[XFree86] setxkbmap with user supplied data?

2003-03-02 Thread Robert Vollmert
Hello,

I'm wondering whether there's a way to use setxkbmap with data that's
not stored in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb, but in e.g. a user's home
directory or that's given directly on the command line. That would
allow using setxkbmap instead of xmodmap for all keyboard
configuration issues. If this isn't possible, are there security
issues or has it just no been implemented?

I'm using 4.2.1 btw., in case that matters.

Please CC: me on replies since I'm not subscribed to the list.

Cheers
Robert

[XFree86] ATI Radeon 7500

2003-03-27 Thread Robert Landrum
I picked up an ebay special Radeon 7500 and have been trying for about
two weeks to get it to work. I figure anything that takes two weeks to
get working is broken beyond repair, and thus, expect no resolution.

Firstly, I am running the debian installed version (from woody)...

[XFree86] ati R250 9000 washed out color

2003-06-11 Thread Robert Bliss
Hi

I have an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER Rv250 Radeon 9000 agp board on my system
which is running RH 9.0 kernel 2.4.20.

I have upgraded X to 4.3.0-13 and have been able to get X to run but
the colors are all washed out. I cought a glimps of someone else having
this problem but when I tried to find any response I lost the thread.

Any help would be appreciated I have attached my XF86Config file
and my /var/log/XFree86.0.log. The commented out Chipid which is
supposed to make the board look like a Radeon 8500 did not help.

   Any help would be appreciated

 Thanks Bob.

[XFree86] DRI problem with Matrox G450

2003-06-18 Thread Robert Schweikert
I have a Matrox G450 (dual head) card and when starting an Application
that uses openGL I get the following message on startup.

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

This happens on a SuSE 8.2 system where

libGL.so points to libGL.so.1.2.xf86_glx

when I point libGL.so to libGL.so.1.4.mesasoft I don't get the message
but I get floating point exceptins and the app crashes. The relevant
snipet from XF86Config is as follows.

Section "Device"
  BoardName"G450"
  BusID"1:0:0"
  Driver "mga"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  Option "NoHal"
  Screen 0
  VendorName "Matrox"
EndSection

What am I missing?

Thanks for your help.

Selling for Engineers
One-day Seminar

The Selling for Engineers seminar is a good introduction to effective sales
principles for people who are new to selling, and also a useful refresher
for 'old hands'. It applies to selling both technical products and
intangible services.

Many Sales Engineers have been learning the technical skills of their job
for years but have had little formal training in selling. This course
helps correct that imbalance.
Typical job titles of delegates: Sales Engineer, Account Executive and
Business Development Manager.

Fee for this event is £300.

Telephone Sales Prospecting for Engineers
One-day Workshop
This event is a practical workshop teaching people in technical companies
how to find new customers on the phone. It is applicable to business
development for both tangible products and intangible services. The first
session addresses whom to target, what to say and how to handle problems.
The remainder of the day consists of live sales calls with coaching from
Robert Seviour; the objective being to give delegates some positive
experiences of prospecting, make sales appointments and maybe sell
something!

Please note that this telephone sales prospecting event is restricted to a
maximum of six delegates to permit individual coaching.
Fee for this event is £300.

Closing Techniques Workshop
One day workshop
What if the customer says:
" " 'It's too expensive'
" " 'We're happy with our present supplier'
" " 'I want to think about it'

Can you handle these common objections?
By far the most efficient way to be more profitable is to turn more of the
enquiries you receive into paid orders. For this, the ability to resolve
objections is critical - either you close or you lose the sale.
And if you answer 'How much discount will you give me?' with: 'I'll ask my
boss', you waste profit, which could be yours with a better reply.

In only a day I will teach you techniques which overcome these objections
and more. You will be able to use them immediately to win profitable orders.

There is no need to lose business to your competitors or give big
discounts.

Fee for this event is £300.

If you have never had any formal sales training or need a refresher, don't
continue to work at a disadvantage.

[XFree86] Dual head SIS651 card: two screens on 1 X, or separate x servers ?

