[xubuntu-users] weird xscreensaver-command doings

2017-06-25 Thread JMZ

Hi,

Usually my favorite screen-blanking routine is this: cancel out all
screensavers in xscreensaver-demo, and then issue xscreensaver-command
-lock every time I want a locked screen (have Super+L as the hotkey for
this).

In the past screensaver-command -lock would create a blank screen that
would remain blank until spacebar etc. is struck and the lock dialog box
appears. Now, the lock dialog box is stuck in a viscous circle with
PAM. The lock dialog box always stays "awake" and on-screen until it
times out. Then PAM takes over, box appears, ad infinitum. The screen
never returns to a state when the screen remains black until a key is
struck. Having the lock dialog box and PAM chase each other is distracting.

How do I get back to a previous stage where the lock dialog box only
appears when a key is struck? Am I going the wrong way with my use of
xscreensaver-command?

I'm running Aardvark pre-alpha. If this is an early bug, I deserve
running an ultra-unstable version of ubuntu.

Thanks,

Jordan

John,

I know you asked for a gui text viewer solution, but nevertheless try
the 'less' command is in the terminal. It's a lot simpler than
downloading something from a repository. Just type 'less '.
less will stop page-by-page. You can also use your cursor keys to move
up and down. just type 'q' to leave.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Strange improper behavior on my Xubuntu 16.04 laptop

2017-01-26 Thread JMZ
Check to see what video the laptop uses. If you can find out the name
and version of the video chipset, install the proper driver. Always
check the repositories first to see if a driver is there. Often an older
version of a driver still exists in repository. Sometimes there's a bit

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi VIctor,

Try combining sensors with the watch command (-n 2 is usually enough
time resolution). That way, when the fans act up, you'll have real-time
temp feedback. I don't know what the "appropriate file" is, but a
real-time two second delay information might help you pinpoint the problem.

Re: [xubuntu-users] xubuntu-users Digest, Vol 120, Issue 29

2017-01-21 Thread JMZ
I agree Peter that even for people running ubuntu flavors on super-fast
gamer boxes, it's good to try to economize on applications. However,
suggesting that new users use the command line interface (cli) as an
economization measure might not often be wise. Many people, especially
"millennials", may never have seen a command prompt before. Many linux
users take cli for granted, given our familiarity with past computing
systems completely run by text command. New users often need gui
front-ends to compensate. Who can blame many new users given their sole
experience with highly graphical environments?

This is why I'd say it's better for a new ubuntu user to over-equip
their systems with RAM. gui counterparts of commands should be as easy
and quick as possible.

[xubuntu-users] Repository driver for nvidia laptop card NVS3100M?

2016-12-28 Thread JMZ

Hi,

Would anyone know if the repositories contain a driver for the nvidia
NVS3100M laptop video card? The box is a Lenovo T510 (built 2010 but
bought a week ago; old refurbished boxen are fine for my needs.) For
some reason the laptop is iffy with xscreensaver. Sometimes it works
fine, and other times it causes video distortion (screen blank, not
refreshing). Not a hardware problem, as the laptop works just fine with
xscreensaver disabled. Maybe fitting the right driver might help. Bug

There are some ppa's out there for nvidia drivers, but the laptop at
hand is far too old for anything an experimental ppa would burp up.

Hi Chris,

I noticed that your thumb drive mounts to /dev/sdb. What is /dev/sda?
The internal drive? If that's the case, try using your bootup menu to
boot only from the thumb drive. This can be done by excluding all other
possible bootup media _except_ the thumb drive. Then see if you get a
clean mount and xubuntu startup appears.

If not, try the same method, but now with the DVD drive only.

Hi Harold,

Maybe you should consider a complete switch over to Ubuntu instead of
running MacOS/Ubuntu dual boot. I'd understand if you'd be hesitant to
make a full jump into Ubuntu if this is your only computer. If you can
experiment on this computer without losing important data, try running
one of the Ubuntu flavors only. Firefox for Linux is up-to-date with
every coding language. You'll probably find that LibreOffice in Ubuntu
runs faster than old versions of MS Office in MacOS.

Some will direct you towards Lubuntu, the LXDE flavor of Ubuntu. LXDE
requires a lot of terminal use (many functions aren't accessible through
the GUI). Maybe it'd be better to stay with xubuntu while learning
about Linux.

