Re: [XFree86] Keyboard not working with latest CVS

2003-06-30 Thread Thomas Fiebig
Hola,

I solved the problem with the advice of Ivan Pascal (many thanks for that). The
problem was that the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB was absent - why ever!
I've installed X from the FreeBSD ports. But, being the lucky one, another
machine running FreeBSD and X which was upgraded from 4.2 to 4.3 of X posses
this file and I just made a copy of it and put it to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11.

And, taataataa, X works as expected.

Hope, that helps you, too!

Thomas

Howdy,

now... Hopefully things will catch up with me,
preferably sooner than later...
I have read the discussion regarding this problem and
am experiencing the same problem. My keyboard with x11
up is 99%+ non functional. I get the same messages in
the startx.log file about "expected keysym, got
XF86_Switch_VT_1: line 8 of xfree86" as in the earlier
emails. This is the out of the box xfree86-4.3.0 (just
downloaded). I have build logs of both make World and
install as well as the /var/adm/XFree86.0.log if
anyone is willing to look at them and/or help me. At
this point in time my gui is completely non functiona.
Any/all help/tips/hints/suggestions/prayers would be
greatly appreciated.
Regards and thanks for your help and time,

George...

Some of the information in my first message was inaccurate. The graphics
chipset is actually an IGP 320M. Sorry for the confusion. Also, my
XF86Config and XFree86.0.log files are here:

Re: [XFree86] nvidia dual head adapter missing from xf86PciInfo.h

2003-06-30 Thread Mark Vojkovich
To use this card you either need XFree86 4.3 or you need to
use NVIDIA's binary Linux drivers (which will work with your current
XFree86 version).

[XFree86] X not exiting to correct parameters

2003-06-30 Thread Emma Jane Hogbin
Hi

I'm not really sure how to pin this problem down. When I first boot my
laptop (Acer TM 634) I have no problems in the non-GUI mode. I have no
problems using startx to get into a GUI. But when I exit out of fluxbox
and return to a non-GUI environment my screen flickers and is a muted
shade of grey instead of black and white.

I am currently running:
XFree86 Version 4.2.1.1 (Debian 4.2.1-8 20030609132746 [EMAIL PROTECTED]) /
X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 18 October 2002

My desktop manager is fluxbox.

Debian OS with a custom 2.4.20 kernel (including patches for ACPI)
My video card uses the nvidia drivers (I use the debian
packages--currently 1.0.4349)

My Config file is at:
http://xtrinsic.com/geek/config/XF86Config-4.txt

The processes running before, during and after using X.
http://xtrinsic.com/geek/config/processes_beforex
http://xtrinsic.com/geek/config/processes_x
http://xtrinsic.com/geek/config/processes_afterx

And finally my log file for X:
http://xtrinsic.com/geek/config/XFree86.log.txt

Any thoughts on why I can't use the non-GUI mode after using GUI would be
appreciated!!

thanks!

emma

[XFree86] ATI All-In-Wonder 128 locks up system under X

2003-06-30 Thread Nathan Oliphant
Problem: Screen displays message "Frequency over range", then goes into
sleep mode. System is locked up at this point, with no way to reset
other than to power down. Using the vesa driver driver rather than the
r128 driver works, but does not offer the full range of capabilities
theoretically supported by the r128 driver.

Intel i845 is completely unsupported in Red Hat Linux 7.0, 7.1,
7.2, 7.3, 8.0. It is supported in Red Hat Linux 9 however, and
i845 owners are recommended to upgrade to this release.

[XFree86] ATI IGP 340M - Dual head on a lapltop

2003-06-30 Thread Brandon Wittenburg
Hello,

I've an hp ze4430 laptop. It contains an ATI Radeon Mobility U1 (IGP
340M w/ 64MB shared memory). I am currently using the "radeon" driver
that I believe was shipped with XFree 4.3. This graphics card has the
ability to "extend" the desktop to 2048x78 using an external monitor. I
have been unable to find any documentation about such a feature being
supported (or not) by the radeon driver. I have attempted to obtain such
a result by trying everything I know to do in my XF86Config file. I can
get a 2048x768 desktop using the Xinerama option, but the extra desktop
space does not display on the external monitor, rather in empty space
next to the laptop's flat panel. I've also been successful cloning the
display on both monitors using different methods (MonitorLayout and
CloneDisplay). Does anyone know if the current radeon driver supports
this feature or of any documentation that may contain information that
will help me achieve this setup?