2003-10-16 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm newbie in this area and have following questions:

I have sis651 dual head card with video bridge for secondary TV/DVI output.
Now I have setup system according to sis manuals, but have questions:
- in manuals it is said that secondary output should always be master
(initializes first) ? Now I get login screen on TV, but would really like to
switch and have login and master screen on first VGA and only smaller X
desktop(running subset multimedia applications on TV out - like Freevo) on
secondary TV output - any hint.
- I can also have two input devices (mouse+keyboard for VGA, and ATI remote
wonder (RF remote) as mouse+keyboard) so screens could be fully independent.
So 1 or two X servers, this is the question and what are differences ?
Somewhere I read that X forbids access to HW - that means also for another X
server or am I wrong?
- Could I gain something if I use Framebuffer for secondary TV output ?

Thanks,

Regards,

Robert.

[XFree86] Mplayer too slow and crashing due to "bad usage of CPU/RAM"

2003-10-20 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I have problem that mplayer is too slow in xfree86 (I have sis651 chipset -
I've tried 4.3 with separate sis drivers and 4.3.99.14 with builtin sis
driver). It plays quite slowly and from now and then crashes with signal in
"video_decode" due to "Bad usage of CPU/ram". It crashes immediately if I
fforward or backward.

I saw entry 414. in Changelog and wonder whether this is the same problem.
What was problem in 414. and was it solved OK or it remains ?

[XFree86] Sis driver: Dual head 2 screens quick question

2003-10-25 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I have dual head system on sis315. I've switched Xinerama off to have 2
independent screens. I get that OK, but have question:
- Xfree establishes both screens by himself according to XF86Config. Can I
do it manually and possibly with different window manager in each screen ?
Where should I start looking - what files ?
- I have keyboard and ATI remote that acts as another mouse and keyboard.
Can I have for each screen separate keyboard and mouse? Or at least can I
forbid mouse to go into second screen ?

Thanks in advance,

Robert.

Re: [XFree86] SiS315 Dual Head separate x servers/WMs

2003-11-04 Thread Robert Rozman
Hello,

I'm trying to do the same with Freevo. Could you give more info about your
setup ?

How do you separate sessions (I couldn't do this with gdm - If I autologin,
both screens are logged in) ?

Thanks,

Subject: [XFree86] SiS315 Dual Head separate x servers/WMs

Hi!

Im trying to do the following setup.
Running a KDM session on CRT1 on my regular monitor while tty2
autologins and start a x session on CRT2/TV and running fvwm and
autostarting MythTv (Video recording software).

Maby it could be possible to run it as dual head in "Normal" mode but is
it then possible to start different window managers.

It might be possible to run it in xinerama but i'm unsure on how the
keyboard would be handled.
I don't need any keyboard for the CRT2 session as all input is done with
lirc?

Would this be possible at all, with --prefbusid patches or do i need a
second graphics card + --prefbusid patches.

Any help or ideas would be great.

[XFree86] Linux Laptop Xfree 4.3.0.1

2004-02-19 Thread Robert C
Hello. Im setting up Linux from Scratch on a Compaq 12XL300 laptop . My issue
is when I run X, it insists on going out the external monitor port, to detect for
monitors. If I have a monitor plugged in, it initializes my lcd no problem, and
everything works. But if no monitor is plugged in, then the lcd never comes up, at
all. I have looked into this laptops bios, and there is no function key or option in
the bios to disable the external vga port. I was hoping if there is a way to tell
XFree86 not to do that kind of detection. Ive tried after hours many options,
including from basic single mode configurations, to dual heads, and had the same
result. Also de options NoDDC, and int_disp. Please help!! Thank you

[XFree86] X starts slowly on C&T F68554

2004-03-02 Thread Robert . Butora

Hi all,

it takes about 10 sec for X to startup (on a notebook 266MHz Pentium MMX).
After startx, X switches to graphic mode and then the screen is dark for
about 10 sec and then the background appears and the window manager comes up normally.

There is a similar efect also when switching back from console.
I experienced no problems after init. The server works nicely.

