Re: [XFree86] no screens found !!!

2006-03-20 Thread Mark Vojkovich
The logfile implies that the XF86Config-4 file is configured to
use a framebuffer device (Driver "fbdev"), however, the kernel
does not support (or no longer supports) a framebuffer device.
You might want to try changing to the i810 driver (Driver "i810"
in the Section "Device" in the XF86Config-4 file). The i810
driver that comes with your server version *might* be new enough to
support your graphics card.

It seems that either your kernel supported a framebuffer device
and no longer does after your unclean shutdown, or the XF86Config-4
file got changed to use fbdev since the last time it was working.

I was going to suggest trying to get a copy of the kernel source of
the kernel that you're running and build a agpgart.o module, but it
looks like you're running 2.2.17, which is pretty ancient.

It may work, though if you get a copy of the kernel source for 2.2.17
and configure it to build agpgart support and then build it but only
copy out the agpgart.o module.

One problem /might/ be that it looks like your build kernel (2.4.x) is
pretty significantly different from your running kernel (2.2.x). It
might be that XFree86 configured itself for features present on a 2.4
kernel and is now confused by the difference of the 2.2 kernel. Maybe
if you rebuild on 2.2.17? And install a agpgart.o module?

This sounds like a crazy project, but I understand that it's sometimes
necessary and I hope it works out well for you.

2001. Glancing through the release notes, I see the SiS 650

Looks like you're trying to run a framebuffer-using Xserver with no
framebuffer. Try a recent version of Xfree with the standard Xfree86
xserver. Pick the driver for whichever graphics card you have.
Probably 'lspci' will give you some ideas about what's inside, if you

I have a few questions for you.

Have you configured XFree86 yet?
http://xfree86.linuxwiki.org/FAQMiscellaneous#head-91ac81654e284e4b03ba61cff83886b90fdf6570

If you have, where did you put the XF86Config file?
It is often placed here, "/etc/X11/XF86Config" and it sometimes has a different name,
XF86Config-4.

Finally, do you have the permissions set correctly on both the file itself and the
directory?
You will need to be able to have read permissions. Permissions are set using the chmod
command. See the man page for syntax.

I'm on thin ice here, as I have no experience with your setup, but my guess is
that since you didn't set up the TV, nor told X that it should use different
settings for the two display outputs, it autodetects (through DDC) the
ranges, and takes the lowest one (the one for your TV). Disconnect the TV to
see if your problems disappear. If so: properly set up the two displays, or
else you may be damaging your TV when you have it display an out of range
signal.

Re: [XFree86] no screens found

2003-07-22 Thread Jesse Hutton
Hi,

Try using Driver "s3virge" in the Device section for your video card.
Then remove Device "Accel" from the screen section.

Attached it the output log of what happens when I try and run startx, as
well as my XF86Config.
For what it's worth, I've got an s3 virge for video, a SYS 1510P for a
monitor (flatscreen; does 1024x768), I'm running 2.4.21 (custom built),
and debian unstable. Debian stable had exactly the same problem though.
I tried going to the (unsupported) 4.3 for debian and got the same error,
so I downgraded again.
This seems to be about par for the course with XFree86does anyone
know of an alternative? Even if its not a window-ing system, just
something to use to allow a bit more graphical interface? I've
re-installed 5 times now, and I either get "ServerLayout" --bad section
heading, when the XFreeConfig file is itself made from it's own config
program, or, as I've tried just about every server they have, the one
which you're supposedly not having to configure, the frame-buffer one,
simply states: device not found: /dev/fb0 (no, not /dev/fd0, but
/dev/fb0). The oddest thing is that one of the configuration makers,
xf86cfg, runs perfectly fine- I can see the sceen correctly, the mouse
works, keyboard's OK, card+monitor- both goodyet it won't let me use
that setup for the actual running of XFree86!
I give up... I've heard of a "mc" app, is that similar? I really had my
heart set on XWindows (that was one of my major reasons for getting
linux in the first place), but no matter what I do (or read- I've been
all through the HOWTO's, FAQ's, sites, linux documention project, etc,
etc, ) it's just not going to run.

as I can see your monitor needs a horizontal sync frequency between 30
and 60 kHz; and a vertical refresh between 70 and 90 Hz.
If this is not correct you can try to "release" the requirements, and,
for example, set up a HorizSync 30-70 and VertRefresh 55-90.

*** NOTE: this can DESTROY your display!! ***

if something strange happens kill immediately X with the zap
keys.(ctrl-alt-BS)
Another thing you can try, is changing the modelines; you can also tune
uf them after, using xvidtune (also here you can destroy your display)

I think this is Debian related; also I have the same thing, but it
doesn't affect the working of X

still strange.

hoping that will help you.

Usually, but not always, that error means that your video
card is too new to be supported by the XFree86 version you
have. We need to see your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file to be
sure because there could be other causes of that error.

The /var/log/XFree86.0.log file is more useful.

Hi Justin..

You'll need to provide more information for anyone to be able to help
you..

Send a copy of your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file..

cheers

You've got problems with your config file.

1) You are using the "nv" driver that comes with XFree86 but you are
trying to load the glx module from NVIDIA's binary release (and an
old one at that). Remove /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
so that it will use the one from Mesa that comes with XFree86 instead.

2) You've specified Option "UseFBDev" "true" indicating that a
framebuffer device should be used to setup the card rather than
letting the "nv" driver do it, yet you don't have a framebuffer
device in your kernel (I wouldn't recommend it either). Remove
   the UseFBDev option.

Alternatively, you could install the binary drivers from NVIDIA's
web site. I'd recommend version 3123 because 4191 had some problems.

The automatic detection of the capabilities of the LCD panel doesn't
work correctly. Which means that you need to specify this in the
configuration file for this to work.

In /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, in the "Monitor" section try to specify
something like this (taken from my config file here on my Inspiron
8000 with M4 and 1400x1050 panel :)/ You need to fuzz it into the
structure in your own configuration file, the important part is
specifying something sensible for VertRefresh and HorizSync:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName"Monitor Model"
VertRefresh 40-110
HorizSync 28-90
Option "DPMS"
Modeline "1400x1050" 107.85 1400 1450 1500 1999 1050 1058 1070 1150
EndSection

The 1400x1050 modeline is probably redundant now, when I first set
this up almost two years ago it was needed. :)
