You can try X -configure after installing X4.2. If it still doesn't work,
send your log file.

Thanks for responding. I've gone through the steps of installing the
4.2 binaries and running the xf86cfg. One issue is that 4.2 source files
may have been installed, and other files installed - which prevents startx
 from
working. The configuration program works, but xwindows will not start. Do
 you
suggest doing a fresh install of redhat 7.1, then the 4.2 binaries and
 xf86cfg ?
or any other suggestions/steps to have this work? The system purchased is

Hi,

I have a Dell OEM ATI Radeon VE with a DVI interface on it. There is _not_
a

card) that goes from the one DVI connector to two (2) VGA connectors. I
would like to connect a monitor to each of these VGA connectors, and run
Xinerama to span an X Desktop across both of them .

But before I do that, I was wondering...is it possible to configure X in
this way? Currently, I can only get the first monitor (the first interface)
to work. Is there something I can do make the X talk to BOTH monitors?
I'm running:

Linux: Slackware 8.0
Kernel: 2.4.18
XFree86: 4.2

If there currently isn't a way of doing this, is there a plan to add this
support to X in the future?

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE QY rev 0 dual head support?

2002-04-12 Thread jp_XFree86

I have a Dell Precision 530 with an ATI Radeon VE QY rev 0 video
card.

With a dual head setup, the first monitor works fine, and
Xinerama is happy (I'm seeing the first half of the screen).
However, the second monitor is not getting sync.

I've included 3 files:
XFreeConfig.new is the exact file produced by XFree86 -configure
It doesn't seem to recognize that I have two video ports

XF86Config-4.dual is my config file that almost works

XFree86.0.log.dual is the log output from the almost-working
config file.

I'm willing to test changes, etc. get this working. I have 4.2.0
installed now, but I can upgrade to beta or alpha code if I need
to.

Thanx,
John Price

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE has stipple problems in XFree86 4.2.0

2002-04-12 Thread Andrew P. Lentvorski

I set up a VLSI layout tool with XFree86 4.2.0 on a FreeBSD 4.5 box.
However, the stipple renderer is having problems.

The symptom is that polygons filled with a stipple pattern sometimes show
up as filled with solid black. Note I said sometimes. It's a Heisenbug
and is particularly difficult to reproduce. I wrote a simple X app to try
to nail down the bug, but it doesn't tickle it. It appears to need a wide
variety of shapes and sizes of stipple filled polygons to hit the code.
I would suspect a pixmap cacheing bug of some flavor.

I *do* know that it is an X error because I set the NoAccel option and all
the stipples worked perfectly (if slowly).

I can send any configuration or logfile output as required.

Thanks,
Andy L.

Re: [Xpert]ATI Radeon VE has stipple problems in XFree86 4.2.0

2002-04-12 Thread Andrew P. Lentvorski

Urk, I had forgotten about this message that had been sent to XFree86
before I subscribed. The moderator must have kicked it loose.

Please see my earlier post. The problem is an interaction between a
clipped polygon filled with a stipple pattern and the pixmap cache.
(Pretty obscure huh? ;) ) The problem goes away if you disable the pixmap
cache in xaa. For my particular card, the DRI stuff is disabled since I
have no /dev/dri entries.

I get:

(II) RADEON(0): [drm] drmOpen failed
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] DRIScreenInit failed. Disabling DRI.

Okay, understood.

AFAIK, DELL has cards with two DVI-D outputs and with two VGA outputs (all

Yep, that's what I am seeing, I'm getting a blank screen on the 2nd CRT

DPMS may not be implemented for flat panels, but something seems to be.

I use a laptop with an ATI Radeon Mobility graphics adapter, with the
internal flat panel and an external monitor set up to run simultaneously
with Xinerama. I noticed in the last day or two that when the external
monitor went into power-savin mode, within seconds, the internal flat
panel also went blank and its backlight shut off.

Can you explain this a little more further ?

Do you mean that the OEM chip isn't supported by the XFree driver ?

log file as well as my entire XF86Config.

I will feely muchly indebted if someone can help me with this!

I am, BTW running a genuine ATI card. Came in an ATI retail box, even.

Have you put Screen 0 and Screen 1 in your SeverLayout section? If yes,
post
 your log file.
x420 supports VE dual-head setup. However if you are using some OEM
version
of VE card (like DELL's) you might be out of luck.

After hours of net searching, I've been unable to find any information
 about

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE dual-head problems

2002-03-11 Thread Popescu, Razvan

I've been trying to configure a dual-head system using ATI Radeon VE on
Linux RedHat 7.2, Xfree86 4.1.0 (as it comes in RH7.2). The card is the Dell
version of Radeon VE, which doesn't have two connectors on it, but a larger
one, from which a Y cable can adapt to a pair of analog or digital style
connectors.

The default RH installation recognizes properly the hardware and a single
display configuration works just fine (DRI included). However all attempts
to configure a dual-head system yielded only the right half of the desktop
onto the left monitor and *no signal* on the secondary (right) monitor.
Xfree86 4.2.0 installed from binaries didn't improve the situation.

Interesting fact: the DDC retrieved info shows two different monitor serial
numbers as the video card successfully communicated with both monitors!

Did anybody use this card for a dual-head system?

