If you mean the XFree86 included with Debian "stable", then you should upgrade
your XFree86 .deb.

As Mark suggested the XFree86 included with Debian "stable" is too old to
include support for your card.

There are some unofficial Debain apt repositories such as backports.org that
include newer XFree86 .deb files for Debain stable.

The X Font Server (xfs) is not running. Either restart xfs or edit your
XF86Config (in /etc/X11) to use the font directory paths directly (my preference
for occassional use of X on a Internet facing server like a mail server).

If you cannot determine why the X Font Server is dying, then I suggest that you
stop using it, and use the traditional FontPath entries in the Files section of
your configuration file (/etc/X11/XF86Config-4).

e.g.

Section "Files"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi"

I just assumed that when talking fps and games, that it is a 3D game that uses
OpenGL, sorry.

You are correct, the lack of direct rendering is the likely cause of the slow
down. Is there any later messages about it being disabled, also check
/var/log/messages for issues with AGP GART and the radeon DRI kernel module. I
assume that lsmod shows radeon and agpgart are both loaded.

Have you looked at the (WW) and (EE) lines in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file?

The most common problems I have seen with the nVidia binary drivers is failure

do not have filesystem problems (e.g. by running fsck , and ensuring necessary
free space, 'df'), then you should reinstall (rpm -e then rpm -ivh or rpm -Uvh

Red Hat Inc. no longer supports (by producing updates) for Red Hat Linux 8, so I
strongly recommend you upgrade to a supported distribution, first to ensure
security flaws get fixed and second so that you have a newer version of XFree86
(4.4.0 is the current release, which includes better support for Intel 845
series chipset).

You have a Matrox video card, so you cannot use the nVidia binary driver's
OpenGL module (libglx.so). You need to remove nVidia's GLX module from your config.

You also have some minor issues with your FontPaths, but they are not causing
the crash.

If I understand your request, yes. You just need to simplify your Section
"Screen" entry in your XF86Config file.

Something like (you may need/want multiple display depths):

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor"Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1400x1050" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Which version of XFree86 are you running? Debian 3.0 'woody' (stable) was
running a rather dated version the last time I checked, and you may need to use
a newer version of XFree86.

One means of installing a newer version of XFree86 on Debian is using
.

I don't know about the FireGL T2 128MB off-hand, so I don't know which chipset
it is based upon, and if it is a newer chipset it may not be supported or fully
supported yet. A 'lspci -v' could be helpful.

Okay, I wanted to confirm that you were not wasting time with what was actual a
hardware problem. Thanks.

Does X by itself work? No window manager or anything. It won't be usable, but
can help determine whether the problem is with the XFree86 server or other
aspects like your window manager or various dot files.
e.g. just run 'X'

Does running 'XFree86 -configure' work?

Do you have a previous or older kernel you could run? I am not blaming that, I
just want to isolate whether the problem is related to your kernel version or
not. Are you using the XFree86/linux kernel DRI or the DRI and AGP GART module
that comes with the ATI binary driver install?

The nVidia binary driver ('nvidia' not XFree86 open-source 'nv') is not provided
by or supported by XFree86. Bugs should be reported to nVidia, but I strongly
suspect that there is no errors in the software (in this case), but I will guess
that the nvidia kernel modules have not been installed correctly, you can check
with the 'lsmod' command to verify that the nvidia kernel module is loaded.

Excerpt from your XFree86.0.log file:

Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!

Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'

This indicates the problem is that it cannot connect to your X Font Server
(xfs). Restart your xfs (/sbin/service xfs restart) and should be fine. This
service should start with runlevel 5 (Red Hat Linux's default run level for
graphic login). You can check that with 'chkconfig --list xfs', and make any
necessary changes with 'ntsysv'.

Your first message had a configuration file showing you using 'nvidia' driver.

You cannot freely mix and match with the 'nv' and 'nvidia' drivers (they use
different GLX extensions for example).

While it shouldn't fix the entire problem, you should delete the second load of
the GLX extension.

