 And as much as I am not a fan of MS or AOL, between the two of them
 they control way more than 0.001% of the mail traffic on the
 internet.  If you add all the hotmail users and aol users, I would
 argue that you have more than 30% of the internet mail users just in
 those two groups.  Plus even if just those two support SPF, that
 would cut down on about 50% of the SPAM, because it is those two
 addresses that spammers forge and use a lot of the time.  Maybe it is
 not a perfect solution, but heck if I/we could cut out 30% of the
 SPAM -- that would be an awesome start :)

The spammers are not stupid, so they don't use @[EMAIL PROTECTED] etc.
anymore and SPF is useless. ;(

 It says that :
 chroot: cannot execute /bin/bash: No such file or directory

then you need a bash in your chroot :)

# mkdir /chroot/xmail/bin (is not exists)
# cp /bin/bash /chroot/xmail/bin -a

and gain check the required libs by doing

# ldd /bin/bash


Then you can

# chroot /chroot/xmail/

and you have a chrooted bash. Now test perl and the av scanner.

 Why?

Maybe you did not set the DNS-Smarthost in server.tab to the DNS-Servers
used by the System resolver. In this case XMail looks up DNS-entry from
root-Zone to the specific Domain. Set the Smarthost and try again.

 The logs are still rotated at 23h - so i will wait till CEST is comming
 back in spring and then everything will be okay again - as i mentioned i
 linked the wrong logfiles to the right path and in that way i can live
 with this feature - but i really can't believe that only my systems are
 showing this behaviour - are there no other people running xmail on
 suse-linux / in central europe and can tell if their log-rotation is
 working fine?

 always on line. You can, when the line comes up, trigger an ETRN to the
 XMail server to tell it to try to flush the queue now.

it waits for a client to deliver the mail?

You could write a filter that rewrites the headers, a little perl script
with a regular expression

yes you can't define user groups, but maybe you can work with symlinks
(nerver testet that).

note that it's only user.tab, not [EMAIL PROTECTED] cuz the domain is there a
directory.

 I think (and I proved) that filters are ideal solution for my needs.
 But I have some small note/question. I discovered following behaviour:
 - suppose there is a my.domain handled by xmail (defined in domains.tab)
 - suppose there is a regular account [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 - suppose there is a mailproc.tab file defined for [EMAIL PROTECTED] (it
 contains mailbox command, but I'm not sure if this is important)

a mailproc.tab with only mailbox line in it is useless, because it's the
default behaviour.

 - suppose there is a line
 * [EMAIL PROTECTED] 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 my.domain.tab
 in filters.in.tab file, my.domain.tab file exists in filters subdirectory
 and it contains only one command. This command only performs something
like
 logging and always return 0 as return code (but this is not important).

 Now if email arrives for [EMAIL PROTECTED], the command is fired twice. If
 mailproc.tab file is removed for that user, command is fired only once. Is
 this correct? I mean: is it required to fire the command twice?
 Just for your consideration, I'm able to handle this behaviour in my case.

the command is only fired once in the [EMAIL PROTECTED] case. in other cases it
is not fired, because xmail stops processing the the message before it
arrives the filters. the reasen is that xmail does not find a valid account
for the email adress and return Mailbox unavailible. You have to add a new
account in the domain, call it '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' and add a * alias for it:

aliasadd my.domain * log

the log account gets an empty mailproc.tab so that messages that go to it
(in that case all messages to my.domain except [EMAIL PROTECTED]) are deleted.
now you define the filter on [EMAIL PROTECTED] - that should do the job.

 allowed.

write a a small script for filters that copies the spool file (FILE) into

The RDNS does not base on the A entries, it's located in a special RDNS zone
that holds all RDNS entries for a whole subnet. they are called PTR.

if you have a fixed ip you'll have to ask the owner of the subnet to
add/change the PTR record.

hmmm i'll show that with the example:

mail arrives for [EMAIL PROTECTED] (local mailbox), that has redirect
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (local mailbox, too) and mailbox command.

so the mails are forwarded to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and now xmail generates error
messages

The maximum number of delivery attempts has been reached.

and trys to send them to the original sender. because that does not exists,
the error messages get frozen.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] has a mailproc.tab like

mailboxtabnewline - but that should not change something (?).

hmm and a i see in server.tab, RemoveSpoolErrors is set to 1, so why are
there 1700 frozen messages??


i am confused a little bit ...

i'll change [EMAIL PROTECTED] to be an alias for [EMAIL PROTECTED], maybe that
helps.

