The pid files for RH are usually in /var/run

If not you can do:

   find / -name "xfs.pid"

include the quotes due to the .

that should show you where it is.

Subject: [XFree86] Font server problem ...

Hello:

This is apparently a Red Hat xfs configuration problem.

Red Hat 8.0 standalone PC ... I was trying to install Oracle 9i
Release 2 on Linux and I unfortunately followed 2 or 3 different sets of
directions for establishing the Oracle user account and dba account.

Regardless, I can no longer start in runlevel 5 gui mode now ... I don't
want to reinstall Red Hat yet again, and lose the files I've just downloaded
plus many other valuable files just because of this damned problem ... this
is twice now ...

I have these clues: the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file, which ends with:

"Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!"

I've located the xfs files but haven't modified them. Changed nothing so
far.

When I try to restart I always get: "could not open default font
'fixed'.

If I do this: /sbin/service xfs status
I get the following: "dead but pid file exists".

How can I (should I?) locate and kill that file/process?

Can someone please help?

Nick

Getting back with version information

4.2.1 version 11 revision 0 release 6600
First, use a new floppy which should already be formatted for DOS.
If not then use your Windows whatever computer to format it - for
simplicity's sake.
Take the disk, insert into floppy drive and type:

   mount /dev/fd0

You should see the green light on the drive light up.
Check your fstab file by typing:

   cat /etc/fstab

You should see a line in there that looks something like:

/dev/fd0/mnt/floppy auto a bunch of other opitions

If it shows auto in the third column it means the system will atomatically
detect what file system (dos, linux, etc..) the floppy was formatted for and
mount that file system.

The column that reads /mnt/floppy is equivalent of typing a: in dos.

If the mounting step above worked then you would go to the floppy by typing:

   cd /mnt/floppy

To copy files to the floppy you do:

   cp /var/log/XFree86.0.log /mnt/floppy/XFree86.0.log

When you are finished copying the files you should unmount the drive:

   umount /mnt/floppy

Then send your attachment

release date 3 sep 2002
build OS FreeBSD 5.0-RC i386 ELF

I was being nice.
to send you the log file I need
to a) know how to access a 3.5 b) copy the file
to it c) get the info back off it onto a win 2000

and my disk, I can format but cant use,
dont have a heXed clue were to copy to if no disk

and the disk once formated to use freebsd wont work on

which is why I asked for any help at all.
I really didna mean to sound disrespectful really.

and as a windows system trouble shooter I feel like

Same problem.
Booted Knoppix from a CD. Ran great.
Said screw RH and installed Knoppix.

Hate to be so bubbly about knoppix, but in four instances of
X/video problem it has worked when others do not.
Don't know enough about X to know why.

Subject: [ctl-linux] window manager issues

Hi,

I installed RH8 on a box using a VIA EPIA-M Mini-ITX Mainboard. When I
booted the system I got an error message to the effect that the board
was newer than the version of XFree86 in the Red Hat 8.0 distribution.

Next I went to the XFree86.org site got the newest version (4.3.0),
installed it and ran xf86config. Now, I get a proper-looking gray
background and some text rendered on a broken looking terminal window,
while the little wristwatch twiddle never goes away and the console
doesn't accept input. In other, I think that XFree86 is running OK but
that I have some window manager issue.

Also, if I type startx in the alternate shell I get the following:

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
Please report problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

ls -l /tmp/.X0-lock shows that the lock file was last written at about
boot time as expected.

Does anyone have advice?

Joe

RE: [XFree86] radeon r300 chips

2003-06-30 Thread News/Info
There are drivers for the r300 chip

I use the Radeon 9700 and found 4.3.X drivers at:

http://www.schneider-digital.de

works ok it seems.

Only problem I have with 4.3.X on RH9 is the Esound server 'esd'.

I can log in and X comes up nicely, I can play sounds using the OSS driver,
but if I log out and try to log in again X hangs. Have to do a complete
reboot every time I log out.

There's a bug report on rh bugzilla about this, but nothing seems to be
happening with it.

Specifically the problem seems to be related to the Via Technologies VT8233
AC97 Audio Controller and ESound.

Hello,

When will R300 (radeon 9700pro, and others) be supported in XFree? I found
drivers, but they are for xfree 4.2.0 - currently I am using the xfree which
comes with Mandrake linux (4.3.0 i think).

