Well, if KDE didn't get started after upgrading to 4.2.0, *which* sort of graphical environment / desktop manager did you see while running startx? Tried to place something, like, "exec startkde" into your $HOME/.xinitrc file, or do you rely on some graphical login like [g|k]dm? > Beyond that, what light can anyone shed on getting KDE (or icewm) to run > with XFree 4.2.0? >From the "building-from-sources" - point of view: Did that with KDE, several times, and haven't seen any problems so far. If you care for an answer you ought to be more precise. Maybe noone has understood your explanation, therefore you did not receive an answer.
