[Xpert]xkb: half-keyboard?

2002-12-04 Thread Stefan
hi,

i already asked this in march 02, but did not get much of an answer. maybe now
somebody is interested.

i am looking for the capability to mirror the keyboard layout when the space-bar
is pressed, so that one can touch-type with one hand. this is good for blind
people, because they then can have one hand on the braille display, and type
with the other, or for applications where you have the mouse in one hand, and
for many mor occasions.
originally this was marketed as the 'matias half-qwerty' as a hardware solution,
but it should not be too hard to implement it in software (in fact, it was
already done for winDOS and mac).
there already is a kernel patch for this:
http://repetae.net/~john/computer/hk/
but it is faulty. if you do not release the letter key early enough, it swallows
the space char. i know that it would be possible to use it if i disabled xkb,
but this is not feasible in my opinion.
what i am looking for is a function that can be disabled at will, and ideally
would not require recompilation of the kernel or xfree86.
there is also a patch for the x-server:
http://lists.canonical.org/pipermail/kragen-hacks/2002-July/000351.html
but it also seems to be faulty (i did not test it myself).
dan linder, who worked on accessX some time ago, said that possibly this function can
be implemented without coding, by using a specialized xkb keyboard definition or
something.
if anybody has any ideas or knows somebody who is willing to look into this, i
would very much appreciate to hear from them. i am willing to put some time into
this, but need some help to do it. maybe somebody can point me to people working
on xkb?

cheers

stefan

2002-12-04 Thread alex
Hi all,

I am desperately trying to get my Matrox G450 PCI dual head card working

The OS is FreeBSD 4.7 -RELEASE-Alpha (pws 500au).

Using the the supplied mga drivers from XFree86 4.2, X works for the primary
monitor but not the
secondary monitor.

Ok, I thought bec this card has a HD-15 *and* and a DVI connector, that
maybe the drivers from
www.matrox.com/mga would work. So I downloaded the linux drivers, installed
the linux_base port and
moved the drivers to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers. I then restarted X and
no luck:

Can someone out there help.

Absolutely !!! I have three laptops. Two of them (Acers) freeze solid on

run for a short time and then processes start to hang until eventually

Kevin,

Thank you very much for the workaround. It does the trick:

1) Use CTRL-ALT-F1 to go to alternative console mode,
2) Close the lid and open it up again,
3) Use CTRL-ATL-F7 to return to the X window.

Now the question is why we don't have this problem running
Windows XP. Is the problem with the Radeon M7 driver under
XFree86? Or the problem is with BIOS? If it's the later,
I might bug Dell for a fix.

Have a wonderful day.

You could take a look at http://cpbotha.net/dri_resume.html for laptops
with Radeon GPUs.

Note that my patch depends on the laptop switching away to a text VT at
suspend time and switching back at resume time. Most of the current
users use it with acpi and swsusp: with acpi one can easily connect an
event handler to the close lid event that will do the right thing.
Funnily enough, the Dell BIOS usually seems to do the right thing with
suspend to disc... I made this patch for people with newer laptops that
don't support APM anymore instead opting for the more modern ACPI.

[Xpert]Radeon 7500 + Tseng ET6000 dual head lockups

2002-12-04 Thread Matti Airas
Hi,

I have a dual head setup with ATI Radeon 7500 (AGP) and Tseng ET6000
(PCI) cards. Everything (DRI on ATI, v4l on either display) works great
(I'm not using Xinerama, but separate sessions). However, the computer
locks hard from time to time (might be OK for several days, might crash
several times a day). Once it happens, the computer is totally dead.
Alt-SysRq-combinations do not work. On the other hand, if XawTV is on
when the lockup occurs, the TV continues to show (IIRC), so at least the
PCI bus and the display cards seem to survive the crash.

I haven't been able to note any common cause for the crashes. They
happen both when I'm using the computer, and also when it's idling. It
might be that some lockups have occurred when I touch the mouse, but I'm
not sure if that's just a coincidence. Anyway, if I disable the
dual-head setup (by commenting out the Tseng in ServerLayout), the
computer becomes rock-solid, so the crashes are related to XFree86 somehow.

