[xmail] Relay problems
Hi list... Is it true that if an email is either from or too a local domain, it can be relayed without any further checks? If not, shouldn't this be the case? I have tried to set this up, but I still am getting 550 errors trying to send an email from a local domain account to a non-local account. Would any parts of my .tab files help? I think they are useful, but if you implement them, also add a switch for the second option that would allow the admin to choose whether the server will not respond to all clients for n seconds or just to the same IP/subnet/something.. [xmail] Re: Limit number of 550 Errors in single session?
The only option that I think is _really_ useful is the hard error limit. The others would be nice but not essential. Also make the default a reasonable number (like 100). Also make sure to include logging that this is why connections are being disconnected and the source IP. I agree. But I also feel that there are several options that XMail could = learn from Postfix without getting bloated. I think it would be a Goot = Thing (tm) to implement this feature. Hello Davide, Tuesday, October 22, 2002 you wrote: DL> Ok, let's have a poll ... how many of you find these options DL> _really_ usefull and would like to have them ? Very useful to me but. I have one IMAIL sever right now and I actually wrote a service to tail the log file, interrupt the smtp process during an attack, and then block the IP. While it was effective it also proved to be a maintenance nightmare. So I believe it needs to be done within the smtp dialogue directly. I think it is too much maintenance to block the IP. My experience with these dictionary attacks is that once interrupted the attack programs simply switch to the secondary mail servers and continue from where stopped. So you can't really stop them but at least I'd like to be able to prevent them from holding open the connection. I also agree about limiting program options. Someone is always going to want more. And the more options the more program maintenance and more places for failure. Whoa - "... you can never have too many options..."? Years ago I worked on an IBM mainframe supporting an online banking system - we used IBM's CICS. CICS go so loaded with bells and whistles that NO ONE (even IBM) knew how the all worked - or even what they were for. CICS turned into a slow monster. I hope Davide can hold the line somewhere.