The XFree86.0.log is error-free, it has a warning about missing
/dev/apm_bios and MTRR's, which I suppose is not the problem (?)

This leaves with no clue what else to check, where to look.
Any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot,
Robert

[XFree86] Asus Pundit (sis 651) : High CPU usage for X in mplayer - are these values sane ?

2004-03-11 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I've upgraded to kde3.2 , upgrade X (and then downgrade again - now is
4.3.0-29 I think (Suse supplied Xfree), put new
sisdrv in it) but now I can't get previous performance of system (video was
played fluently, low cpu % from X).

Now I have cpu between 20-30% on AVI and 40-50% on mpeg2 recorded from pvr
350 (but I guess this more depends on needed rescaling).

I'm on Suse 9.0, so I guess mtrr is enabled by default and I don't now where
to look further.

I've tried:
xvtest gives approx 230 FPS.
x11perf shmoput500 gives 210/sec

I don't know what to see in xvinfo but it shows no problem at least to
"blind" person like me.

It seems like HW scaling is off, but don't know what to check or repair to
get it working. If I try mplayer with -vo x11 in takes less cpu (6-8%), but
when I do -vo xv it goes to described percentages and it also won't scale to
fullscreen.

I've tried to restore XF86Config but obviously turned some modules on that
gave me some hard freezes so I am not to happy to make further tries. Could
you please
send me example config that works with XV so I'll take a further look for
problem or any other advice how to track the problem ?

Any other hint, check up to do ?

Thanks in advance,

Robert.

Hi,

I'm sending files requested to give proper help. Like I said it seems like
Xv is not working (I get lower cpu if I set -vo x11 in mplayer). I suspect
that software scaling is going on, but don't know what to do to correct this
( I get CPU for X 40-50% and for mplayer or mythtv frontend about 20%). I
have Asus pundit, with P4 2.4 G.

I'll appreciate any help, since this is the only major problem left...

I have:

uname -a -> Linux pundit 2.4.21-144-default #1 Fri Nov 14 00:01:36 UTC 2003
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

cat /proc/mtrr >
reg00: base=0x ( 0MB), size= 512MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x1c00 ( 448MB), size= 64MB: uncachable, count=1
reg02: base=0xdc00 (3520MB), size= 64MB: write-combining, count=1
reg03: base=0xe800 (3712MB), size= 32MB: write-combining, count=1
reg04: base=0xe140 (3604MB), size= 4MB: write-combining, count=1

I'm attaching xfree log as suggested. I'm using Suse 9.0 pro and xfree is
something like 4.3.0-29 version (stock provided with Suse, but did upgrade
and downgrade again cause of same problems - but know it doesn't work also
in stock version of xfree...)

Thanks in advance for any help,

Regards,

Robert.

Re: [XFree86] Asus Pundit (sis 651) : High CPU usage for X in mplayer - are these values sane ?

2004-03-15 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

thanks a lot for help. I'm not at the machine but do know that framebuffer
is running probably cause Suse has boot splash routine integrated, so Vesa
Fb is fired at the start when bootsplash screen is showed. I also get
occasional warning in /var/log/messages about some problems with mtrr.

I'll try 32Mb when I get home.

BTW,

is sisfb already in Suse supplied kernel or can it be added as module to
working kernel or should I recompile from scratch ?

Thanks,

Robert.

2004-03-16 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I've tried reduceing memory to 32M in bios.

That particular warning goes away, but high cpu problem persists.

Yes, it goes away.

There is note in example-config that one can override automatic detection
with this one. I've commented it our, but no difference.

I'm attaching new Xfree.log in case it helps.

Thanks in advance for all help,

Robert.

Re: [XFree86] Asus Pundit (sis 651) : High CPU usage in xv ?

2004-03-18 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'm still fighting with high cpu usage in xv extension whem playing media
files (xine, mplayer, vlc) under Suse 9.0 , xfree 4.3.0-29 and sis 651 with
latest sis drivers.

All log outputs seems fine, just xvtest is at low 200 FPS and cpu is hig
(30-50%) when playing video that does rescaling.

