Re: [XFree86] Mandrake 10 Install

2004-03-14 Thread Lionel Lecoq
I don't known whether this is still the case: there used to be a logic in the madness:
X 4.x would
first look for a config file in a file given in the command line if not found then (I
believe, not
sure anymore) in the home directory, then in /etc/X11 for XF86Config-4, if this did
not exist for
XF86Config.
If you already have an XF86Config-4 and make your changes in XF86Config then you are
out of
luck...

[XFree86] can't open X from a terminal.

2004-03-14 Thread Gopal Peddinti
Hello there,

I am able to run the X from the Linux machine itself (I am using Redhat
Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 2.1) but not from the remote machines. I
am using a software called "X-manager" from the remote machine. I can work
with the Linux server from the remote machine in text mode. Also I am able
to run X applications like for example "xclock" from the remote machine.
But I can't run "startx". The error message when I tried to run "startx"
command  is below:

-
Fatal Server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errorno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errorno 3): Server error.

Eagerly waiting for your kind suggestions.

Best Regards,
Gopal.

[XFree86] X server on minimum kernel linux

2004-03-14 Thread Omicron Luzi82
Hi,

I have built a debian server and recompiled it to have a minimum kernel,
no mouse, no cdrom, no video, etc.
And now I want to build a X server run on it so I can use X feature through SSH.
Is it possible?
thx

To get back into gnome, create a file in your home directory called .xinitrc (with a
decimal point in front.) Put the following single line in it:

exec gnome-session

To get a usable screen, you need to configure the proper driver. I've sent you a
working XF86Config-4 for that.

Abort command?!? You're confused. Signal 11 is a segfault. In the

1) Yes, there were (note tense) related problems in 4.3 that have since

2) This isn't a support line. I don't have time to deal with issues that

  That's the Sis framebuffer.  There's 32 Meg already write-combined.

   It tries to write-combine 64 meg, but somebody already set it
up as 32 Meg (BIOS? framebuffer device?). Looks like somebody
is confused about the actual size of the framebuffer.

Re: [XFree86] Mandrake 10 Install

  Specifically it said:

(==) ServerLayout "layout1"
(**) |-->Screen "screen1" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor "monitor1"
(**) |   |-->Device "device1"
(EE) No core pointer device specified
(EE) Unable to determine the screen layout
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

   There's no pointer InputDevice specified. A good one
looks below, with Input Devices.

(**) |-->Screen "Screen0" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor "Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 100e"
(**) |   |-->Device "NVIDIA AGP"
(**) |-->Input Device "Mouse0"
(**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard0"

  Where the layout in the XF86Config looks something like:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "AGP Head"
Screen  0  "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice"Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice"Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

  With corresponding Section "InputDevice"s for the Mouse0 and
Keyboard0. Either the InputDevices are missing from the "SeverLayout"
or the their corresponding Section "InputDevices" for those devices
are missing. This is a configuration problem.

The reason for your problem is that, for some reason, MTRR setup fails,
although it obviously is supported by your kernel. At the moment I
cannot think of a reason for this.

Does this warning message go away if you change the amount of video RAM
to, say, 32MB in the BIOS setup?

Hi,

I'm sending files requested to give proper help. Like I said it seems like
Xv is not working (I get lower cpu if I set -vo x11 in mplayer). I suspect
that software scaling is going on, but don't know what to do to correct this

I'll appreciate any help, since this is the only major problem left...

I have:

uname -a -> Linux pundit 2.4.21-144-default #1 Fri Nov 14 00:01:36 UTC 2003

cat /proc/mtrr >

reg04: base=0xe140 (3604MB), size=   4MB: write-combining, count=1

I'm attaching xfree log as suggested. I'm using Suse 9.0 pro and xfree is
something like 4.3.0-29 version (stock provided with Suse, but did upgrade
and downgrade again cause of same problems - but know it doesn't work also
in stock version of xfree...)

Thanks in advance for any help,

I'm on thin ice here, as I have no experience with your setup, but my guess is
that since you didn't set up the TV, nor told X that it should use different
settings for the two display outputs, it autodetects (through DDC) the
ranges, and takes the lowest one (the one for your TV). Disconnect the TV to
see if your problems disappear. If so: properly set up the two displays, or
else you may be damaging your TV when you have it display an out of range
signal.