I believe the splash screen is fixed size, so it ignores your configuration
file. I am not sure.

After reading Mark's response I realised that I had misread the errors, the C
library warnings have nothing to do with your XFree86 or the GLX extension, and
the pty (pseudo-terminal devices) errors are the serious problem.

If you have a ~/.initrc file you may wish to delete it or rename it to xinitrc.

Your best solution is to upgrade to a current Linux distribution. Slackware is
currently 9.1 (as of September 2003).

The current release of XFree86 is 4.3.0, it is included in Slackware Linux 9.1
as far as I know.

If you still have problems, please send the entire error log
(/var/log/XFree86.0.log).

I believe that the LE is just slower / less RAM. Should be fine.

The 9200 works fine in 2D, it does not have accelerated 3D (Mesa OpenGL / DRI)
AFAIK.

You may have better results going to a nvidia support forum for help with their
binary driver.

Does it work the open source XFree86 'nv' driver? (You will need to disable the
nvidia 'glx' extension). If do not need fast OpenGL (i.e. don't play games) this
should work well enough for you.

Your first problem appears to be that the version of XFree86 included with
winlinux2003 is too old to know about your nVidia video card. You should be
using XFree86 4.3.0 or possibly try a (quite stable) 4.4.0 pre-release.

Next it appears these files are not available in your install. While you don't
actually need these extensions, it indicates that you likely have other problems
with your system. You may be able to reinstall the XFree86 packages (rpm, .deb,
whatever) that included them.

There are some 3rd-party hacks to allowing multiple input devices of the same

mentioned in the xfree86 or develxfree86.org mailling list archives

(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 3 September 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: OpenBSD 3.3 i386

Upgrade to OpenBSD 3.4 (which I believe includes XFree86 4.3.0) may be useful to
you.

The (4.2.1) system does not recongise your Intel video chipset. Some newer 845G*
chipsets may not be supported in 4.3.0, but should be supported (and numerous
bug fixed) in the upcoming 4.4.0 release, of which RC3 is available.

The configuration file and log file show that you are using the XFree86 open
source 'nv' driver, rather than the nVidia binary 'nvidia' driver.

If you are having problems with the 'nvidia' driver, send the log output from
trying to run it. With your current configuration the 'nv' driver will not work
correctly with the nVidia's binary driver GLX module for OpenGL support. Also
ensure you have installed the nVidia binary kernel module as per their instruction.

Fedora does not use -nolisten tcp as default, but does optionally (and
encourages) installing iptables firewall, and the usual configuration of
iptables would block X11 traffic.

OpenSSH that ships with Fedora does allow X11 forwarding.

It cannot file the config file, which is usually located at /etc/X11/XF86Config
in Red Hat Linux 9.

To have it generate a configuration file use: 'XFree86 -configure'

If you are using a Linux distribution, use a kernel from the distribution, not
your own. If you are using *BSD use a GENERIC kernel config.

If you are building a Linux kernel, ensure that CONFIG_UNIX is set to 'y' (or

Strongly consider upgrading, like it suggests.

A copy of XFree86.0.log would be useful to see your errors, but I suspect that
your Modes line in the Screen section should be "1280x1024" "1024x768".

The Matrox G450 is supported in current release, XFree86 4.3.0 (and possibly
earlier).

I believe Mandrake Linux 7.0 is quite old and you may find the MandrakeSoft does
not support it any longer.

X11 uses 6000/tcp for X11 over a TCP/IP network, AFAIK it does not use UDP.
I believe that local X server / X client connection can be implementation
specific but I believe Unix sockets and shared memory are used in various
implementations. I believe XFree86 uses shared memory for local connections.

XFree86 -configure
scanpci -v
lspci -v

'XFree86 -configure' and 'XFree86 -xf86config .../XF86Config.new'
where ... is the path to where the new config file is placed.

I suggest that consider not using the nVidia binary drivers, and just use
XFree86 open source driver ('nv'). Otherwise install the nVidia kernel modules
as per the instructions with the binary drivers.
