[XFree86] black and white

2003-10-17 Thread Ryan

After installing slackware newest I go to console and type
xwmconfig and select KDE then I do startx. Then it loads to a black and white polka
dot screen and just sits there doing nothing. I tried deleting the config and
making a new one using xf86config and it does the same thing. I don’t
know what it could be... I have a cirrus CL-GD7548 graphics card in this 133
MHz lap top with a 12” monitor which I don’t know the specs on. Is
this a common bug or a mistake, could you please point me in the right
direction.

Thanks,

Ryan

2003-03-02 Thread Ryan Gray

Hello,

I have just tried to install Red Hat Linux version 8.0 and
it installs properly but when I reach the command prompt after a seemingly
successful installation I get the error:

(EE) VESA(0): No matching modes

(EE) Screen(s) found but none have a usable configuration

Fatal server error.

No screens found.

I have tried installing multiple times and booting with
different monitors, the monitor I was originally using couldn’t be
identified during the probe so I hooked up another one that was successfully
probed, but the end result is still the same.

I know that the CD’s work because they have
successfully installed the os on a friends computer with no complications.

Any help you could offer is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ryan Gray ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

[XFree86] mga on 4.3.0?

2003-06-07 Thread Ryan Underwood
Hi,

Is anyone having success using a MGA G400 with DRI on 4.3.0? Ever since
I upgraded to the preliminary 4.3.0 debian packages from a working 4.2.1
installation, texturing simply is not working. Simple poly programs
like glxgears run fine and are fast, but running something like quake
produces the correct poly output, but the textures are all corrupt and I
get errors in the console about texture uploads failing.

Any ideas or input would be appreciated. I'm also still trying to track
down a hard machine hang that occurs randomly upon exiting a SDL 3D
program with the G400 driver, but I can't really get much further
debugging that until I figure out what the texturing problem is.

Thanks,

Re: [XFree86] mga on 4.3.0?

2003-06-10 Thread Ryan Underwood
Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion, I updated my BIOS to no avail. The following
is what I receive when running an OpenGL program that uses textures:

Failed to upload texture, sz 32768
Memory heap (nil):
  heap == 0
  End of memory blocks
Failed to upload texture, sz 32768
Memory heap (nil):
  heap == 0
  End of memory blocks
Failed to upload texture, sz 131072
Memory heap (nil):
  heap == 0
  End of memory blocks
Failed to upload texture, sz 32768

And the textures in the program are all corrupted. This worked prior
to XFree86 4.3.0 (using the unofficial Debian packages).

Any ideas?

IIRC, the Oxygen cards had a Cirrus VGA core (I had one in my Alpha
too). You may have luck with the Cirrus driver, though you would have
to verify the chipset model through a PCI scanner or something of that
sort. Another complication is that the VGA core may only have 1MB or
less of video RAM dedicated to it. Unfortunately that Oxygen chip is
from back when 3Dlabs wasn't even 3Dlabs yet, and it's very unlikely
that we will ever see documentation for it.

Under your "Device" section for the card:
 Option "AGPMode" "4"

Note that only certain G400 cards support AGP4X. Many cards on the used
market do not.

G4+MDHA32GR - G400 32MB AGP 2X
G4+MDH4A32GR - G400 32MB AGP4X

G4+MMDHA32GR - G400MAX AGP2X
G4+MMDH4A32GR - G400 MAX AGP 4X

Note the addition of the '4' in each 4X-certified model.

Basically the user's .xsession is run when the user starts the X server.
My .xsession starts a couple apps and backgrounds them (so that they are
always started up each time I start XFree86). It also runs the script
that starts a window manager on the second head, and then starts a
window manager on the first head. Note that the window manager is not
backgrounded, since if the .xsession script exits, then the X server
will quit as well.

man XF86Config should work on most distros.. however, it may not cover
all of the available options. My best bet has been search mailing lists
for people with similar configurations and go from there :)

Good luck,

Glad you got it working! :) Yeah, that stupid HAL module is needed for
the second head, I should have mentioned that. Actually there is code
around to drive the second head e.g. in the linux framebuffer subsystem
and DirectFB, I guess it would only be a matter of someone taking the
time to eliminate the necessity of the binary component by reusing code
from one or more of those places.

BTW, does anyone have DPMS working on the second head of a G400? On my
setup, DPMS works fine on the first head, but on the second head never
powers off when the server goes into power saving mode -- instead, it
displays some random color on the monitor, sometimes bright white, which
couldn't possibly use any more power, thereby negating the point of the
power saving modes in the first place. ;)

Thanks,

To follow up to this, I found that 'xset dpms force suspend' seems to
give me a blank screen on the 2nd head, but it does not seem to power
off the monitor.

Also, scanning through the CHANGELOG, I see the following changes which
might be relevant, all of which were made prior to 4.1.0 release:

434. Fix a problem with the mga G400 2nd head going into power saver
mode when it should be blanked, and enable DPMS for the 2nd head
(#A.358, Craig Leres).

