Re: [XFree86] Switching Modes now Virtual Screen
I believe X creates a virtual screen when you don't list your highest resolutions first. Just make sure your resolutions are going from highest to lowest, and delete all those up until your preferred one is first in the list. My preferred resolution is first in the list, and there is no virtual screen if I am in that resolution. My problem comes when I'm switch to a lower resolution (800x600 instead of 1024x768). X then creates a Virtual screen. How can I prevent X from doing that? Jrgns -- <>< [EMAIL PROTECTED] 083 511 7932 "For those who believe no evidence is necessary. [XFree86] Alternative keyboard layouts
Hi all, I am writing to you regarding a subject I already had already brought up a few months ago. Here is a link to an archive of the message (on another list where it was reposted) - http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-redhat-list/2003-April/msg3.html In addition to the described behaviour I also want to mention that typing the letter "l" anywhere on the GDM login screen brings up the "Languages Selection" menu. This makes it impossible for any users whose username or password contains the said letter in them to login to the machine. I have just discovered that the problem described is not related to the bug mentioned in the message but is rather a pure xfree86 problem. It persists on a slackware 9 system as well as RedHat 9. As you can see the combination of XKB layouts in question is "de,bg" with "nodeadkeys, phonetic" variants. Actually the changing the variants or omitting them alltogether has no effect on the described behaviour. The layout "bg,de" in any variants displays same bahaviour. This is the layout that presents the problem. Neither"de,us" nor "us,bg" or "de,ru" or in fact anything else I tried in any variants exhibit the described behaviour. Is anyone able to replicate this on their machine? Do you have any ideas how this could be fixed? Many thanks in advance!! Hi, All, I installed RedHat9 on a HP laptop Omnibook 5500CT, which has C&T 65548.XFree86 4.3 is installed. I looked around and copied some modeline cfg, but the best result I get is a very low-resolution, I figure it was about 480x320(it may be 640x480, but it definitely doesn't look that way), each character was about only 6pixel x 6pixel, and I could hardly make them out. I wonder if anyone could help me with a working sample config or tell me what's wrong, this thing has puzzled me for a whole weekend already ! Thanks anyway. reset only attempts to clear your terminal and set it to a "sane" state. It doesn't actually fiddle with your graphics card. reset is good for fixing problems like having echo disabled, the wrong character set, vertical scrolling disabled, and so on---just "logical" terminal mis-settings. SVGATextMode, on the other hand, will reset your graphics card as well. Gvie that a try. I'm not sure what all platforms SVGATextMode works on, though. -- Andy Goth | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://ioioio.net/ End communication. ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: [XFree86] Odd problem with terminals
I think the vesa driver is limited to the modes that are in the bios. Sounds like that mode is not in there, but I don't know much about the vesa driver. As for the "nv" driver not restoring the console correctly, perhaps CVS works better. I don't have access to one of those laptops at the moment so I can't check it out. Mark. Re: [XFree86] Odd problem with terminals
Hey Mark, As you suggested, I switched to using the "vesa" driver rather than the "nv" driver (simply by changing the Device-->Driver entry). The results: I no longer have that problem where the last line of my terminals runs off the end of the screen. The terminals look great. However, X won't start. I've attached the config and log files, in case you're willing to take a look. I didn't quite understand why I got the error I got: (II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1440x900" (no mode of this name) because in my config file I do seem to have a Monitor-->ModeLine defined with that name. Thanks for any ideas you have. I had a similar problem getting dual-head going with a GF2/MX and an S3 Trio 64V+, and it was because acceleration wouldn't work on both video cards at the same time. RE: [XFree86] Problem Installing Mandrake 9.1 with a Diamond Stealth II S200 Video card
It is XFree86 v. 4.3, all the rpm's end in i586. Mandrake 9.1 requires at least a Pentuim to run and I am using their install CD's so I assume that it should be good to go. I installed an older Trident video card and X was able to configure, load and run correctly. Have found that the Diamond Stealth II S220 uses the Rendition chipset, so the software recognizing the card as a Rendition is okay. I don't think I'll fight this one anymore. A weekend on an obsolete video card is enough. Going to re-install the Trident and move on. Although I learned a little about the rpm process and got familiar with bash so it really was a great benefit to me. Been over twenty years since I worked on unix. Very refreshing as I have recently become ABM. Thank you for taking a look at my problem. Re: [XFree86] Dual display problems...
Umm... thanks for your reply. In my XF86Config.new2 file isnt my device driver for the nVidia card set to nvidia? So wouldnt that mean that i am trying to use nvidias drivers and not the generic "nv" driver? I would agree with you but when i change my settings from nvidia to nv and also comment out the Load GLX i still get the same result... maybe ill try changing the s3 from s3virge to just s3 and see if that works... Re: [XFree86] Dual display problems...
Your modules are mixed up. You are trying to use the "nv" driver that comes with XFree86 but you're trying to use the "glx" module that comes with NVIDIA's binary drivers. If you want to use the "nv" driver you need to uninstall NVIDIA's binary drivers (or at least remove NVIDIA's /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so and /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nvidia_drv.o). It should work with the "nv" driver that comes with XFree86 4.3. Alternatively, NVIDIA has binary Linux drivers that should work with XFree86 versions back to 4.0.1. Mark. There is the cursor in the first monitor (screen0 i believe) and I can move it between the two monitors just like i can in WinXP. However this is where it stops. My mouse and keyboard both work and I have to press ctrl-alt-backspace to get back into a command line. I will also include a log file which the only error that i can see is a failure to load GLX error. If anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. [XFree86] S3 Trio64V2/GX 2nd Post, 1st got hijacked...