Regards,

Brandon Wittenburg

If you think it's a gamma problem, try using xgamma to adjust. I'm sure you
can also set the gamma in /etc/X11/XF86Config, but since I don't do it myself
I don't have any reference, and I'm too lazy at the moment to look it up in

If you type xgamma with no parameters, it will report the current settings.

RE: [XFree86] radeon r300 chips

2003-06-30 Thread News/Info
There are drivers for the r300 chip

I use the Radeon 9700 and found 4.3.X drivers at:

http://www.schneider-digital.de

works ok it seems.

Only problem I have with 4.3.X on RH9 is the Esound server 'esd'.

I can log in and X comes up nicely, I can play sounds using the OSS driver,
but if I log out and try to log in again X hangs. Have to do a complete
reboot every time I log out.

There's a bug report on rh bugzilla about this, but nothing seems to be
happening with it.

Specifically the problem seems to be related to the Via Technologies VT8233
AC97 Audio Controller and ESound.

You have an Nvidia card. Did you load Nvidia's 3D drivers? If not, you
won't get any accelerated 3D. glxinfo is working perfectly.

Make a file called blank.xbm containing the following:

---//---
#define blank_width 1
#define blank_height 1
#define blank_x_hot 0
#define blank_y_hot 0
static unsigned char blank_bits[] = {
0x00};
---//---

Then do "xsetroot -cursor blank.xbm blank.xbm" . Now your root pointer will
be blank.

This probably won't completely solve your problem, though, since it's possible
for other mouse pointers will be used if a window at the pointer location
requests them.

Give it a try anyway. It might be good enough, since you say this will be an
arcade machine.

[XFree86] [SOLVED] How can one disable the mouse cursor?

2003-06-30 Thread Dennis Herbrich
Gnah, never mind, just after I wrote the last mail, I found the solution
to my problem by sheer accident while skimming the "xsetroot" manpage.

To remove the pesky mouse cursor, I started the "bitmap" tool, and saved
the empty image right away as "transparent.cursor" after setting the
hotspot. Now, to use this, I only needed to put "xsetroot -cursor
transparent.cursor transparent.cursor" into my .xinitrc, and the cursor
is nowhere to be seen. Yay.

I *knew* it had to be in the docs somewhere!

BTW, SDL seems to crash and take X with it when it's fullscreened and
the used mouse driver is "void". Using a real mouse driver and
"AllowMouseOpenFail" while simply not attaching a mouse works just fine,
though. No idea where this problem lies, probably in SDL, so I'll
contact them instead about this.

Greets,
  Dennis

The code does

   AvailFBArea.y2 = (pVia->FBFreeEnd) / pVia->Bpl;

Here's the section that provoked the bug:

[XFree86] Can't type in xemacs, emacs, mozilla after upgrade to 4.3.99.7!

2003-06-30 Thread William Gallafent
Hi,

I've been running 4.3.99.4 on top of SuSE 8.2 for a while
with no problems, on an r250If, with xinerama for dual head.
Now I've installed 4.3.99.7 over the top of 4.3.99.4 (which
itself was installed over the top of the original SuSE
4.3.0), and things have gone wrong ... I can't now use
xemacs or emacs, or mozilla!

When I run emacs, it starts up, but as soon as I press a key
it aborts with "Fatal error (6).Aborted". xemacs doesn't
abort; it just ignores all my keypresses. In both cases, I
can use menus with the mouse etc, and paste text in, no
problem. Mozilla also won't let me type anything ... but KDE
apps (Konsole, Konqueror) work fine.

Has anyone else seen this?

Log and config attached (using Xinerama at the moment
because KDE can understand it and place windows properly,
and the dpi is set right!)

