Egbert: Just a suggestion to leave requests like this open so that people
are more likely to find them when querying, and also so that identical
duplicate requests can be closed as duplicates of the first bug...

Another possibility is the "LATER" resolution.

It is great that there is now a bugzilla in place, however it'd have been
a bit nicer if the latest version of bugzilla had been chosen instead. ;o)

Don't mind me ;o)

If I remember correctly, Hui Yu told me in an email that the Radeon
driver does not currently twiddle the backlight registers or somesuch
although I don't recall the specific details.

So this isn't a "bug" per se, but rather it is a lack of a feature. I
think it would be beneficial to get Hui CC'd on this bug report for comment,
although I do not know if he's got a bugzilla account here or not. I will
try to add his address nonetheless.

This is indeed fixed in 4.3.0, however I've backported this to
XFree86 4.2.1 and 4.1.0 also, which I have applied to our Red Hat Linux
XFree86 packages for future erratum. I will attach those patches to
this report in a minute so that others using other distributions can patch
the problem themselves if they like.

Yes, blanking now works (sometimes). But now, apm suspend/resume is
completely broken, the machine locks up hard on a resume. Funnily,
even if I switch to a text console, suspend from there and resume later,
the text console seems fine but if I switch back to the X console, the display
is garbled again. Did not yet test wether disabled acceleration removes that
effect.

Both of these patches have been runtime tested for quite a while now in
released Red Hat products, and are safe to be applied to the XFree86
xf-4_1-branch and xf-4_2-branch of CVS if those branches are still being
maintained with stable fixes.

Feel free to apply them to CVS if you feel they're clean enough.

Personally, I think this is something that should be able to be implemented by
an application instead, such as a window manager, or something like KDE's
'klipper' application.

Is there any reason to do it in the X server that couldn't be done by a
separate client?

Juliusz: Just off the top of your head... how much effort do you think
it would take for someone to backport whatever is needed for this to 4.2.1
and possibly 4.1.0? And if it would be considered a lot of work and/or
not worthy of the time spent, do you have any suggestions for a quick and
ugly hack to avoid it? Some people have suggested imposing limitations on
the maximum size of fonts, but I've purposefully avoided making such a change
as I didn't want to stray from what XFree86 code was doing.

Just curious if there is something we might be able to do for users of older
servers without expending a lot of energy.

TIA

Regardless, it is not possible to write 3D support for a video card without
having the hardware documentation for the chip, and funding for development.

Tracking something like this in bugzilla that isn't going to happen ever without
the above isn't useful. Provide feedback to ATI directly if you like on their
website's feedback page as to what you would like to see happen. That may
or may not help. Just a suggestion.

[XFree86] Problem with X server!

2003-04-05 Thread Gaasha!
Hi!
I have installed Redhat Linux ver 7.1 on my new P4 computer (earlier I had it on my P3 and it was working fine). But when i installed Linux on this P4, it didn't recognize X server during installation. So I had to quit without X installed. When I logged on to the system through console, and ran the command "startx" it gave error and didn't start X server. I am attaching the output log file that it saved in the /var/log/ folder, namely XFree86.0.log.
Please, help me configure the X server, I can't work on linux console alone.Thanking you in anticipation,Gaasha.Do you Yahoo!?

This definitely is not an XFree86 bug, or at least the anaconda traceback
you've shown doesn't contain any information to conclude anything useful.

"anaconda" is the Red Hat Linux installation program. I suggest you file
a bug report in Red Hat bugzilla instead, against the "anaconda" component,
but you should provide much more detailed information as the info below
would be useless on it's own.

[XFree86] [Bug 109] New: Italian keyboard needs some changes

http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=109

Summary: Italian keyboard needs some changes
   Product: Client Libraries
   Version: 4.3
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: P2
 Component: other
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am an Italian (avid) Linux User, and would like to propose a few changes to
the Italian keyboard layout. Until now, I have been using xmodmap to fix the
standard it keyboard distributed with Red Hat (which I assume from the comments
in the files to be the one produced by XFree, but please tell me if I'm wrong).
Now xmodmap has some problems, hence this RFE.