Thanks,
Razvan

(I could list the config. file and logs if necessary)

can be resolved in the near future.

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE and DRI

2002-02-07 Thread Armin Lambacher

Hello again,

now that my mplayer works as expected, thanks to the advice of
Vladimir Dergachev, I tried to have a look at the low framerates of
glxgears.

If I ask glxinfo, it tells me:

name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes

But if I have a look at my /var/log/XFree86.0.log, somewhere near the
end it tells me

(II) RADEON(0): Largest offscreen area available: 1296 x 5444
(II) RADEON(0): Reinitializing Xvideo subsystems

This seems strange to me. Some lines above the previous ones, I find

unresolved!
Symbol __glXActiveScreens from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libdri.a is

I must admit that I do not know what the reason is for this. I use
SUSE 7.3 with the Xfree86 4.2.0 from their homepage and the gatos
drivers from sourceforge (which solved the problem of always visible
TV overlay...)

I assume that the above given information may not be enough, so at the
end I included my whole /var/log/XFree86.0.log.

Can anybody tell me what I should do?

Thanks a lot

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE - ATI Radeon 7500 or Matrox G400?

2002-02-04 Thread Armin Lambacher

Hello,

I just switched from a Matrox G400 to an ATI Radeon VE because the
later one has a DVI Connector. System is SuSE Linux 7.3 with the
XFree86 version 4.2.0 from the SuSE update server. After following the
install instructions the card runs. However, there are some issues
comparing it to the former G400

- gears seems to be slow. With the matrox card I got frame rates of
about 450 frames per second with the initial Window size. With the
Radeon VE I get about 175 frames per second.
(glxinfo tells me: direct rendering: Yes )

- When I use mplayer to play a video and use -vo xv the video stays
visual if I switch to another desktop. This was not the case with
the matrox card and is very annoying.

My main concern is the second point. I do not use the 3D acceleration
at the moment, but every now and then want to have a look at a movie
in spare time. I'd like to pause the video, switch to another desktop,
do something there and switch back and continue watching the
video. Would this be possible with the radeon driver?

And, can I use the TV-out with the Radeon 7500?

Thanks a lot

This is a known bug, fixed in gatos drivers.

This code is very experimental.. and was not tested with your card in
specifically.. See http://gatos.sf.net/ - Watching TV

[Xpert]ATI Radeon VE and xinerama

2002-01-14 Thread Niclas Sodergard

Hi everybody,

I have a ATI Radeon VE and I am trying to get xinerama to work with
that. It seems to configure both screens but the second screen remains
black. It doesn't matter which way I connect them. The second screen
seems to get some kind of signal since the No signal-banner disappers
when I start X.

I am running RedHat 7.2 both with XFree-4.1.0 and XFree-4.1.99. Same
result on both.

I have included my XF86Config-4 and the log file produced as
attachments.

I would really appreciate some help since my head is already bleeding
from too much contact with the wall.

Cheers,
Nickus

Have you tried specifying 'Option CrtScreen' for the second-head

option. (FYI, I don't have a laptop with a Radeon, so I don't know if this
does anything. Might work, might do nothing, might induce meltdown. :)

 3. There is some ocassional what I guess would be called static. The
Multilink requires a vertical and horizontal refresh of 60 HZ and the
radeon doesn't seem to quite do that. It insists on 63.36 according to
 the multilink.

60 Hz both vertically and horizontally is obviously impossible so I
assume it's 63.36 kHz horizontally? That would be quite reasonable for
1024 lines at 60 Hz.

I had notice the same thing int he ATI driver. On my laptop, Windows can
completely shutdown the LCD screen, but under X, it doesn't. It seems
perfectly reasonable for DPMS to also apply to LCDs, though the actual
energy savings might be less.

Re: [Xpert]ATI Radeon VE and digital output

2001-12-14 Thread Ed Hudson

Most graphics cards, the radeon / ve included, seem to re-read
the monitors 'eedid' information only on power up. for me,
this only works reliably if i have just the dvi cable plugged
into the monitor, not the analog cable, and reboot...

-elh

Actually, I'm using an SGI 1600SW LCD with my Radeon VE right now, all
digital. I never had to change a thing when I switched from VGA to DVI,
XFree just picked the correct resolution automagically.

 I'm running XFree86 4.1 from RedHat 7.2.

DVI-I can handle analog and digital, so there must be some sort of
handshake to determine which mode to use. Perhaps there is a setting
that can be changed on your monitor?

I was able to glean from the driver that's currently in CVS that the

How does the card tell whether it is connected to an LCD or a CRT?

[Xpert]ati radeon ve dvi / 6bit dac ?

2001-12-07 Thread Ed Hudson

howdy.

i'm using the head of the cvs source tree's version
of the radeon driver. the analog port uses 8-bit dacs,
but the dvi port only outputs data in 6-bit mode,
ir-respective of settings. i suspect this is a bug
in the driver.

under dimdoz, with the official ati radeon driver,
i get all bits, so its not a hardware limitation.
any help would be appreciated.

further, i can drive both an analog and digital
monitor simulatneously, and see that the digital
is only in 6-bit mode under XFree86, while the
analog port is indeed in 8-bit mode (24-bit depth
invocation of XFree86)

thanks,
