Can you lookup hotmail.com (A/MX) on your server? 417 means commonly
some DNS lookup problems ...

Please post the complete slog files.

[xmail] xmail not compiling

2005-03-11 Thread Spyros Tsiolis
Hello everyone,

Well, I'll be damned if I know what is wrong this time.
I've done it at least three times.
AFAIK, GCC and G++ are installed on a Slackware Linux v10.0 box.
The only thing I can think of at this moment is to download xmail again.

Here is the output :
...
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/local/xmail-1.21# make -f Makefile.lnx
g++  -O2 -I. -D__UNIX__ -D__LINUX__ -D_REENTRANT=1 -D_THREAD_SAFE=1
-DHAS_SYSMACHINE -c MkMachDep.cpp
MkMachDep.cpp:23:19: stdio.h: No such file or directory
MkMachDep.cpp: In function `int MkMachGenType(int, const char*)':
MkMachDep.cpp:52: error: `stdout' undeclared (first use this function)
MkMachDep.cpp:52: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
for
   each function it appears in.)
MkMachDep.cpp:55: error: `fprintf' undeclared (first use this function)
MkMachDep.cpp: In function `int main(int, char**)':
MkMachDep.cpp:63: error: `fprintf' undeclared (first use this function)
make: *** [MkMachDep.o] Error 1
...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Uhm is glibc(-devel) installed? I guess it isn't.

Wow, I don't think that box is able to compile many things, it seem that
you're missing header files from glibc, I don't know how they are called
on Slack ( glibc-devel ???) or if they are a separate package but you
may try next time an easyer to manage distribution like Mandrake or
equivalent

Try telneting to mx1.hotmail.com smtp port and sending a message by hand
and see what messages you get back and at what point in the transaction.

(-162) doesn't tell me a lot, but -232 (ERR_CONNECT) sounds like there
is no possibility for xmail to connect to hotmail.com on STMP-Layer.

The connection does not even born, or it is rejected soon after
establishment. Try to run a telnet SMTP session manually, from inside your
net first, and from another net in your area (if you can). Maybe Hotmail's
postmaster is an Italian and does not like Brazil since they have more
World Cup than we do ;)

[xmail] smtp.ipprop.tab not working...

2005-03-11 Thread Chad Fleenor
I'm having trouble getting email from this one certain person. I have
changed the email address of the user here to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm running
XMail 1.21 on RedHat Linux 9.0. It has been running very stable for the
last year and on this version for 40 days.

My logs say

smtp-20050311:"pikevillehospital.org" "pikevillehospital.org"
"66.0.197.186" "2005-03-11 10:30:21" "mail.mednetphysician.com" ""
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" "" "" "SNDR=ESPAM""" "0" ""

smtp.ipprop.tab

"66.0.197.0/24" "WhiteList=1"

"66.0.197.186/32" "WhiteList=1"

I know this part is redundant, but it was worth a try. I tried it with only
one line in there (being the last) then I went to the top, then both.

In the server.tab file I have the CustMapsList commented out,

Server.tab file

#"CustMapsList" "b1.spamcop.net.:1,list.dsbl.org.:1,dnsbl.sorbs.net.:1"

#"CustMapsList" "b1.spamcop.net.:1,list.dsbl.org.:1"

How can it still be that these emails are getting listed as ESPAM? It's
almost like the smtp.ipprop.tab isn't working.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Chad Fleenor

Go here, http://www.dnsreport.com/tools/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
They have 16 MX servers, only 4 MX records, and you are stuck in a crap
shoot. You happen to cache 4 down servers, untill you hit TTL, you are
out of luck. Then you have to pray the next round gets you live servers.

Does xmail always fail sending to hotmail or just some of the time? If
just some of the time then try several manual telnet sessions at
different times and see if you get the same results.

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-03-11 Thread Tony Shiffer
We have started to get these same errors - for the last 2-3 months. Never
any before then. It has happened sending to earthlink, hotmail, and some
others. Its does not allways seem to happen. Often, if the user resends
the message - it goes through just fine.

It includes the error -162's , and some times error text that says that
relaying is prohibited, or that the sender is not recognized as being
connected to that ISPs network (which they aren't, of course).

We have investigated DNS, RDNS, as well as the infastructure (NICs, cabling,
and even power supllies in the xmail server boxes.). Inone case, we even
had the ISP (level3.com) replace the network cable all the way from our
rack, back to the main switch. Nothing has made any difference.

It happens on xmail 1.13 run on one old box, and xmail 1.20. - both Windows
boxes. These boxes are in different locations on different subnets so they
have nothing in common as far as ISP, hosting location, or domains being
handled by xmail.

Tony

Perhaps the problem is that you are running Windows servers rather than
Linux, or even better, *BSD?
Or perhaps I shouldn't take advantage of this mail list to express
personal preferences?
No need to reply to that ... I'm just kidding. :)

However, and this probably doesn't help, I haven't had any of the
problems you are describing. It almost sounds like it might be a
geographical location issue (?). I have users sending to Hotmail
regularly, as well as Earthlink accounts, and there haven't been any
problems - I may have a lower volume than you do, though.

The only thing I can think of that seems to be a significant general
change is SPF - is it possible that this is related to that? Also, have
you verified that your IP isn't on any blacklists? Both Earthlink and
Hotmail have upped their anti-spam campaign pretty heavily.

Thats all I can think of!

Greetings all,
I couldn't agree with you more on ALL counts. I hate to sound like
a "me too". But I/ we host a few black lists (RBL's). So I thought
that it seemed the most likely resolution would be to check with
the problem domains (hotmail, earthlink) and see who they are using
as an RBL. Themselves, or one of the well known ones:
http://ordb.org/submit/ is a great way to check if your listed most
anywhere, and hence, blocked.

--Chris

P.S. *BSD truly *is* the best choice. ;)

[xmail] Re: Problems with hotmail.com

2005-03-11 Thread Jeff Buehler
By the way, now that I have had time to read these links a bit more (a
small Friday night party in my backyard got in the way), if you are
running exchange, this article might actually help you! Strangely
enough, I was (possibly) more correct in pointing the finger at Windows
(and the Windows DNS implementation, and Exchange) than I thought.

However, FreeBSD (my system of choice) was until recently opening and
not closing hundreds of file handles because of a bug in the code, so
lets keep this about solving the problem and not Windows. The good news
is that Linux and FreeBSD users can modify the code and recompile when
problems come up! Yay! Whoops, there I go ... Anyway, check this out -
I hope it helps.