842. Fix for G400 crtc2 blank screen color (#4205, Antti Tapaninen).

Anyone have any more info about these? According to the changelog, not
only should I not be having the "blank screen color" issue on crtc2, but
DPMS should also be enabled on the second head. :)

I have a G400MAX running XFree86 4.3.0...

Thanks,

If 3D speed is not critical, Matrox G400MAX is still an excellent choice
all around and can be had for next to nothing. The 3D speed is
sufficient in UT but probably not for any newer commercial games.

[XFree86] *ERROR* Process 15549 using kernel context 0

2003-11-03 Thread Ryan Reich
I'm sure you've seen this one before, but I can't find an answer anywhere. I
used to get DRI with my Radeon 7000, but I patched my 2.4.22 kernel with -ck2
and now I get the following message in dmesg:

[drm] Initialized radeon 1.7.0 20020828 on minor 0
[drm:radeon_unlock] *ERROR* Process 15549 using kernel context 0

/var/log/XFree86.0.log doesn't show any errors, but I do get a warning

(WW) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available

and above that,

(WW) RADEON(0): Cannot read colourmap from VGA. Will restore with default
drmOpenDevice: minor is 0

drmOpenDevice: minor is 0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0

drmGetBusid returned ''

And a little after, it says that acceleration is enabled and direct rendering is
disabled. Which, according to glxinfo, it is.

I am fairly sure this has something to do with grsecurity, since if I don't
compile it in I can get DRI, but nothing I can do (sysctl, chpax) changes
anything if it is in.

Obviously this skirts the line between a kernel issue and an X issue, but I
thought I would ask here first.

[XFree86] mga_vid VT switching hangs

Just a quick and silly question: does anyone know if there is a
limitation in mga_vid's design, that causes a dead system when switching

those things where the obvious solution is "Don't do that then", but I'm

How about with the s3/s3virge accelerated driver, instead of the VESA

Re: [XFree86] xwindows problem with linux

2003-12-10 Thread Ryan Underwood

This is a VFAQ (Very Frequently Asked Question). There is something
wrong with your font server (xfs). It needs to either be restarted, or
the problem causing it not to start must be located and fixed.

To all: Why doesn't Red Hat configure the X server to look for a basic
set of fonts via the filesystem instead of xfs, and only go to xfs for
other fonts besides the ones necessary to start the server? It seems
they are not taking advantage of the fact that the dependency on xfs was
removed in XFree86 4.x.

What is fd 8 in this case? If it is /dev/dri/*, then that is DRM_LOCK
which I have also had problems with. In my case, I am able to go to a
VT and kill the application which gives me the X server back. I guess
that this happens during mga_dma_flush but don't see where exactly.
It happens during exiting quake2 for me nearly every time.

Can you post some more details like your /proc/pci, server log, and
hardware configuration of your system including what is attached to what
port on the matrox card?

I just noticed that your ioctl had returned instead of hanging with

That happens in DRM(lock):
if ( signal_pending( current ) ) {
ret = -ERESTARTSYS;
break;
}

which means I guess there is a signal that something isn't handling if
it is just sitting there. I'm not sure if this is an application level
problem or at the server.

Re: [XFree86] DRI compilation errors

You need to check out the Mesa module from /cvs/mesa and the xc module
from /cvs/dri. Then, point the path in host.def under the DRI tree to
the Mesa directory that you checked out.

You don't need to install Mesa separately. You do need a Mesa tree from
the DRI project, however. That is what the DRI XFree86 tree is looking
for when it builds. Both DRI Mesa and DRI XFree86 are available from
the DRI cvs server; Mesa is under /cvs/mesa in the 'Mesa' module and
XFree86 is under /cvs/dri in the 'xc' module.

The documentation could be a little more clear on the procedure to
bootstrap from CVS.

[XFree86] I deleted xfree86..

2004-01-31 Thread Ryan Bradley
Let me first give the disclaimer that I am an idiot, or at least, I am a linux newbie..

About a year ago I was trying to install perlmagick to get imagemagick to work with
movable type on my redhat 7.3 box which I have through rosehosting.com.

As part of that I mess I installed xfree86, but came the conclusion once everything
was working that it was not necessary for me to have it in order for perlmagick to
work correcly.

About 2 weeks ago I was informed I was using up more than my share of storage space
and so I went through and removed everything I didn't need. This included xfree86.
Instead of uninstalling it I just deleted everything that seemed to be associated with
xfree86.

Now I find that perlmagick needs those library files to work correctly. I am trying
to reinstall xfree86 but as far as I can tell it is assuming it's just upgrading
rather than installing completely fresh. Is there a way to force complete reinstall?
Or is there a way for me to make it realize that I deleted everything (except a very
important config file..)?

this is what I get when I try to install:

sh Xinstall.sh

Welcome to the XFree86 4.2.1 installer

in those directories, and this may include some configuration files
that may have been customised.

If you are installing a version different from 4.2.1, you
may need an updated version of this installer script.