There are two problems with the current Italian layout. One is a problem that
pertains technical people, the other pertains writers.

The first problem is the location of braces. Braces are heavily used in many
common programming languages and in TeX. They are positioned on AltGr+7/0, which
is very uncomfortable for fast typists.

Most programmers are used to US keyboards, and find very useful to get braces
using SHIFT+AltGr+"è"/"+" (as AltGr+"è"/"+" produces "["/"]"). It is logical, as
it is essentially SHIFT+"["/"]".

The current assignment to those combination are dead keys for accents that are
not used in Italian (dead circ and macron accents). Probably no Italian user
ever knew that they are there. Thus, having braces there should not give
backward compatibility problems, and would definitely improve usability for
programmers and TeXnicians. The macron is used sometimes in Latin, so it would
be useful to have it anyway, but read below.

The second problem is the lack of dead keys for accents we *do* use, that is,
grave, acute and (albeit it is archaic) circumflex.

The Italian keyboard has keys for all lower case accented letters commonly used
in our language (e.g., è,à,é,ù,ò,ì). However, we also use accents on upper case
letters, which are available in ISO-8859-1 (e.g., È,É,Ì,À,Ò). There is no way to
produce these symbols with the present keyboard, as they are not assigned, and
we have no dead keys for grave and acute accents.

The need for grave and acute accents is also increased by the fact that Italian
writers and publishers do not completely agree on the nature of accents for i
and u. Some of the most important publishers (say, Einaudi) use *acute accents*
on i and u, and again these symbols are not available.

I propose a pattern where dead keys for accents are located on keys producing
similar symbols.

Currently, SHIFT+AltGr+"'" produces a questiondown, which is not used in
Italian. I would propose that SHIFT+AltGr+"'" produces a dead grave accent
instead. This would allow to introduce grave-accented letters in a rather
logical way, and would solve the problem for upper case letters. It is
reasonable, as AltGr+"'" is a backtick, which looks like a grave accent.

Finding a place for the dead acute accent is harder (had we not the necessity of
producing the backtick, I would have proposed AltGr+"'"). The most reasonable
key is ",", as it looks like an acute accent. Thus, AltGr+"," should produce a
dead acute accent. Currently it is free.

It is not over. Archaic (but very fashionable!) Italian writing of certain words
ending in "io" (e.g., "polinomio", which means "polynomial") use a *cirmcumflex*
accent. That is, "polynomials" is written "polinomî". Again, we have no way of
producing this letter (I had to use the Gnome Character Map). Since
SHIFT+AltGr+"ì" produces a dead ogonek (again, we do not use it), I would
propose that SHIFT+AltGr+"ì" produces a dead circumflex accent instead. Since
SHIFT+"ì" is exactly "^", this should be again logical and reasonable.

Finally, following the above pattern the dead macron would be much better placed
on AltGr+"-" (currently free) and the dead double acute would be much better
placed on SHIFT+AltGr+2, as it would be AltGr+'"'.

Thank you for your attention.

When adding log files, and any other large content to bug reports, please
use the file attachment feature and do not cut and paste them. It is hard
to read bug reports and follow people's comments with a huge 10 foot long
file pasted in the middle. ;o)

I have seen this "(EE) RADEON(1): Idle timed out, resetting engine..." on
a PCI Radeon VE on an AMD Clawhammer in 64bit mode also.

This might be a bug in the vidmode extension, or it could be a bug in the
application simply choosing the first mode rather than looking through
what refresh rates are available.

You may want to discuss this issue on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list
and get a more widespread concensus first before it can truely be considered
a bug in XFree86 though.

I get tonnes of these bug reports. If someone would actually send me one of
these ancient cards, I might port the code from 3.3.6 sometime in my spare
time.

If anyone reading this has such a card, and wants to send it to me, mention
it here and contact me via email to arrange card transfer. I am in Ontario,
Canada (despite my UK mail address).