Hello, I do not believe this is a bug necessarily, I am just trying to clarify something with regard to getting XFree 4.3.0 running on an S3 Trio64V2/GX. On the list of supported hardware for 4.3.0, it states: "The s3virge driver in XFree86 4.3.0 supports the S3 ViRGE, ViRGE DX, GX, GX2, MX, MX+, and VX chipsets." Does this include the chipset I have? Or does it *only* apply to a "Virge" chipset? I am concerned that the"V2" part means it is some more obscure chipset that is not supported, since I seem to only be able to get XFree 3.3.6 to run, although in the XFdrake config util, the V2/GX *is* listed. I am running Mandrake 9.1 on an old Compaq Deskpro with the S3 onboard. I have tried XFdrake, testing at everywhere from 800x600x8bpp up to 1024x768x24bpp (wishful thinking?), and I have tried the listed drivers for: Trio64 (generic) Trio64V2/GX (generic) Virge/GX (generic) Now, sadly, I cannot seem to get it to test OK even when I choose XF 3.3.6 :( Any help appreciated, if it's RTFM, please give me a hint where to look. I have tried Google but have found nothing specific to my situation. Thank you for a great piece of work, this is the first problem I have ever had on any system with XFree, so I am more suspicious of Compaq and S3 than XFree in this matter, that is fer sure. [XFree86] Problem Installing Mandrake 9.1 with a Diamond Stealth II S200 Video card
Dear Sir or Madam: I am a newbee working on learning Linux. Purchased the 9.1 release of Mandrake from Ebay. Loaded the Mandrake MNF on this machine and it worked correctly. Also have run Smoothwall on the same machine and it worked correctly as well. The machine is: Pentium II 450 MHZ 196 Meg of Ram 15 Gig IBM Deskstar IDE hard drive master on Bus A 56x CDROMslave on Bus A Diamond Stealth II S220 video card NEC XV15+ monitor Realtek 10/100 Enet card The install went smooth until the configuration for the graphics card. No matter how I twiddled with the parameters I kept on getting the "Caught Signal 4." error message. Also, the software seemed to want to configure the video card as a Rendition video card. So I just continued with the installation. When I log on I use the bash shell. The machine is up and running but get the following dump XFree86.0.log every time I attempt to start XFree86. I have looked at what rpm's are loaded and have found that almost none of the XFree packages have been loaded. I have manually loaded glibc-devel-2.3.1-10mdk.i586.rmpand fontconfig-2.1-9mdk.i586.rpm After this I attempt to load XFree86-devel-4.3-5mdk.i586.rpm and I get told that XFree86-devel is looking for fontconfig-2.1-4mdk.i586.rpm (which isn't on the CD). Am I not doing something correctly? I would appreciate any help you can send my way. Thanks in advance. Regards, Jim XFree86_0_log Description: Binary data

The resolution of the display is 1600x1024, and XFree86 runs just fine in rootless mode, but it just crashes if I run it full screen. If I set the display resolution in MacOS to 1024x768 it WILL work in full screen mode but not in other resolutions. I'd post an XFree86.log, but it doesnt create one, and I can't seem to force it to (xdarwin doesnt take a -logfile argument). Has anyone else seen this? Any pointers or help are greatly apreciated. I'm running XFree86 4.3.0 on MacOS 10.2.6 the error messages and MacOSX crash log are attached below. When I run it full screen via startx it crashes and I get: = crashing startx messages 2003-07-13 11:25:34.444 XDarwin[1504] CFLog (0): CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. 2003-07-13 11:25:34.445 XDarwin[1504] CFLog (0): CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): The file name for this data might be (or it might not): file://localhost/usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Pacific 2003-07-13 11:25:37.531 XDarwin[1504] XDarwin 1.2.0 XFree86 Version 4.3.0 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 27 February 2003 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your hardware is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. At this point I have no idea what to do. That the problem persisted over a *reinstall* suggests strongly that it's hardware (unless it started as a glitched Config file and *became* a misconfigured one after the reinstall, which isn't completely beyond the pale...) It's possible, I suppose, that you got lucky with a glitch on the hardware from the turn-off -- especially if the powersupply was more than usually loaded because things were running when you shut it off. You don't mention whether you see any problems under Windows... Is there any chance at all you saved a Config and a log from before the reformat for comparison purposes? Cheers, -- jra -- Jay R. [XFree86] Odd problem with terminals
Hi guys, I just installed Mandrake 9.1 on a new Toshiba P25 laptop (1440x900 screen resolution). With some generous help, I got the regular X server behaving perfectly: My real and virtual desktops are both 1440x900, and it looks great. However, when I hit ctrl+alt+F1, to go to the console (is that the right word for it?), I have a little problem... The last half of the last line of text on the console runs off the bottom of the display. Can anyone point me in the right direction regarding how to fix this? Is this even an X-related issue? [XFree86] S3 Trio64V2/GX
I have tried XFdrake, testing at everywhere from 800x600x8bpp up to 1024x768x24bpp (wishful thinking?), and I have tried the listed drivers for: Trio64 (generic) Trio64V2/GX (generic) Virge/GX (generic) Now, sadly, I cannot seem to get it to test OK even when I choose XF 3.3.6 now :( Any help appreciated, if it's RTFM, please give me a hint where to look. I have tried Google but have found nothing specific to my situation. Thank you for a great piece of work, this is the first problem I have ever had on any system with XFree, so I am more suspicious of Compaq and S3 than XFree in this matter, that is fer sure. Re: [XFree86] Switching Modes now Virtual Screen
Hi... I figured out what I wanted... X automatically creates a virtual screen when you use a resolution smaller than the maximum one available. So, if your modes are: "1024x768" "800x600" and you use the 800x600 resolution, X will give you a virtual screen, even if you have disabled it. Now, is there a way that I can disable the virtual screen even if I'm not using the maximum resolution? Thnx...