I've always wanted to run a PPC with an Ubuntu flavor, so perhaps I'm

Re: [xubuntu-users] Funny problem with VLC

2016-06-16 Thread JMZ

Hi Jeffrey,

When a media source is plugged into ubuntu linux, the drive is
auto-mounted to /media. This might not be a good place for your
external drive to end up. See if remounting the drive somewhere else
allows you to access your external drive.

1) Close VLC and open a terminal window.

2) type 'lsblk'. (I don't think you will need sudo, but throw a sudo
in there if needed.) This will give you a tree diagram of your mounted
drives, drive data capacities, and /dev assignments. This should help
you track down where your external drive is in the /dev hierarchy.

3) find and write down the /dev assignment for your external drive.

4) Y'know what, leave /media as it is. The external drive can be
mounted at two places at once.

5) Create some directory for the /dev to point to. You will need to use
'sudo mkdir' off the root, should you wish to create a directory one
layer off root (your call).

6) mount the external drive like this:

--> (6a) 'sudo mount /dev/[/dev drive assignment] /[name of target
directory], where [/dev drive assignment] is a code such as sda1, sdb2
etc. [name of target directory] refers to the directory you have just
created as a destination for the external drive

Now try accessing your media files off the external drive with VLC,
drawing data from the target directory.

Good luck and Happy Motoring,
Jordan

[xubuntu-users] changing ownership on thumb drive

2016-05-13 Thread JMZ

Hi,

I'm having some weird issues with thumb drive ownership. Steps:

1) 'sudo blkid' to call up the thumb drive assignment

2) 'sudo mount /dev/sd* /thumb' [where /dev/sd* is the drive assignment,
and /thumb a directory off of the root]

---> 2a) [NB: /thumb is owned by the local account (here, 'blah')
__before__ the mount command. Afterwards, the mounted thumb drive is
owned by 'root' and can't be changed]

3) 'sudo touch /thumb' [for some reason, I get the default DEC 31 1969
when I mount the thumb drive]

but, when I type

'sudo chown -R blah:blah /thumb', [where 'blah' is the local account], I
get

'chown: changing ownership of '/thumb': Operation not permitted'

***

The chown switches -R or --recursive do not work. [there are
subdirectories on the thumb drive, and I would like all subdirectories
to be changed to 'blah' ownership]

I suspect that the system's assignment of a wrong date/time to the drive
might block the ownership change even after 'touch'. Is 'touch'
counterproductive?

I have disabled automounting of thumb drives or indeed anything not in
fstab [ie. hard drive]. I have removed the /media directory.

Any ideas? Thanks,

The most difficult selling point for any linux flavor is the dreaded "do

Re: [xubuntu-users] Why no default mount?

2016-05-06 Thread JMZ
I prefer that Linux _not_ mount my non-fstab drives automatically. Often
I run a mix of file systems (ie ext4 magnetic media and vfat thumb
drives) in one session. I'd rather that Linux "ignores" the vfat thumb
drives until I can mount them to file directories I'd prefer. A lot of
this has to do with my use of the thumb drives on semi-secured public
terminal systems. The terminals are Windows, so I have no choice other
than use vfat media and be careful. It would be probably be best to
partition a drive with a dedicated partition for a non-Linux file
system, or set aside an entire drive devoted to a non-Linux file
system. I have some desktops salted away for later use. Perhaps if
ubuntu is on to a new nine-month release by then, I'll investigate new
partition or drive format options.

[xubuntu-users] OT: better bootable thumb drive creator than unetbootin?

2016-04-30 Thread JMZ

Hi,

Okay OT but someone here must know. I've never been able to create a
bootable thumb drive from iso using unetbootin. Specifically, I need to
make a dban thumb drive to wipe a netbook (no cd drive). unetbootin
gives me a menu of scripts on bootup. This menu is useless. Seems that
a lot of the thumb drive creation software is written as windows
software for windows users who want to create a bootable linux distro
iso. That doesn't help me. Better ideas?

Thanks
Jordan

[xubuntu-users] canonical-kernel-team and 16.04 xenial?

2016-03-19 Thread JMZ

Hi,

For several years I have been using the canonical-kernel-team ppa to
update my kernels faster than usual.

https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

It appears that this ppa isn't ready for xenial, or at least a
development version. The repositories reject the ppa apt-get, and the
key doesn't work. A downgrade to wily is not working either. Is there a
newer/better kernel development ppa which covers xenial? Rather, must I
wait and see if or when the canonical-kernel-team ppa comes around to a
xenial ppa (probably when the final release is made public)?