Waiting for reply.

RE: [XFree86] Multiple local xdm displays

2003-06-27 Thread News/Info
The following is from a thread from this past week, but to save you time i
have included it below.

Hope this is what you were looking for:

Please note that this should not be done over a public network as XDMCP is
not a very secure protocol.

===Begin Paste===

Andy, you rock...
Thanks a bunch.

All the information you provided is accurate and functional. As far as the
security concerns you mentioned all of the hosts involved in this config are
in a R&D environment on non-routable nets. Otherwise I would just use ssh.

For any that are running RH9 there is also another way to get the same
results.
I found this after about 6 hours of reading.

This is for systems running RH9 and Gnome as the desktop.

The file /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf contains config paramters for xdm (gdm),
xdmcp, and the login screen you see when you start an X session.

Look for the '[servers]' section
The default server config is:

'0=Standard'

comment that line out and add a line that looks like this:

'0=Terminal -indirect serverhostname' (in my case it was jupiter)

This sets up your client machine to send an indirect X query to
'serverhostname' to find out what X servers are available.

On the 'serverhostname' (jupiter) you need to configure it so that it
replies to the query with a list of X servers that are accessible to handle
the request.

The configuration is done via a file called /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess

There are a number of ways Xaccess can be configured depending on your
needs. The file is pretty well commented so it is easy to understand.

Also, for additional information - which was also very helful I managed to
find a tutorail about all of this that even a neophyte like myself can
understand.

http://www.menet.umn.edu/~kaszeta/unix/xterminal/basics.html

WARNING: If you do read the documentation about XDMCP you will learn that it
is NOT a very secure protocol and if you plan on implementing this config
over a public network you need to take additional security measures.

Many thanks to Andy, and the author of the link above... Now when I boot
Linux is presents me with a screen that enables me to choose which linux box
I want to initiate an X session for. Very cool.

OSUniverse

PS. The documentation for XFree86 makes the book 'War and Peace' look like a
short poem, no wonder people would rather fight wars than learn computers.

Set the DISPLAY environment variable or use the -display option of your
client
application to specify which X server to connect to. Examples:

$ xterm -display jupiter:0
$ DISPLAY=mars:0 xclock

The number after the colon says which numbered server to connect to, in case
you run multiple servers on the same machine. If one server manages
multiple
screens (like if you use a multihead configuration without xinerama), add a
period and a screen number, as in xterm -display jupiter:0.0

> What config is required on jupiter to allow X access from mars?

jupiter$ xhost + mars

> What config is required on mars to enable me to launch an X session on
> either mars or jupiter?

mars$ xhost + jupiter
But I'm not sure I understand your question correctly...

Please somebody explain to the both of us how real X security is attained.
The above method (xhost) makes many insecure assumptions:

- You are the only person with shell access to either mars or jupiter.
- It is impossible for anyone to pretend to be mars or jupiter.
- Neither mars nor jupiter contain malicious or buggy scripts that can play
havoc with your X server.

At my university, they make the fatal mistake of having their NCD X servers
grant host-based access to the #1-used UNIX server on campus. This allows
me
to make my friends' mouse pointers turn to Gumby, but it allows anyone at
all
to track your keystrokes or even execute arbitrary code as you through stuff
like the send command in Tcl/Tk.

Your font server is not starting (started).

xfs is a font server for X

either comment out the 'FontPath' line or,

a better approach is to make sure that xfs is installed, configured, and
started as part of your normal boot process.

you can use ntsysv to make sure the xfs service starts during the boot
process.

Hello, I'm writing again cause now I have the board and I'm trying to have
it work (as it should cause it's listed among Redhat 9.0 supported

I've installed XFree86_4.3.0, and with the VESA driver I get to start the
server (x pointer on grey background) but after get the following error:

(EE) FAILED TO LOAD MODULE GLX (once-only module)

I'm also trying another way: following a suggestion from this mailing list I
downloaded a glx driver from
http://www.schneider-digital.de/html/download_ati.html that in the docs
lists Radeon 9800 as supported. Unfortunately my board isn't recognized
neither by the configuration utility nor during server start:

(WW) fglrx No matching devices
(EE) Board is Third Party

Actually board is a Hercules one.

'd prefer have the second way but also the first one is better than text

Thanks in advance for your help