PS: [EMAIL PROTECTED] has 4500 mails and [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1700 mails.

 At the beginning of the year we had this 3 times, last weekend and last
 night. could that have something todo with the SMAIL threads?

hmmm maybe the problem has something to do with a special mailbox.

one mail box has 1700 mails in it, 7.1 MB

the mailbox had a mailproc.tab with

mailboxtab\n

in it - dunno why.

but i found 1878 frozen messages!

the mails for another mailbox arrive. that has a mailproc redirect to the
special mailbox

and now smail server says

the maximum  has been reached

as a error message - although that mailbox is local and exists !!

(the frozen messages are there because the return path of the original
sender (a perl script from one of our servers) was wrong and the postmaster
error messages got frozen.)

 sorry. the problem encountered this morning, again. i log now the debug
 output.

 there seems to be a hang in smail server, with normal shutdown sequence,
 there is no success, we'll have to do a 'killall XMail'.

 after restart, all queued emails are delivered, and then the problem is
 there again. there is no unnormal entry in the debug log ... just
 smtp/smail/pop3 sessions...

now we deleted all frozmsgs (where about 700mb), we tested xmail without
filtering, we checked dns resolving BUT IT DOES NOT WORK ;-(

we'll have to restart XMail by sendling killall to deliver the emails, and
then there is silence again...

the mails are dropped into mess folder in spool and stay there until a new
restart no entry in slog or in rsnd folder - so there has to be a
strange problem with the smail server 

so we have to restart the server until someone can help us ;-((

we are now restarting the XMail Server every 15mins. as i said, the mails
are accepted but NOT send bei smail server - just after a restart all mails
from the last 14 minutes are send.

now - 12:28am - i have some mails in smaillog, that where accepted by smtp
server at 9am. so xmail took 2.5 hours to send them.

this problem is strange and we don't know what to do. restarting xmail every
15 mins is a workaround, no solution!

yes, i can't see any information in the debug mode ... smail server just
seems to stop working.

 I already had a few crashes when a user tried to send mail to a
 syntactically wrong address eg: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]' (the
 intention was it to send mail to both recipients).

hmmm xmail server worked VERY stable for about 6 months

 Or, if a anti virus program was checking a file written by xmail, and
 xmail was trying to delete, move or modify it at that very moment.

we already moved temporarly moved all filters to test that. the error does
not belong to filters.

 Or, if there is a defective memory module installed, i could imagine the
 system to behave inpredictibly.

system is stable.

 well, that all happened on win32 platform and it's just meant to give
 you more ideas

 I'm not a wizard. Without more detailed informations is like winning the
 lottery.

sorry. the problem encountered this morning, again. i log now the debug
output.

there seems to be a hang in smail server, with normal shutdown sequence,
there is no success, we'll have to do a 'killall XMail'.

after restart, all queued emails are delivered, and then the problem is
there again. there is no unnormal entry in the debug log ... just
smtp/smail/pop3 sessions...

what can i do??

   There's no problem about sending emails now (only that although I have
set -Pl and -Sl, there's nothing in log directory)

did u use XMAIL_CMD_LINE ? that did not wirk for me, i wrote the options
directly after the 'XMail' command. maybe you'll try this

   I've configured Xmail POP3 port to 110 (Xmail -Pp 110) and I've
restarted service.

not neccessary, because 110 ist standard for pop3.

   But if I try to do a telnet xmailserver to port 110 there's no answer.
If I try with my email client I get the next error:

 Failed to get mail from account: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
 WINSOCK Error: Connection refused.  (The requested mail service is not
running on the designated server.  Verify the server name or contact your
System Administrator).
 Connection to socket failed.

that means, the xmail server does not listen on this ip/port combination.
did you bind the pop service to a special ip? normally, xmails services are
listening on all devices/ips.

ok, and now go into -Md mode (debug) - and check whats going wrong.

right, that the big advantage of xmail ;-)

 I checked the users' home directories and they do live
 under an Xmail directory that I cannot recall right
 now.

xmail has just one dir with all data in it. in most cases it's
/var/MailRoot, and the domains and users are organized as directorys in the
dir domains/.

what do you mean with still no mailqueue?

