" (or is the status really "RESOLVE(D) LATER"?? (The two words together represent the status??) I've tried to get the Klipper developer interested in doing something along these lines, and I had expected something before now, but haven't seen anything up through kde 3.0.4 (Mandrake 9.0). --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

So while this may be doable in the server, is that really the best solution? For example, that would limit this functionality to recent XFree86 servers, whereas a client side solution should work with most if not all X servers. Didn't work because it is not supported in XFree86 4.2.x. You could try using the unaccelerated "vesa" driver which uses the card's BIOS, however if it does actually work, it will suck bad performancewise. XFree86 4.3.0 claims support for SiS 650 also, and is included in Red Hat Linux 9, however I can't make any claims as to wether it works or not. Perhaps someone else can vouch for if it works. Alternatively buy a new card that is well supported. Hope this helps. -- Mike A. Harris ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Re: [XFree86] Problem with X server!
I agree that it might be better to just use a later distribution of Red Hat. But if you have limited resources and want to try a few things, there is a tool called xf86config that you run from the command line that will ask you for information to create a new XF86Config file. This is what appears to be your problem. If you don't know what that is, try the manual pages, "man XF86Config". You will need some information from your monitor and video card. You need at least the horizontal and vertical frequencies of the monitor and the type and memory size of your video card. You should have a good idea of what resolution you want. A good guess would be 1024x768 at 24 bit color. You might want to post what kind of card and monitor you have. Re: [XFree86] Radeon 9000 pro crashed
When you say that the card was working correctly in BSD, do you mean just in single display mode? Were you getting functioning multiple displays? It is very odd that MS Windows would influence the card that way. Maybe it changed something in the motherboard's BIOS. When I launch the XF86config the system hangs completely with black screen, and I cannot see the kernel crash message (or something). Below you can find the XFree86.log file. Also, just to play, I removed the pcmcia and sound modules... Anybody know what happen? All the best, and thanks a lot in advance Rodolfo XFree86 Version 4.3.0 Release Date: 27 February 2003 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6 Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18-24.8.0smp i686 [ELF] Build Date: 06 March 2003 Before reporting problems, check http://www.XFree86.Org/ to make sure that you have the latest version. [XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 crashes: no screens found
Ok, I'm totally stumped. I installed XFree86 4.3.0 on linux kernel 2.2.14. I ran 'XFree86 -configure' creating /root/XF86Config.new. I ran 'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new' to test the server and it crashes saying no screens were found. /var/log/XFree86.0.log shows a number of errors including: (WW) xf86AcquireGART: AGPIOC_ACQUIRE failed (Inappropriate ioctl for device) (EE) GARTInit: AGPIOC_INFO failed (Inappropriate ioctl for device) (EE) I810(0): AGP GART support is not available. Make sure your kernel has agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel module is loaded. and: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. and then the fatal error: no screens found. Now this whole business about inappropriate ioctl makes me nervous. Probably because I know very little about the mechanics of ioctl. This *is* the system call that we are talking about, right? Why would it fail? Wrong version maybe? Is the kernel at fault, old version that doesn't support some new ioctl thing-a-ma-bob. A bug in AGP GART? AGP GART is in fact installed as a module. However this is not a fatal error and maybe I can still run X without this AGP GART stuff. Continuing, now the final blow: Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. This makes me the most nervous of all. The screens have no usable configuration? Oh this really disturbs me because I just ran XFree86 -configure so if this leaves all my screens in an *unusable* state then does that mean I'll have to configure my screens myself? If XFree86 can't figure out what configuration is usable how will I ever figure this out. I know just as much about my hardware as X does, i810 and a Voodoo2. Well, the tracks run out of my train of reasoning here. I just don't know enough about how AGP GART, ioctl, and XFree86 work to fill in the gaps. This is my cry for help. Confused in San Carlos, Zach Walters p.s. I have attached the complete /var/log/XFree86.0.log in case anyone is interested. :var:log:XFree86.0.log Description: application/sdp

I would not guarantee XF86Config works on RH, and cannot speak for SuSE. Have you tried X -configure as root? If that locks up, then having a serial or network connection to log the output will help, so we can see the final printouts of the server. I suspect your log file is truncated. Having said all that, ViRGE has had some trouble with the monitor probing. If you have entered Horiz and Vert frequencies into your XF86Config file, then try adding Option "noddc" to the Monitor section and report the result. --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are the assignee for the bug, or are watching the assignee. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: [XFree86] Problem with X server!
That looks like the new Intel integrated graphics? You're probably going to need to install the newest XFree86 (version 4.3) to get that to work. Mark.