I'm no RedHat expert, I've only ever used Debian and LFS, but
the best way to install or remove any package from a system that uses
package management is with the package tools.Since RedHat has gone
enterprise, 7.3 may not be officially supported by them, but I'm sure you
can find mirrors that still carry 7.3 rpm's. Also, Progeny is offering
RedHat package support as well.As for how to re-install, You'd need
advise from a RedHat user, but basically, fetch the rpm's and use the rpm
tools to re-install them. I know there is a way to force a reinstall, I
just don't know the exact commands. The instructions you quote are
XFree86's own installation tool, which may or may not conflict with what
RedHat expects from X. I know it conflicts with Debian. You are better off
sticking with rpm's than mixing different packages.Hopefully a
RedHat user will jump in here with the exact commands to fix your

If you are only doing work under Linux, do you need the 3D-features of
the card? If not, all recent NVIDIA and ATI cards will meet your
requirement, as 2D support for all of those cards is already implemented
in XFree86. If you need open source 3D, then you are limited to Matrox
G-series (no T&L) or ATI chips below R300 on this list:

http://dri.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/ATIRadeon?action=highlight&value=CategoryHardware

There is an open source S3 Savage 2D/3D driver in the works but it is
not ready for end users yet.

You aren't going to get top 3D performance together with open source
drivers at the moment, because the manufacturers are not releasing
programming information for their latest chips. 2D performance should
be excellent on any card you choose.

IIRC, Radeon 9800 is R350 which is not supported in DRI.

It looks like the graphics is working fine. What is wrong is at the
very end -- it can't find your pointer device. Does NetBSD put it at
/dev/psaux like Linux? If not, you need to change that in your XFree86
config file.

No, the XFree86 driver is definitely accelerated both 2D and 3D for all
G-series. But if you have lost 3D acceleration, that is a more
complicated issue than 2D (desktop) acceleration. 2D acceleration
should be enabled on any screen that is using the 'mga' driver. Make
sure you are not using a framebuffer or vesa driver by accident, because
those will be unaccelerated.

I've also seen this problem on the Dimension 2400.
Just came across this, which seems relevant:

Looks like a fix was committed in late January. I
haven't tested it yet, but it looks like this might
hit the nail on the head. You might give it a try...

I'm running into a problem getting X-Windows to run with a decent
resolution on a Dell GX 270 with the Intel 865 Graphics Cards (64 MB

flashing the BIOS with A02 and A01 with no luck. Right now, I have 3

third A03.

I can only get 1024x768 with 8 bit color depth running. Anything higher
gives the error "No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth". I'm running
Enterprise Workstation v3. Does anyone know how to fix this?

As soon as Matrox agrees to release the necessary programming
documentation to interested developers. IOW, when hell freezes over, at
the current rate.

You can get binary-only drivers which are unsupported by XFree86 from
Matrox AFAIK. They are only marginally supported by Matrox at any rate.

Buy from a vendor that offers the level of support you want, and be sure
to let his competitors know why they fell under your radar.

The X server in the current 'stable' release is extremely old. You
should consider upgrading to the XFree86 packages in the 'testing'

for this card.

It's using 8-bit color depth, which will make things look pretty rotten.
In the "Screen" section, change the Depth and the DefaultDepth to 24 and
see if that meets more with your expectations.

Check this file. Make sure it doesn't have strange permissions and that
the filesystem is not full. If necessary delete all the XFree86 log
files from that directory.

Perhaps your monitor provides no information via DDC. Try the read-edid
utility to see if this is the case.

The current XFree86 mga driver doesn't do DDC on the second head. The
X.Org driver can do this and works as far as I know.

I doubt it, MMIO only refers to a manner of accessing the hardware
registers. It is usually faster than PIO so it is preferred when
possible.

This sounds like a modeline problem. Have you played with xvidtune to
see if it can help? Or perhaps try a lower resolution. Does the
monitor work correctly at that resolution and refresh rate on a
different video card, or on the same video card running windows?

I'm not sure what you're asking specifically, but you could ssh into the
machine and start the X server from there, either as root or as a user
if you have permitted non-root non-console users to start the server.

Ooh, this should be "interesting".

No. Can you tail the log while it's starting up to see where it pauses?
Is there any output on the console that you started it from?

try with.

Support for this chip appears to not have been brought forward into the
XFree86 4.x driver. XFree86 3.3.6 supports it in case you wanted to try
that.

Something else you can try is to use the 'vesa' driver. I'm not sure if
your bios has sufficient VBE support to do it, but it's worth a shot.
This will be unaccelerated though it will give you high color modes.

The XFree86 driver doesn't use interrupts, but I find it very strange
that the chip's IRQ is connected to IRQ 0.

I would recommend filing a bug with Debian then. This mailing list

You might get lucky and someone is familiar with the specific version
you are running, but that is not too likely.

I've never done this. What I have done is replaced the X server binary
(/usr/X11R6/bin/X) and the modules in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules. This
worked without a problem.

I would recommend backing up your entire /usr/X11R6 directory and
/etc/X11 directory before trying any similar procedure.