 I can't not find a file named inetd.conf in /etc. Does that mean I have
not inetd installed Redhat and can simply ignore this step, or inetd.conf is
a hiden file?

do: rpm -qa | grep xinetd

if thereis an entry, do: rpm -e xinetd (that will deinstall this sucky
software ;-))

now you can proceed installing xmail.

but i would prefer that xmail server forces smtp auth if the MAIL_FROM and
RCPT are local and the same.

the rcpt accout is local, so you can think we don't need auth, but the
sender is also local, and so there xmail could force auth.

many spammers use that way to send their crap around the world cause almost
every mailserver lets them pass.

i hope you understand me now, otherwise henrik has to tell the problem, his
english is better ;-)

 sorry i do not get this one. the recipient is local, what the heck does it
 mean that the sender is local too. if you want auth even for local
 accounts you've to set mail-auth, but your server won't work on the
 internet.

Yes, maybe it makes no sence that i write a mail from an local account to
exactly the same account, but bad people are using that for spam, because
they don't have to auth.

xmail could force authentication if MAIL_FROM and RCPT are local and the
same. i tested other mail servers, they behave like xmail, too. but i see a
security hole in that behaviour.

PS: Davide, i sent you a testmail over your server from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - maybe you now
understand what i meant ;-)

user will have to user smtp auth to send mails to the internet. mails from

 Setting the MX record to 127.0.0.1 is an illegal operation. It breaks the
 RFC because RFC states that a domain that is mail-enabled ( has MXs ) MUST
 have a postmaster account reachable for such domain. An this won't be
 true if the MX is set to 127.0.0.1

You are 100% right, but i CANNOT control mx records of other nameservers.

So everytime my xmail server tries to send a mail to a domain with 127.0.0.1
mx record, it will generate a mail loop (if 127.0.0.1 is allowed relay
address).


 This method is used to avoid traffic for domains that does not have
 emails, because the RFC dictates that if an MX lookup fails the A record
 must be tried. The simple solution is to have domain name that does not
 have A records, in this way even the A record method will fail and no
 traffic will be generated inside the domain network.

as i said, i have no control over foreign name servers and cannot solve the
problem.

solution could be that xmail allows no mails to servers with 127.0.0.1 mx.

to hide real senders from SMTP protocol.

what i meant is not to hide the senders, just set a Reply-To-Header (to the

Yep, like i said, account resolution happens after filtering :)
You have to put filters even on aliases.

so if i have 2000 aliases for one account (zB webmaster@*), i have to create
2000 files in the filters directory? that is reallybad to handle, isn't it?

and if i have an real account and some aliases for it, for what reason the
filter should not be executed for the aliases, too?

Can you give me a valid reason why should i add another database lookup (
that will take place later ) to fit your case ?

hmm xmail could execute the filter if the mail is at its end:
if no more internal redirects are done and the mail will be dropped in the
pop3-mailbox or redirected to external account.

i guess, then you have no more database lookups as if you first check for
filter tab? and afaik you just have to add a few lines to code (is looked a
little bit in the code, i mean SMAILFilterMessage).

if so, we don't have do add a fake account for every filtered user.

 After having reviewed the code i decided to not implement this feature
 because 1) aliases are meant as other names for local accounts 2) the
 same feature can be achieved by a useradd + usersetmproc with a
 redirect line.

Yupp - i understand how to add external aliases in that way. But ..

a) i have to read out and write the complete mailproc file
(userget/setmproc) - in case of adding/deleting an internal alias, i just
have to do a aliasadd/del - that is easier to handle than letting the
ctrl-client(-program) (in my case my script) doing a complete rewrite of the
file.

b) why should be aliases just be ment for local accounts ?

c) setting/getting the external redirections with aliasadd/aliaslist would
be no new feature, but i guess, that you could implement it easier in ctrl
client programs.

I dont want to nerv you (i think you think something like that :-) ) - but i
think that function would make xmail a bit easier to newbies and easier to
administrate, cause we can control the redirect/aliases with one command.

I am not giving up the hope. :-)

Ehm - not difficult.

a) blah.com is handled locally - so i want to add internal and external
aliases.

example:

domain: blah.com
real user: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

one alias: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] ( no prob with aliasadd)
next alias: externalalias - [EMAIL PROTECTED]

b) so with custdoms all emails to blah.com will be forwarded to external
server, right ?

i dont understand why you have the custdomains if we could write the mail
forwardings to the aliases.tab, too? sorry, but i don see any logic in there
(maybe i am stupid or you guys dont unterstand me :-)) )

Heheh but think of all the AOL-Users (e.g.) in the world (rfc, is that
something to eat??). they *need* user friendly messages (in their
language). And if xmail gives you the possibility to change the messages,
that doesn't mean that you have to do it (but you are able to).

What i mean

 yes, it does...afair it does this after the number of delivery tries
you've
 configured.

i didnt find such a server variable in the server.tab/manual ... can you
help me?