Are there any utities to check what is going on in xv extension (xine-check
reports all fine) ?
What should I try to find solution ?

I'm attaching xvinfo (all other relevant logs are attached to my previous
posts) if anything suspicious is in there ?

PS.: system performance was OKsome time ago, then did some upgrades and now
it won't perform as needed - so I guess there is someking of settings
problem...

I kindly ask for any advice, help, cause this is too hard for me as newbie.

Thanks for any help in advance,

regards,

Robert.

Re: [XFree86] Asus Pundit (sis 651) : High CPU usage in xv ?

2004-03-19 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I have upgraded to xfree 4.4 (also latest sis_drv.o) and it doesn't help (at
least in noticeable way) - cpu is still high, xvtest gives around 220 FPS

I'm attaching log and kindly ask for any idea, help or advice how to solve
this. Are there any tools to properly track this problem inside xv ?

Thanks in advance,

regards,

Robert Rozman

[XFree86] Asus Pundit and xv - what's your experience

2004-03-25 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'm recently posting about my problems with Asus Pundit slow xv performance
(Suse 9.0, P4 2.4G , xfree 4.4, sis 651 chipset - I get with xvtest around
200 FPS).

Obviously I have no obvious options to tackle this problem (Thomas ran out
of ideas), so would like to ask about your experiences, troubles, advices
with this machine/chipset and xv ? I had working configuration, but then did
security upgrades and it didn't work anymore (also after downgrade to
previous system). There are some suspects to o_sync wulnerability of Suse
systems, but how can I check that (cat proc/mtrr - anything else) ?

In my case everything seems fine from logs, just xv performance is bad
(x11perf gets better results 400/sec)...

Regards,

Robert.

Re: [XFree86] Asus Pundit (sis 651) : High CPU usage in xv ? - solved

2004-03-25 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I've solved my problems. I've searched faqs and found this one:
a.. Xv is terribly slow and takes 30% CPU time or more. What's wrong?
b.. As of 06/05/2003, there is a confirmed bug in the SuSE 8.2 XFree 4.3
packages and probably in XFree 4.3 packages of some other distributions as
well. I know of at least Debian's 4.3.0pre1v1 containing this bug, too. This
is no SiS driver bug and there is no real workaround available. However, on
some systems, especially Athlon based ones, it helps setting the option
XvUseMemcpy to false. Later versions of XFree86 will hopefully fix this
problem rendering this option unneccessary. (Technical explanation: There is
a problem with memory access in these versions of XFree86, rendering
memcpy-operations to video RAM extremely slow. SiS hardware is not the only
one affected, there were numerous complaints from users of other hardware,
too. This bug is also known as the "O_SYNC bug". If you want to know more,
search the archive of the xdevel mailing list for a thread named "Athlon
related mystery".)
Setting XvUseMemcpy to 0 solved my problems. It seems that this setting is
still important (I have Suse 9.0, xfree 4.4 and still had problems).

Thanks to Thomas for this info.

Regards,

Robert.

Re: [XFree86] Asus Pundit and xv - what's your experience

2004-03-25 Thread Robert Rozman
Thomas,

I'd like to personally thank you for your effort. It seems like XvMemcpy
setting was solution for me, althought it says in faq that this problem
should be gone with newer versions of xfree (I have 4.4).

I think that maybe stressing this setting little more would prevent someone
else going on my route...

Robert.

[XFree86] Spawning x based on sis-driver auto detection of available devices

2004-03-26 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'd like to do following setup (I have Pundit with sis 651 chipset with two
possible output devices):
- if I have only first VGA device available I'd like to spawn certain X with
Freevo app on this screen
- if I have first + second device (TV out) that would spawn X with Freevo
app on second device and normal X with desktop on primary VGA.

I've read in sis driver manual that if it detects two devices with proper
settings it'll spawn two independent X screens - I'd just like to specify
what to spawn on each device in case of one and in other case of two
devices.

Is this possible and doable with XF86Config settings or some other utility ?
Any examples ?

Sorry for newbie language, I'm just getting started in this area.

Thanks in advance,

Robert.

