We have had xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.12.3 in Debian for a while. Just
don't use the oldest Debian release if you want the latest driver...

The ubuntu bug talks about 6.12.2, it might be good to know if 6.12.3
really doesn't work, and then check xserver-xorg-video-ati git master.

[Bug 24722] New: XV corruption

2009-10-25 Thread bugzilla-daemon
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24722

   Summary: XV corruption
   Product: xorg
   Version: 7.4
  Platform: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS/Version: Linux (All)
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: medium
 Component: Driver/Radeon
AssignedTo: xorg-driver-ati@lists.x.org
ReportedBy: anco...@chaoslayer.de
 QAContact: xorg-t...@lists.x.org

Created an attachment (id=30664)
 -- (http://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=30664)
corruptions with XviD codec

For several months now I experience various corruptions using XV. Now I finally
got the time to file a bug here against that because I didn't see a similar
record yet.

Those corruptions seem to happen if I scale a movie double or more. When using
the software scaler all things are fine and on another system (nVidia card with
the nouveau driver) the same movies are scaled correctly and no corruption
appears.

The corruption itself is different from movie to movie. Although the amount and
type of corruption seem to depend on the video codec it may just be some kind
of race condition.

The system setup:
- ATI Radeon X1950XTX (R580)
- Kubuntu 9.04 (kernel 2.6.28)
- radeon driver from xorg-edgers PPA

The corruption can be seen best with kmplayer. Smplayer is the one that seems
to be mostly resistant to those corruptions but at least with Sorenson 3 or
MPEG 4 codec it also shows those corruptions. Also with a lot of codecs
fullscreen in mplayer works fine but when just maximizing the window the
corruptions appear. In the end all video players using XV can be made to
reproduce the corruption.

As my display setup is 2x 1280x1024 CRT's I cannot reproduce those corruptions
with Full-HD content as it cannot be scaled that large and therefore seem to
work fine. Also DVD-playback in one of the displays is fine (again, the frame
is scaled less than 2x the original size).

I am not using KMS.

I've added some screenshots from some of the corruptions.

What might also be worth noting is the fact that if I drag another window into
the video display area the corruptions change a lot. And in some cases the
corruptions only appear when dragging a window inside the playback area and
disappear again if I drag it out.

they now have in Ubuntu 9.10:
 http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/x11/xserver-xorg-video-radeon . As
you can see the version they are working with is
6.12.99+git20090929.7968e1fb-0ubuntu1. I'm using the oldest Debian
release because I don't want my functionality hindered, I posted this
bug as a warning for future releases. If it is absolutely necessary we
test this with Debian, then I will upgrade to Squeeze, but I was kind
of hoping the Ubuntu problems would be enough to take action.

Take action for what? There's nothing specific to do in Debian. Just
work with upstream to get this fixed, and the fix will come in Debian.

Machine hangs when returning from hibernation, as well as when booting,
during starting the X server (switching to graphics mode)

With kernel 2.6.30-1 and 2.6.30-2 this happens *always*

With kernel 2.6.26-2 it only happens often, that means,
after two reboots the system is usable.

What about 2.6.31 or 2.6.32-rc? This looks like a kernel bug to me.

My issue here is very much similar to the issue reported in
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24313

My setup is as follows:

- ATI Radeon HD2400 Pro (1x DVI-I, 1x VGA, 1x HDMI)
- Dell 3007WFP 30 at DVI-0 (2560x1600 @ 60Hz)
- Iiyama Vision Master Pro 510 (22 CRT) at VGA-0 (1600x1200 @ 85Hz)
- Kubuntu 9.04
- no KMS

After upgrading the radeon driver through xorg-edgers PPA (23.10.2009) my
primary display which is the big Dell LCD doesn't come up in KDM. The logs are
all fine. There seems to be no problem.

If I start in cloned mode the secondary display (the CRT) displays fine the
2560x1600 @60 Hz (yes it's a good one, looks a bit odd 16:10 vs. 4:3) but is
usable and behaves as expected. So all things are fine on the VGA-0 connector.

No, actually setting it to '0' results in complete crap being displayed at
whatever scale. When set to '1' the problem is reverted (corruptions in every
scale below 2x - good when double scale or above).
