In addition to 'du', there is ncurses-based 'ncdu' for a prettier
output.

There is a graphical tool called Baobab.  You can find it in the menu under
Disk Usage Analyzer.  Exactly as you describe.

You probably look for apt-get install k4dirstat. A must have in my opinion.

I wouldn't use Xfce with the Qt based app k4dirstat, it might be
better to use baobab and much better to use mate-disk-usage-analyzer.

It's part of the package mate-utils and mate-disk-usage-analyzer quasi
is a GTK2 version of baobab and other than baobab, it still provides a
menu bar, so you quasi get baobab, but it fits better to Xfce.

I have tried baobab.  I don't understand the 'ring' graph and the tree 
graph option is totally beyond me.  Part of the problem is in both 
graphs, the colors or shapes are not identified, leaving me to go 
between a directory listing and the chart.  Too much use of the wrong 
cpu.  ncdu is better.  I was just hoping for something more like hog.  I 
just looked inside hog.exe and found the author's name.  I duckduckgoed 
him and found him "Jay Wherley".  I dropped him a note re: Linux.  I saw 
in his site that he wrote a newer version of it for windows.


I saw k4dirstat that someone mentioned.  The png looks good. Assuming 
that is a KDE program, when I switch from Suse to Ubuntu when Ubuntu 
first came out, I decided to not run KDE programs on Ubuntu, as there 
seem to be a lot of dependencies.  Mate looks interesting.

It's an interactive map of directories with root (/) at the middle.
Hover over a segment and its name pops up, followed by its children.
You can see at a glance what your biggest directories are.
Click on a segment and it zooms in on it.

The colours are just picked for contrast; identity is done by hovering.

Give it another try.

Speaking for the Mate equivalent, there's a difference between a click
and a right click zoom.

Again speaking for the Mate equivalent, same as for the circle graph,
just vice versa, IOW from outside to inside.

Again speaking for the Mate equivalent, the colours are for
contrast, but also represent the size, at least within a tree (not in
comparison with another tree).

I suspect that the Mate thingy and baobab are more or less equal.

I'm neither a user of those GUI tools, nor did I read the manual, but
the help menu of the Mate thingy at least provides a manual. Shortcut
F1, maybe baobab provides help/a manual by F1 too.