The oops happens because when mga_do_init_dma() fails to find the framebuffer it
calls mga_do_cleanup_dma() which tries to free a bunch of stuff which never was
allocated. I know this because I've come across this once.

Nevertheless the real problem is that the framebuffer can't be found on the
first place. Please post your XFree86.0.log and give details about which
versions you're using, specifically the linux kernel version, XFree86 version,
and where did the DRM module you're using came from (kernel or XFree86).

What OS and distribution are you using?

>I've read similar reports of this, and one solution suggested is to disable the
>hardware acceleration (noaccel), but I don't want to do that.

Do you prefer lockups instead? The entire purpose of people telling you those
suggestions is for you to determine wether or not it solves the problem and
report back your results so that a developer can then investigate the
acceleration problem (if there is one). By not testing it, you'll not get
any help, and the bug will never get fixed.

Test "noaccel" and provide that feedback here. If it does solve the problem,
look for the "XaaNo" options in the XF86Config manpage and try them one at
a time to see if any one of them solves the problem. Report that information
back here also.

When filing bug reports, use bugzilla's file attachment feature instead
of pasting huge files in the bug report comments directly. It makes it
very difficult to follow the discussion of comments in a bug report when
there is a 10 foot long file in the middle.

everything (both fullscreen and windowed). All DRI releases up to 2003.04.04.
Isn't caused by agpgart (ForcePCIMode doesn't fix it). It sometimes crashes too
when left alone (no 3D client).

[XFree86] Your buglist for The XFree86 Project's Bugzilla needs attention.

2003-04-05 Thread anderson
[This e-mail has been automatically generated.]

You have one or more bugs assigned to you in the Bugzilla
bugsystem (http://bugs.xfree86.org/) that require
attention.

All of these bugs are in the NEW state, and have not been touched
in 7 days or more. You need to take a look at them, and
decide on an initial action.

Generally, this means one of three things:

(1) You decide this bug is really quick to deal with (like, it's INVALID),
and so you get rid of it immediately.
(2) You decide the bug doesn't belong to you, and you reassign it to someone
else. (Hint: if you don't know who to reassign it to, make sure that
the Component field seems reasonable, and then use the "Reassign bug to
owner of selected component" option.)
(3) You decide the bug belongs to you, but you can't solve it this moment.
Just use the "Accept bug" command.

To get a list of all NEW bugs, you can use this URL (bookmark it if you like!):

http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/buglist.cgi?bug_status=NEW&[EMAIL
PROTECTED]

Or, you can use the general query page, at
http://bugs.xfree86.org//cgi-bin/bugzilla/query.cgi.

Appended below are the individual URLs to get to all of your NEW bugs that
haven't been touched for a week or more.

You will get this message once a day until you've dealt with these bugs!

An additional comment: everything started with a bug report to Red Hat
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=88080) for the
misbehaviour of xmodmap. They suggest it is a problem with the many changes in
XFree 4.3, so probably you should have a look there.

There is no such thing as "Linux 8". There are numerous
different Linux distributions each of which has their own
completely separate version numbering schemes.

Also, your uuencoded file attachment is less than useful. Your
best bet is to post your log file and config file on the web or
ftp somewhere and include URLs to them.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-04-05 07:11 ---
Linux kernel: 2.4.20 (custom built)
Distribution: Red Hat 8.0

The NoAccel option did solve the problem, and I had a read about the various
XaaNo.. options, but wasn't sure which one I should use. From what I read on
the 'net, some of them seem to be for fixing strange graphic glitches, not hang-
ups like the ones I've been getting.

Something very very strange though, is that the problem of the lockups while
moving the scrollbars and windows disappeared when I set the colour depth up to
24 bit (it *was* at 16 bit.)

However, when running apps under WINE (specifically Trillian, which I was
surprised to see working!) sometimes if I try moving them, everything freezes
up again. I discovered that the CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE key combination does
actually solve this problem by kicking me back to the login prompt again.

