thanks for your response, adam i'll try the winishhofer driver... meesh -- From: Adam Goode[SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, December 29, 2002 9:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:[Xpert]V_BIOS woes I have an SS50 mini PC from Shuttle, and it has on board SiS 6325 AGP video, as well as a Radeon 7500 PCI which I added. There are 2 versions of XFree86 which I've tried: 4.2.1-4 from Debian, and CVS HEAD. The only change I have made to the Debian version is adding the sis driver from Thomas Winischhofer http://www.winischhofer.net/sis/sis_drv.o_4.2.1_261102-1.tar.gz to get the sis card recognized. I've tried the HEAD version as is, downloaded yesterday. I am trying to get Xinerama to work, which it almost does, but then crashes. There are 2x2 configurations I'm using. One dimension is setting in my BIOS setup which video card is initialized as primary: ATI or SiS. The other dimension is the XFree86 version: Debian or HEAD. The only configuration which initializes all the cards and displays a picture across both of them is Debian-SiSPrimary. That is, I set the BIOS to initalize the SiS card first, and rtun the 4.2.1-4 Debian version. Unfortunately, this crashes very soon after I login and start to move windows between the two screens. In the other 3 configurations, I get trouble with not finding V_BIOS and the non-primary card doesn't get initalized at all. A quick table: Version PrimaryResult - HEAD SiSSiS works, ATI driver can't find V_BIOS or init the card HEAD ATIATI works, SiS driver can't find V_BIOS or init the card 4.2.1-4 SiSBoth cards work, int10 finds both V_BIOSes 4.2.1-4 ATIATI works, SiS driver can't find V_BIOS or init the card I'm sure something odd is happening deep with int10, and something between 4.2.1.1 and HEAD has broken at least some previously working configurations. I'm attaching lspci -vvv for both configurations, with ATI as primary card and SiS as primary card. I'm also attaching all 4 XFree86 logs for the configurations in the table above. It would be nice to get int10 working to find V_BIOS in all situations. Any help would be appreciated, and I'll be happy to do anything necessary to provide information to smart int10/pci hackers. I would recommend getting a more recent Linux rather than attempting to use an ancient version of RedHat. RH5.2 shipped with XFree86 3.3.2.3, which has absolutely no support for the SiS620 (the support appeared sometime before 3.3.6). At best, you'd have to download RPMs for a more recent XFree86; at worst, you'd be recompiling XFree86. Even RedHat 6.x should be able to support the SiS 620. -andy ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

I would suggest that you don't use X 3.3, it's too old. You won't get good support for it, and 4.x is a considerable improvement anyway. In any case, the Trio3D cards (and specifically the Trio3D/2X) is supported by the s3virge driver in 4.2.1 according to: http://www.xfree86.org/current/Status28.html#28 and provide accelerated support. Your original problem just sounds like a issue with setting up the XF86Config file, or using the VGA driver. 'xf86config' does a better job than writing the config file from scratch free-form, but I've usually found it necessary to edit it afterwards for best results. Sometimes, it's even necessary to lie in this file to get it to work (laptops, usually). Try re-installing XFree86 4.2 (I'd suggest not installing it as a package, but instead building it from source via the 'ports' mechanism if you have a reasonably fast machine - this way you can update it later most conveniently) and running XFree86 -configure (you'll need to be root). The config file this generated should be a good start, and you can edit it to fix things like keyboard maps, mouse settings (if you're using 'moused', make sure you use Proto 'Auto' and specify '/dev/sysmouse' as the mouse device), and the monitor refresh ranges etc. When you think it's close, run it and see. If it blows up and doesn't work at all, then the logged output of the X server would be a good thing to provide to the list for more detailed help. If you don't get the expected resolution, then you should be able to figure out why (hopefully ;-) from looking at the X server output, and address it in the XF86Config file. Once it's close, you can use 'xvidtune' to generate a custom modeline for your card/monitor if you need to. HTH. [Xpert]Locale warnings and messed up interfaces
Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight into fixing my locale problem. Whenever I load a program (such as xfontsel, xman, etc), I get locale warnings such as: Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C Warning: X locale modifiers not supported, using default Warning: app-defaults file not properly installed. Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset When I was running X 4.2.1 there were no problems, but then I upgraded to fontconfig (using Xrender, Xft2, and fontconfig from cvs), and I started getting these Warnings. Along with the warnings, the programs that give them have their interface all messed up. xfontsel has its menu titles replaced by fieldn (for 0 <= n <= 13), and no text is rendered. In other programs I get similar errors. Programs and libs that dont use xlib (gtk+/pango) all work without problems, so I have no idea what to do. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. [Xpert]fullscreen xawtv and tearing...
Hello folks, I was hoping someone could help me out. I have two computers, one with a single proc P4 on an i845 motherboard, and one with dual proc P3s on a VIA motherboard. Both have similar Radeon 8500s in them, and both have bt848 cards. On the i845 system, if I go fullscreen with xawtv, the picture is nice, crisp, and clear. On the VIA system, if I go full screen with xawtv, the entire right side of the picture starts to tear. Anyone know what would be causing this problem and how it can be fixed? I have read in the Handbook that the new version of X (4.x) doesn't have as meny grapical adatpers supported as the old version (3.x). Then, I have installed FreeBSD without X and tried to install it(X server 3.3.6.9 ) from the 3rd CD with pkg_add, but I get the error msg that pkg_add can't find package stats or smth.