[XFree86] 2 screens on sis driver: Can I have different desktops in them (gnome, kde) ?

2004-04-28 Thread Robert Rozman
Hi,

I'd like to better know possibilities that I have when using 2 screens
(Xinerama mode off) - it says in Thomas' site that in this case:

Quote: "Dual head" means that the driver will set up two different screens,
eventually with different resolutions and different color depths, on CRT1
and CRT2. You get two independent X server sessions in (non-Xinerama) dual
head mode, and you cannot move windows from one screen to the other.

Can I have gnome on one screen and kde on other ? Where are settings for
what server to run on first and what on second screen ?
Can I run normal X desktop on one screen and media application that can run
without window manager on another ?

How to setup this ?

Thanks in advance,

regards,

Robert.

[XFree86] The Panels are Too Big For The Screen

Hi All. I hope someone can help. I am trying to install Red Hat 9. I have
partitioned the drive and run a full install both to a formatted disk and also
to one drive with Red Hat already on it (saying format). I take the machine
chosen devices. Each time the letters on the logon panel overlay themselves and
the tool bar is way too big. Once in the icons are too big and the panels are
about 60% showing (ex. date panel you can't get to buttons). Maybe someone has
an idea what I am doing wrong and/or how to fix it. Please help a frustrated

[XFree86] Problem with displaying

2006-02-10 Thread Robert Mckeon
After my computer boots, the screen and the keyboard flash off every
few seconds, and then they flash back on. They are on while the
computer is booting, but after that, I can't get them to stay on. Also,
the startx (or xstart, whichever one it is) does not work, and I don't
know why. This all started when the system gave me some error with
graphical interface, and I ignored it. So now my computer with linux
can't be used at all. How do I fix this?

[XFree86] Building Xvfb on Sparc running Solaris 8

2006-05-09 Thread Robert Milaszewski

I tried building Xvfb on Solaris 8 running on sparc using
nativ sun's compiler. I can successfully build the server
without glx extensions. Problems start when I try to include
glx extensions by adding this line to host.def :

#define BuildGlxExt YES

And even when eventually I manage to compile Xvfb executable
glx extensions do not seem to be present as reported by glxinfo.

Any help would be greately appreciated.

Re: [XFree86] Building Xvfb on Sparc running Solaris 8

2006-05-17 Thread Robert Milaszewski

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your help. I got XFree86 v. 4.6.0
I set the following defines in host.def

#define XVirtualFramebufferServer  YES
#define BuildXFree86OnSparcSunOS YES
#define BuildGlxExt YES

And I used Sun C 5.7
Sun C++ 5.7
compilers.

I had problems compiling with this setup.
I also tried compiling XFree86 v 4.6.0 using
gnu's gcc v 2.95.2 but that did not work either.
Can you give me more detailes on how you
compiled Xvfb with glx extensions on Sparc
with SunOS 5.8?

thanks,

I've verified that this works in XFree86 4.6.0, given its rework of
extension support in the various X servers. But, for now, you will
still need to build with a host.def containing ...

#define BuildXFree86OnSparcSunOS YES

I'm actually using Solaris 7, but that shouldn't matter too much.

GCC 2.95.2 is quite old. I recommend 3.2 or newer. I'm currently
using 4.0.1.

Your host.def settings above should give you something that compiles &
runs right out of the box.

#define BuildGlxExt YES

And even when eventually I manage to compile Xvfb executable
glx extensions do not seem to be present as reported by glxinfo.

I've verified that this works in XFree86 4.6.0, given its rework
of extension support in the various X servers. But, for now, you
will still need to build with a host.def containing ...

#define BuildXFree86OnSparcSunOS YES

Thanks for your help. I got XFree86 v. 4.6.0
I set the following defines in host.def

#define XVirtualFramebufferServer  YES
#define BuildXFree86OnSparcSunOS YES
#define BuildGlxExt YES

And I used Sun C 5.7
   Sun C++ 5.7

I'm actually using Solaris 7, but that shouldn't matter too much.

GCC 2.95.2 is quite old. I recommend 3.2 or newer. I'm currently
using 4.0.1.