But something even more serious has happened now - and I don't know where I
should look for a solution. I've set up my TV card (a BT848 type card) and
xawtv quite happily displays a picture, although when maximised, not all of the
screen is used. Yesterday, I had the TV in the corner of the screen, and
decided to do a bit of housekeeping on my downloaded files.

After deleting several files from my /home folder, the entire system froze -
including the mouse pointer. I suspect this could be a BT848 driver issue, but
it could still be graphics-card related (as it does make heavy use of graphics,
obviously, to display the TV images.)

NOW MANAGERZONE'S ONLINE PLAYERS SEE FULL-MOTION GAME PLAY
ManagerZone - Unveils Premier Live Games www.managerzone.com

April 5, 2003, Karlskrona, Sweden - ManagerZone.com, a company that
provides interactive sports manager games to online soccer/football
aficionados, recently unveiled RealPlay, a set of leading graphical game
services offered to their online community of over 100,000 soccer/football
enthusiast.

ManagerZone RealPlay now enables members to literally watch their team play
live league matches in real-time and analyze previous matches through a
television-like interface. The illustration graphically moves players up
and down the field, so members will see how the opposing team responds to
their tactics. "ManagerZone's RealPlay technology is revolutionary to the
online game market. A first step was taken today to make manager games on
the web as advanced as PC and console based games. The product has been in
development for over one year and we are very excited to finally make it
available to our members. Now our members can visually see their tactics in
action against other teams," said Rick Banning, Director of Business
Development. The game is primarily viewed via a Web browser and operates on
supported PDA's and mobile phones.

"The Analyzer" tool, an element of Real Play's package service, is a
simulator that provides members with a real-time tool to analyze player
skills such as short passes, cross balls, running, and shooting. By
enabling them to view matches in slow motion, pause, and fast-forward,
members can visually observe how their players performed during each match
play and adjust their tactics and training schedules accordingly for
improvements.

"ManagerZone provides a fun way for players, coaches, and soccer fanatics
to gain a better understanding of the game, interact amongst other
community players, improve game skills, and promote healthy competition
through team challenges, leagues, and tournament cups," said Banning.

Also released this month, ManagerZone's value packages offer all-inclusive
game services to their members. Package one, ManagerZone RealPlay is priced
at $3 per month (30 SEK, £2, E 3). This package which includes "Live Games"
and "The Analyzer" tool. Package two, the Gold Package, includes RealPlay
and offers members premium services at a fixed price of $4.95 per month (45
SEK, £3 , E 4.95). The most comprehensive package, the Elite Package,
provides ManagerZone fanatics the best play-to-win tools and game services
for $8.95 per month (85 SEK, £6, E8.95).

As ManagerZone continues to expand its member base across 17 countries and
surpass 100,000 members, the company records a monthly average of 12,000
new members,1.2 million unique site visits, and 150 million page views.
"Since the introduction of English version and expansion to many other
countries, ManagerZone is poised to grow its member base to over 250,000
subscribers internationally by the end of 2003," said Banning.

ManagerZone also has expansion plans this month including additional
languages and country availability. Languages including Spanish, German,
Danish, and Polish will be added to the existing Swedish and English
versions. Country expansions include Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Brazil,
Chile, and Mexico amongst several others, which will be available by the
end of April.

[XFree86] [Bug 43] RFE: Add Keyboard Macro Facility (to X Server)

I think it should be done in the X Server or some similar common location so
that it can be used for input to any program, rather than, for example, limiting
it to kde compatible programs.

Can you provide any hints about why it cannot be done at the X Server level?
I've never looked at the code, and probably could not make heads or tails of it
in any reasonable amount of time, but I'd expect that there is a (or more than
one) mechanism to handle input keystrokes, and pass them on to a client
application. My thought would be to put some code where the input keystrokes
come in, look for certain special key combinations, and, if found, pass a
"string" of input keystrokes to the "current" application. (The keystrokes may
have to be sent as keydown, keyup, ... events rather than an ASCII string, but
that should not be difficult.) We'd need a storage mechanism in the X Server to
remember the special keystrokes and the translated string to be sent.

