Check your xMail configuration, did you create all the directories listed at http://www.xmailserver.org/Readme.html#mailroot_structure You can ignore the number directories under spool, xmail will create those. Do all the filters.* files exist? When you modified any of the .tab files did you use real characters between the fields? Did you create the domains and user accounts by hand or did you use a manager program for xmail? Besides changing the default email address in server.tab what else did you change? Not sure what to tell you on that, then... It's very odd that it would completely close the telnet session like that - I'm suspecting that it's something other than xmail which is the issue. Have you tried connecting to the SMTP port and see if that's functioning? (I didn't see anything about it in your original message...) Or any other ports on the machine which are accessible? rommelaccount wrote: > The box isn't accessible from the internet with telnet. Hmm... Is this machine accessible from the net? I tried telnetting to mbuijtendijk.nl and the banner that came up was for a Kerio mail server... The telnet window closing - the only reason I know of for that to happen is an invalid character in the input (something non-ASCII). Otherwise, you would typically only receive an error message from the server. For example: +OK <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [XMail 1.20 POP3 Server] service ready; Thu, 16 Feb 2006 08:35:15 -0500 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -ERR Invalid command So, it sounds like there's a problem other than simply xmail involved here... rommelaccount wrote: > This is mine: > > +OK <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> [XMail 1.21 POP3 Server] service ready; Thu, 16 Feb > 2006 14:05:27 +0100 > > Whatever I do next...my telnetbox closes!! > > Gr. [xmail] Re: Spammers - How to block them.
Henri, that will be exactly your problem. Investigate your DNS setup, even do that Ethereal thing between your DNS forwarder and the RBL. Then you can see if the RBL didn't respond, or your DNS 'lost it'. DNS timeouts are a killer ! Hello Rob, You're probably right, it might be a DNS problem... I run dnsmasq (http://thekelleys.org.uk/dnsmasq/doc.html) on my server as a forwarding DNS server. It supports caching though that's useless when querying blacklist services. It seems to be quite fast but I did notice something funny with it. Taken from syslog: (1) query[type=1910] 122.132.43.200.dnsbl.sorbs.net from 127.0.0.1 forwarded 122.132.43.200.dnsbl.sorbs.net to 194.109.104.104 (2) query[A] 1.140.26.83.dnsbl.sorbs.net from 127.0.0.1 forwarded 1.140.26.83.dnsbl.sorbs.net to 194.109.104.104 reply 1.140.26.83.dnsbl.sorbs.net is 127.0.0.10 As you can see, there never came a reply to the first query because that ip address is not listed. It should reply 127.0.0.1 though! The second query did receive a reply, stating that the ip is listed. Maybe that's the problem? I have no idea why dnsmasq won't reply 127.0.0.1 though. Here's an exact copy of a POP3 telnet session with my mail server - the only change is to replace my password with "".