Your host.def settings above should give you something that compiles
& runs right out of the box.

I rebuild XFree86 v 4.6.0 using gcc v3.4.5
Xvfb built but I do not see glx extensions
included in it.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure. Please post (or send me privately) the output from
xdpyinfo and glxinfo run against the display created by your most
recent build of Xvfb.

Thanks.

Marc.

I think you need a depth higher than 8, i.e. add "-screen 0
1280x1024x16" to the above Xvfb command line.

[XFree86] Installing XFree86 v 4.6.0

2007-03-19 Thread Robert Milaszewski

Hello,

Is it possible to install X in directory other than /usr/X11R6
without any modifications to the existing X installation so
that I have complete alternative X environment that I can use
for testing of X applications using Xvfb?

thanks,

[XFree86] XFree86 and Apple Studio Display 17" LCD DVI

2003-08-14 Thread Robert D. Arbeit
I had previously posted a note that I could not get XFree86 to work with
the Apple Studio Display 17" LCD via DVI port on a Radeon 7500 card. The
Apple monitor remained blank. I knew the hardware was ok because I could
drive a (borrowed) Sony monitor. Note that this hardware combination worked
under Windows XP with no difficulty.

I was never able to resolve this despite 2 weeks researching, modifying
configs, trying CVS drivers, and very generous help from several people
working on XFree86.

Finally, based on other suggestions, I bought a Nvidia card (a lot cheaper
than getting a new monitor ). Out of the box with the standard
XFree86 driver ("nv") the screen lit up (first time that had happened with
XFree86) but showed only hash - no image. As soon as I installed the Nvidia
driver ("nvidia" downloaded from their site), the monitor worked
gloriously.

I post this for the record and with the hope it will help someone else in
the future. But I think the experience also makes another point -- the
long-term success of Linux depends in part on active support from the
commercial hardware sector.

And I for one, think the Linux community might be more explicit in their
support of those companies that are responsive. I built this homebrew PC
explicitly to run Linux -- but in all my readings of various forums there
was no clear statement that Nvidia cards were more likely to work with
unusual monitor situations than Radeon cards. I bought the Radeon card
largely by chance. Next time I see a "what hardware is best with Linux"
post, my response will be to explicitly recommend Nvidia.

Another obvious -- more important -- example of the importance of corporate
support (support, not ownership) is IBM's very clear, forceful response to
the OSC "lawsuit" (I may have the corporate ID wrong -- apologies). I
understand that IBM is motivated by "enlightened self-interest" here -- but
such insight is going to be key to the success of the open-source movement.

Again, many thanks to all those in the Linux community who responded to my
posts and offered suggestions.

[XFree86] gnome-terminal text selection enhancement

2003-10-07 Thread Robert T. Drury
Using the mouse, I found reverse text selection (left motion) a problem
- what I consider "correct" is to start a forward selection in the right
half of the char cell, and a reverse selection in the left half of the
char cell. This is how mozilla and gedit work, and I think irix terminal
too.

Tested on multi-gnome-terminal-1.4.1 and appears to carry forward to
zvtterm.c 1.161 in CVS.

in zvtterm.c,
zvt_term_button_press,
zvt_term_button_release,
zvt_term_motion_notify
- add term->charwidth/2 in the numerator where converting x pixel
position to x character position - this shift selection to right by 1/2
char width

x = ( x - ( widget->style->klass->xthickness + PADDING ) +
term->charwidth/2 ) / term->charwidth;

then, get rid of the call to vt_fix_selection in zvt_term_motion_notify
because it screws up selection and it seems to be unnecessary during motion

[XFree86] chipset unknown

2003-12-01 Thread Robert A Kingman
Hi,

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite 2595XDVD laptop.

When I run SuperProbe (output below) it sayes to report the unknown
chipset. I've been using this laptop for many years, through many
xfree86 upgrades and probably should have reported this a long time ago.

The only problem I have is switching from Win/NT to Linuxi with just
a reboot. Something does not get reset and all colors are extreamly
washed out. If I power off and then boot linux - no problem.