Oh, and I'm using Mandrake 9.0 flavour of XFree86, if that counts.

My config and log files are available at

http://mairas.net/tmp/X11-crashes/XFree86.0.log
http://mairas.net/tmp/X11-crashes/XF86Config-4

I'd appreciate any help or suggestions.

Best Regards,

[Xpert]-fPIC issue

2002-12-04 Thread Egbert Eich
Several times in the past we have seen requests to build libraries
with the -fPIC flag for which XFree86 doesn't supply shared versions.

These requests have always been turned down so far for two reasons:
1. XFree86 wants to discourage anyone from turning the static libraries
   into shared ones.
These libraries are still under development and thus their API
   subject to change.
XFree86 wants to ensure the APIs can still be modified without
having to worry about providing backward compatibility. This
would no longer be possible if the libraries were shared.

2. Position independent code (PIC) performs somewhat lower than
non-PIC. PIC requires one CPU register to hold offset information.
Thus this register is no longer available to the code itself.

Recently I have been approached by the KDE project about this issue again.

1. In order to provide the functionality of these libraries thru the
context of their API KDE fully wraps this libraries' APIs.
Thus any call from a KDE application to these libraries
is done thru functions provided by a shared library of this
   toolkit.
Direct calls of the XFree86 libs are not permitted.
However to do so the XFree86 libraries need to be linked
into the shared libs these projects provide.

2. The ABI of the currently most widely used platform (IA32) does
not require objects to be position independent when being linked
   into shared libraries.
This is not true however for some platforms like IA64, PPC,
   x86-64 or AXP.
To make toolkits like KDE work on these distribution vendors
have added more or less nasty kludges to their XFree86 build
configuration to either create shared versions of all XFree86
libraries or create a PIC version of these.
As most GUI toolkits were developed on IA32 this problem has
never been realized until these toolkits were ported to other
   platforms.

Reviewing these arguments I arrived at the following conclusion:

A. PIC .a libraries themselves are not usable as shared libs.
B. The performance issue matters significantly only on IA32.
All platforms that require PIC objects to build shared
libraries have a sufficiently large number of CPU registers
   that performance penalties are negligible.
C. A fully encapsulated XFree86 library API doesn't place any
more burden on XFree86 to provide any more backward compatibility
   than statically linked libraries.

I therefore propose the following procedure:

A. Identify all XFree86 libraries whose may be encapsulated
by toolkits shared libraries without being shared themselves.
B. Compile libraries identified in 1. with -fPIC on platforms
that require position independent code for shared libraries.
C. Always require a full encapsulation of the API when a static
XFree86 library is added to a shared toolkit library.
   Thus:
a. Toolkit designs that need to expose any part of
   this ABI are considered broken.
b. Applications that reference any part of this ABI
bypassing the toolkit are considered broken.

I would like to get feedback from the community on this.

After talking this over with David I have implemented and committed
it to the XFree86 CVS. However David suggested to discuss this
in public.
Should any serious objections arise We can still modify/remove it
before 4.3 comes out.

Egbert.

[Xpert]External Monitor on Trident CyberBladeXP (HP Pavilion n5415)

2002-12-04 Thread Julian L. Hunter
Hello,

I have asked part of this question before and tried all the
feedback, but still no luck. All I want to do is have the display a) on
the LCD or b) on the external monitor on my desk. Seems simple enough
right? Well after many weeks of frustration and despair, I am still at
square one. I have tried the fn-f5 combination (which is what works
under Windows), no luck. So then I tried the Display Option CRT, and
this causes the LCD not to show the picture but does not display it on
the CRT (so no diaply at all). I followed this by BIOS another option
I found somewhere on the web, still no luck. So I have a few questions,

   1) Is this possible with the current Trident driver (I took the one
from http://xfree86.org/~alanh on Dec 1, 2002)? If so, how would I go
about this?

   2) The key codes do not show up anywhere (the fn-f5 ones), how
do these normally work on other laptops, are they intercepted by the BIOS
and then processed or shoudl they generate key codes?

   3) Is there a list of TODO's for the trident driver?

   4) Finally, Has anyone on thsi list gotten this working?

If I ama asking these questions in the wrong place please let me know.

Anxiously waiting,
JLH.