I did build 4.3.99.7 from 4.3.99.6 plus the 6-7 patch plus
the mergedfb patch, so I'm currently downloading the full .7
tarball to see if the problem goes away with that, and it
was just a weird patching problem. After that I'll try .6,
etc., until things start working again!

[XFree86] How can one disable the mouse cursor?

2003-06-30 Thread Dennis Herbrich
G'morning list members!

I'm currently in the process of preparing a kiosk-style arcade machine
emulator with a frontend running under X, using only the keyboard.
Everything's just dandy, eliminated the mouse with the "void" driver and
AllowMouseOpenFail, but the mouse cursor is still displayed, and I
couldn't find a way to disable this thing or use a transparent texture
for it or whatever.

Does anyone have a clue or hint on how to get rid of the cursor? Is
there maybe an option I overlooked that can place the cursor out of
viewport borders, or at least into a corner? If at all possible, I'd
prefer a solution without patching X.

Thanks,
  Dennis Herbrich

Re: [XFree86] change the background color

2003-06-30 Thread Mark Vojkovich
Many modern window managers don't use the Root window. They
put their own virtual root on top of it and the only way to change
the color of it is in the Window manager's config files, so things
like xsetroot will not work.

Mark.

i've edited both /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc but
without success.
  kamilla# cat /r*/.xini*
  setroot -solid white
  startkde
i've also changed my /opt/kde/bin/ksplash withx

but just (and only) at X startup (startx) xsetroot seems
do not work.

Re: [XFree86] SGI Dial box support

2003-06-30 Thread Jens Thomas Kaiser
hi,

there are some hacks around, but afaik it is not a general support. the
drivers have to be tailored to the prog. using the dials. both links concern
crystallographic programs:

http://o-info.imsb.au.dk/pipermail/o-info/2002-May/005954.html
ftp://stef.ijs.si/dist/dialbox.tar.gz
 and dialog_manual.ps.gz

hope that helps

[XFree86] Problems starting X

2003-06-30 Thread antons
Title: Message

Hi
there!

My name is Anton.
I'm new to Linux - I heard so much for this OS that I decide to try
it. The installation passed successfully and I thought that everything is fine
until the reboot... The first time I had received error starting X Window... I
tried one more time and then everything seems to be OK - I was able to start in
graphical mode (I did it few times as a matter of fact)... And then, till now -
two weeks now - I was not able to start Red Hat 9 in graphical mode. I asked
some friends for help but no one was able to help me. I red some FAQs,
forums etc. but without success. I have to say that every other things
which I try worked. During the installation the anaconda found my video card and
my monitor and what it types was write for them (so I did not changed the
parameters set for them from installation program). I have to say also that the
mouse is moving. I attach the log and config files...
It seems that
something is wrong - but I can not understand what exactly!!! I have received
error that the X server was not configured properly - but I did everything
wright and as the installation advised me!

Please help
me!!!
Sincerely yours -
Anton Slavov

[XFree86] Gamma problems

2003-06-30 Thread Alex Sandro Queiroz e Silva
Hallo,

I have an ATI Radeon 7000 AGP 64MB DDR and a Samsung SyncMaster 3Ne
monitor (pretty old, I know). I was using version 4.3.0 but the radeon
driver wasn't able to find a suitable mode for my monitor, it was
"thinking" my monitor was a flat panel. After a lot of searching I've
downloaded XFree86 from CVS (cvs co servonly) and compiled it. The
driver now correctly identifies my monitor but the problem now is that
the gamma is all messed up, I can barely read. 3D acceleration is ok,
though.
Any ideas on how to solve this gamma problem? I've tried some values in
the monitor section but to no avail.

-Alex

...
It means the keyboard module doesn't recognize those keysyms (XF86_*).
All of them should be defined in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XKeysymDB file.
Thus this file was not upgraded at the XFree installation or is absent.

If you can't find this file in your sources (or those keysyms are absent there)
you can get the latest version of the file from
http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/lib/X11/XKeysymDB