What am I missing? (I know it would not be easy, and especially not for me, but
I have trouble understanding where the great difficulties lie. Or, is it more a
philosophical thing -- such an approach might not be compatible with the X
"philosophy"?? In what respect?)

I really hate to see this marked "RESOLVED" (or is the status really "RESOLVE(D)
LATER"?? (The two words together represent the status??)

I've tried to get the Klipper developer interested in doing something along
these lines, and I had expected something before now, but haven't seen anything
up through kde 3.0.4 (Mandrake 9.0).

It is kind of a philosophical question I guess - only what _has_ to be done in
the server should be done there (or what can be done _much_ more elegantly
there; similar to kernel vs. userland).

So while this may be doable in the server, is that really the best solution? For
example, that would limit this functionality to recent XFree86 servers, whereas
a client side solution should work with most if not all X servers.

A client side solution needn't be specific to certain desktop environments
either, nor do the generated events have to be synthetic when the xtest
extension is available.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> has implemented this in
radeonfb in his Linux kernel tree with support from ATI. I don't know if it's
feasible to add to the X driver though.

Didn't work because it is not supported in XFree86 4.2.x.

You could try using the unaccelerated "vesa" driver which uses
the card's BIOS, however if it does actually work, it will suck
bad performancewise.

XFree86 4.3.0 claims support for SiS 650 also, and is included in
Red Hat Linux 9, however I can't make any claims as to wether it
works or not. Perhaps someone else can vouch for if it works.

Alternatively buy a new card that is well supported.

Hope this helps.

RH 7.1 is a bit old for new hardware, I suspect your graphic card is not recognised I
would try RH
8.0 (or 9 I believe it is already out) or some other newer version of another
provider. A lot of
the newer cards are only recognised well by X 4.3...

Red Hat Linux 7.1 is quite ancient.

Your video hardware is Intel i845 integrated video, which is not
supported by anything except XFree86 4.3.0. Red Hat Linux 9,
which is just released supports the Intel i845 however no other
prior releases support this video chipset.

Recommendation: Install Red Hat Linux 9

Re: [XFree86] Problem with X server!

2003-04-05 Thread Paul
I agree that it might be better to just use a later distribution of Red
Hat. But if you have limited resources and want to try a few things,
there is a tool called xf86config that you run from the command line
that will ask you for information to create a new XF86Config file. This
is what appears to be your problem. If you don't know what that is, try
the manual pages, "man XF86Config". You will need some information from
your monitor and video card. You need at least the horizontal and
vertical frequencies of the monitor and the type and memory size of your
video card. You should have a good idea of what resolution you want. A
good guess would be 1024x768 at 24 bit color.

You might want to post what kind of card and monitor you have.

Re: [XFree86] Radeon 9000 pro crashed

2003-04-05 Thread Paul
When you say that the card was working correctly in BSD, do you mean
just in single display mode? Were you getting functioning multiple
displays?

It is very odd that MS Windows would influence the card that way. Maybe
it changed something in the motherboard's BIOS.

Yes, It is.

I have just single display ViewSonic 15GA, connected to RADEON, and
color TV Sony KV-M2530K, connected to S-Video output.
The Card was working correctly in FreeBSD while TV-Output was switched
off. Now XFree always not started at any videocard mode after TV-Output was
switched ON in Win2000. All Motherboard's BIOS settings are the same.
BIOS default values loading does not give any effect. PCI-reset does not
 give any effect.

Only in Win2000 with ATI drivers.

All OS'es (Win2000 & FreeBSD) boot with videocard in clone mode now - maybe
it is main reason of X-server starting failure ?

this is a known problem with the radeon tv out and dual boot to windows. i
overcome it by not installing windows, but others unplug their tv whilst
booting the pc in linux, or using the 'atitvout' program from
http://www.stud.uni-hamburg.de/users/lennart/projects/atitvout/

Note that if you have booted into a 'broken' state, I believe you need to
reboot without the cable plugged into the tv once to fix it at all.