I think I have at least figured out that I am launching into the fvwm2
window manager.

I have attempted to add the "gnome-session" line to the xinitrc file but
it still starts the fvwm interface. I must be missing something.

   I'm no expert on modern S3 cards, but I think you want to be using
an XFree86 version that's a few years newer than the one you are trying
to use, and I think you want to be using the "savage" driver rather
than the "vga" driver.

Well yes I have a TV attached also. But I was just trying to get the Monitor
working first before I tried the TV.

I thought I told it to use the View Port for the monitor.

Hmmm, with a 10 year old monitor I don't know if I'd be willing to chance the
trial and error method of increasing your range. You might damage it if you
force it beyond spec.

> I dno;t know why XFree86Config says it is using VESA drivers ... i

This should help a bit:
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/firegl/readme0325.txt
although RH might have a better installation guide for you somewhere. If you
don't need 3D you might also consider using the radeon drivers. Just replace
the vesa driver with radeon in your Device Section. Mine for instance reads:

Section "Device"
  BoardName"RV250 If"
  BusID"1:0:0"
  Driver   "radeon"
  Identifier   "Device[0]"
  Screen   0
  VendorName   "ATI"
  Option   "AGPMode" "4"
  Option   "AGPFastWrite" "True"
EndSection

and I use a radeon AIW 9000 card. Considering this line in your logfile:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon R200 QL [Radeon 8500 LE]
you may have to change the BoardName to R200 QL, and perhaps not use the
options I do (depending on your card).

Hope this helps.

Re: [XFree86] Problems After Upgrade to 4.4

2004-03-14 Thread Nick Prat
Newbie myself, I'm not sure I can help. But I can share! I also went to 4.4.0
quite fast because of res./color problems with my Intel chipset (laptop). Tne
install went well but I kept on getting error messages of various natures
(fontpath, etc...). So, my experience is
1- When you get to that screen type exit at the prompt and it'l tell you what
caused the server to crash
2- 4.4.0, as I understand changes directories from 1 location to another and
rewrites links but and it seems that a bunch of those get forgotten in the
process.
3- On Mandrake 9.2 (mine) the config file is XF86Config-4 and 4.4.0 seems to
be creating a XF86Config, which seems to bring some confusion to the loading
process.
4- I noticed that I was getting better results by running 'xf86config' after
the install.
5- Eventually, I reverted to the older version, 'cause I don't have the
experience to correct/rewrite all that needs to be done to have 4.4.0 work on
my Mdrk 9.2.

Btw, is vesa really the driver you want to be using for your Radeon 8500? You
wrote you installed the driver from ATI, but wouldn't you use the ati driver
then? You could also opt for the radeon driver from XFree86, but vesa really
doesn't sound like the driver for you. That might also be what's causing the
"smearing" problem. I don't know what the vesa driver can display at 24 bits

Hmm, with a maximum of 50 MHz for the Horizontal Sync, you're likely to get a
Vertical Sync of about 60 Hz at 1024x768, which is really low in my opinion.
Is 50 MHz really the maximum your 20" monitor can do?

Btw, where are your modelines defined, or are you just using the default ones?
Could you send the logfile so we can see what causes the 'smearing' you

[XFree86] Problems After Upgrade to 4.4

2004-03-14 Thread Richard Tree

I jumped into the upgrade with both feet without taking the
time to really understand what I was doing and now can’t seem to get to
my Gnome desktop.  I am new to Linux and haven’t quite got the
startup process figured out.  My problem is I now boot into a light green
low resolution screen with what looks to be a rectangular menu bar and a
terminal screen.  So I now wonder what I did (I accepted the default
install prompts) and how I can get back to my normal desktop.

I have an AMD64 machine with an ATI RADEON 9600 graphics
card (the reason I upgraded to 4.4).

Anyone know how to get back to my Gnome desktop on startup?

Thanks,

Richard

What I read from this is:
It doesn't recognise your S3 chipset, so it uses a generic VGA driver. It then
concludes that the default depth of 24 bits colours cannot be supported, and
it shuts down.

I noticed you use a reasonably old version of XFree86. Would it be wise to

I've Googled around for you a bit this time, and found two possible answers to
your problem:
1. You have a tv or 2nd monitor hooked up.
2. Your DDC module is ruining things. Set DDCMode to "False" in your Device

Hope this helps.
