Re: [I18n] urdu keymap

2004-09-01 Thread Ali Hussnain Shah
hi,
yes i also fully agree with Sergey. What definition Markus gave us
about keymaps is of old times. And these definition may change to
facilitate the goals without changing the concepts.

There may never exist a hardware keyboard for Urdu, because mostly
english hardware version is used there as also in other countries. So
responsibles are active in research for standards (crulp.org is the
authority i mentioned earlier), and a common user will not wait how long
it will take that a company produces one. There are many linux projects
related with Urdu waiting for such standards.

Regarding the progress of internationalization there should not be any
requirement for real photographs. You cant make many countries dependant
on companies to accomplish their normal day tasks and limit their use of
computers.

regards
hussnain

Hi
I would disagree with you, Mark. There can countries/languages/layouts
which were never implemented in hardware - and still it makes sense to
have corresponding layouts (or at least variants). I would not bound the
word keymap to the politics of the keyboard vendors (some countries
can just be too small/insiginficant for them, some languages considered
as secondary etc). For example, I never seen any keyboard with the Irish
layout - but still think this layout can exist, even if there was no
physical keyboard. Similar, I am not sure there was some keyboard with
the Russian phonetic layout - but AFAIK, the number of people using it
is large enough to include it.

convenience additions privately using xmodmap. Maintaining a repository
of personal convenience keymaps sounds like a very openended endeavor.
I think it really is. The only thing is that maintainers should be
careful and picky about inclusion of the multiple related keymaps.

Sergey
PS I am using both words layout and keymap because I see you want to
ban any non-hardware-based set of symbols.

Re: [I18n] urdu keymap

2004-08-31 Thread Ali Hussnain Shah
hi Zaeem

this keymap was developed much earlier than the crulp one which seems to
be a copy of some of our earlier efforts. Anyway, this is an effort of
LinuxPakistan. Screenshots will be available as soon as the keymap is
accepted.
how have they got your version, you published it already?
problem is, that crulp.org is the official authority for Urdu standards
beeing connected with government. if your keyboard is now accepted, you
and users may get problems if they claim their authority later.

i think isnt it better to discuss it also with other developers at the
forum [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?? we may also suggest some new
improvements there to finalize it.

I belive my version of Xfree86 might be outdated, but I don't know

Re: [Xpert]s3virge PPC

2002-08-15 Thread Zeeshan Ali

Hi,
I am no expert at all but my bad experience with
many old vga cards good experience with s3virge PCI
cards tell me that you can atleast supress that:

Cannot read V_BIOS (5)

line you need to set the option saying something like
scan user flash area enabled in your bios setup.
Again i am no expert, so I may be completelly
wrong Bye.

--- Meelis Roos [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
(no answer from newbie list, asking from xpert now)

I have a powermac 7300 with s3virge pci card (Formac
 GA6). The card has
F-code ROM so OpenFirmware recognizes and
 initializes it. I boot to
Linux (through macos), Linux sees it as a unknown
 1024x768 openfirmware
framebuffer and it works OK in console. Linux 2.2.20
 and 2.4.19 tested.

Now I try to run X on it (latest 4.2.99 CVS - tried
 4.1 also, no
difference). The screen comes up garbled - it has
 vertical stripes,
mouse cursor is a big square with random pattern,
 usually the lower 1/3
of screen is just garbage where even mouse cursor is
 not shown (but it
flickers when moving mouse or scrolling text). When
 drawing windows
(xterm for example), some pixels are missing or
 garbled and scrolling
distorts all the image. Sometimes (maybe always)
 also the color palette
is wrong. Some letters are also flipped
 left-to-right in addition to
 being garbled.

 24-bit, 16-bit and 15-bit depth ar all the same;
 8-bit depth does have
correct colors an no garbage in the lower third of
 the screen but mouse
cursor and fonts are still garbled.

Using software cursor cures the cursor image but
 this is just one
 detail.

Has anybody run s3virge on powerpc successfully? Any
 hints to get it
running? I'm open to trying patches, patch ideas
 etc.