[XFree86] Problems w/ ATI Radeon Mobility & XFree86 4.3

2003-04-05 Thread Peter Losher
I recently purchased a Inspiron 5100 to replace my trusty (if long in the
tooth) 3800. I am trying to get XFree86 4.3 to work; 'XFree86 -configure'
detects the on-board AGP chip as a ATI Radeon Mobility M7 LW (AGP) but
barfs initializing. A snippet is below, the full log is attached.
-=-
(II) RADEON(0): initializing int10
(==) RADEON(0): Write-combining range (0xa,0x2) was already clear
(==) RADEON(0): Write-combining range (0xc,0x4)
(WW) RADEON(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum
(II) RADEON(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000
(==) RADEON(0): Write-combining range (0x0,0x1000) was already clear
Symbol XAAPatternROP_PM from module
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nsc_drv.o is unresolved!
-=-

Any ideas?

Best Wishes - Peter

   Summary: Problems with S3Virge card
   Product: XFree86 Server
   Version: 4.3
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: blocker
  Priority: P1
 Component: other
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I was trying to install XFree 4.3 on a Sager Notebook with S3Virge MX+ video card,
the processor is an AMD K6-2 333 MHz, with 128Mb RAM, with linux RH 8.0 or Suse
8.0 (the same happen with both). When I launch the XF86config the system hangs
completely with black screen, and I cannot see the kernel crash message (or
something). Below you can find the XFree86.log file. Also, just to play, I removed
the pcmcia and sound modules...
Anybody know what happen?
All the best, and thanks a lot in advance

Rodolfo

[XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 crashes: no screens found

2003-04-05 Thread Zach Walters
Ok, I'm totally stumped. I installed XFree86 4.3.0 on linux kernel
2.2.14. I ran 'XFree86 -configure' creating /root/XF86Config.new. I ran
'XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new' to test the server and it
crashes saying no screens were found. /var/log/XFree86.0.log shows a
number of errors including:

(WW) xf86AcquireGART: AGPIOC_ACQUIRE failed (Inappropriate ioctl for
device)
(EE) GARTInit: AGPIOC_INFO failed (Inappropriate ioctl for device)
(EE) I810(0): AGP GART support is not available. Make sure your kernel
has
agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel module is loaded.

and:

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

and then the fatal error: no screens found.

Now this whole business about inappropriate ioctl makes me nervous.
Probably because I know very little about the mechanics of ioctl. This
*is* the system call that we are talking about, right? Why would it
fail? Wrong version maybe? Is the kernel at fault, old version that
doesn't support some new ioctl thing-a-ma-bob. A bug in AGP GART? AGP
GART is in fact installed as a module. However this is not a fatal error
and maybe I can still run X without this AGP GART stuff.

Continuing, now the final blow: Screen(s) found, but none have a usable
configuration. This makes me the most nervous of all. The screens have
no usable configuration? Oh this really disturbs me because I just ran
XFree86 -configure so if this leaves all my screens in an *unusable*
state then does that mean I'll have to configure my screens myself? If
XFree86 can't figure out what configuration is usable how will I ever
figure this out. I know just as much about my hardware as X does, i810
and a Voodoo2.

Well, the tracks run out of my train of reasoning here. I just don't
know enough about how AGP GART, ioctl, and XFree86 work to fill in the
gaps. This is my cry for help.

Confused in San Carlos,
Zach Walters

p.s. I have attached the complete /var/log/XFree86.0.log in case anyone
is interested.

Both SuSE and RH have their own configuration tools. I would not guarantee
XF86Config works on RH, and cannot speak for SuSE. Have you tried X -configure
as root?

If that locks up, then having a serial or network connection to log the output
will help, so we can see the final printouts of the server. I suspect your log
file is truncated.

Having said all that, ViRGE has had some trouble with the monitor probing. If
you have entered Horiz and Vert frequencies into your XF86Config file, then try
adding Option "noddc" to the Monitor section and report the result.

Re: [XFree86] Problem with X server!

2003-04-05 Thread Mark Vojkovich
That looks like the new Intel integrated graphics? You're
probably going to need to install the newest XFree86 (version 4.3)
to get that to work.
