RE: [Zappa-List] Who do you really think will win? Gamble on the election?

2004-10-31 Thread Danny ODare

I think the answer is alluded to in the subject headline - "Who do you really think will win? Gamble on the election?". We all know that Gore (shit-bag, reactionary, etc, that he is) really won the election, yet the US people still ended up with Bush!!
If you want know who the winner is going to be, you better start phoning up the lawyers and Supreme Court members ...

Bush or Democratic presidential nominee John F. Kerry can earn the 270 electoral votes to be elected president, then the U.S. House of Representatives would be called on to choose the winner. The 12th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was ratified in 1804 in response to the 1801 presidential election when Thomas Jefferson failed to receive an electoral majority, gives the House the responsibility of choosing the president, while the U.S. Senate picks the vice president.Only two times in U.S. history has this happened. The House chose John Quincy Adams instead of Andrew Jackson in 1825 because several third-party candidates sifted electoral
votes away from them. In 1837, the Senate was asked to choose the vice president after a disputed race before the time that political parties ran on the same ticket. While this scenario is certainly not probable, it is quite possible considering the closeness of the candidates this year. The new president and vice president would be chosen by a joint session of the House and Senate on January 6, 2005 when they officially count the electoral votes for each candidate. If neither candidate receives 270 votes, then Bush would likely be reelected since control of the House is solidly with Republicans. Each of the fifty states receives one vote as prescribed by the 12th Amendment and Republicans have a majority delegation in 30 of those states.Yet, the only way this procedure would be needed is if the Electoral College is split 269-269 if an elector switches their vote or abstains. A Republican West Virginia elector
has already vowed to switch his vote if Bush wins his state.Additionally, Colorado's ballot initiative that would split that state's electoral votes rather than the usual winner-take-all for the winner of the popular vote could play a role in making the presidential race tighter than expected. Finally, if the Democrats regain control of the U.S. Senate in next week's elections, then they would probably choose Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards to join Bush in the executive branch._Check out Election 2004 for up-to-date election news, plus voter tools and more! http://special.msn.com/msn/election2004.armxFor further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you.

Yes, I think I've seen the PKD documentary - such a programme was broadcast on the BBC some years ago, and I presume it was the same. But, if you happen to have a copy ...

Danny,

Have you seen the PKD documentary? It's fairly redundant if you've read the biography "Divine Invasions" but the interviews with those who knew him were worth seeing.

Seems to be the case that more often than not, it's the artists who reflect back accurately what a given culture or society is doing, and where it's at in its development.
Frank wrote about a secret underground base in "Thingfish" and lo and behold later it was revealed that it wasn't just a product of his imagination. Not to mention he saw compact discs and music downloading twenty years before this arrived.

Darrell

Yep! I can relate to that. I recently read again (after about a 15 year absence!!), "The Simulacra" and I was quite astonished/knocked-back by its insights/prescience. And, yes, "Radio Free Albemouth" is a great novel, especialy as - IF I recall correctly - PKD 'assimilates' his experince of being monitored/investigated by the 'dark forces' of the FBI/CIA. PKD, in the lates 1960s, attended a few meetings of the Communist Party of the United States of America, which was enjoying a mini-renaissance under the 'fire' of people like Angela Davies (especally in California, PKD's base). He eventually 'drifted' away, but was classified as a Communist Party sympathiser/'fellow-traveller, and 'monitored' day and night' by YOU-KNOW-WHO. At one stage, it was fairly clear that PKD's phone was being TAPPED by the FBI/CIA, but almost everybody - understandably in some ways, given his drugs-intake - dismissed him for being 'paranoid'. We now know, of course, and
it has been since 'officially' confessed, that his phone WAS tapped by the FBI/CIA, and his apartment WAS broken into, and burgled, by FBI/CIA shits looking for 'subversive/communist' material.

Meanwhile, back in Florida ...

That's where a lot of them originate.
Some are being snail mailed around in vines weeds and trades as well. Several of
us are easytree users and some are not. Most of the vines are in Audio CD format
even though it might have originated as flac or shn files. Some people just
don't want to deal with flac or shn files. Certainly if you have a high speed
connection there is a huge amount of FZ shows available at easytree.
Occasionally we get a vine around here that's not been on easytree as well.

is this just the way it is? or did I do something wrong??? can anyone
tell me, or would anyone be willing to trade me a DVD that works?

Kind Regards

Re: [Zappa-List] Q about the Halloween '81 DVD

2004-10-31 Thread Jim L

Doesn't sound right to me Carsten. I
had hit and miss luck burning them that way. I finally broke down and invested
in some software to burn video DVDs. Actually with a pre authored VIDEO_TS
folder The software I use just utilizes the DVD copy portion of the program but
I guess it still burns it as a video DVD. You could try this version of "Burn At
Once" that has a video DVD burning segment built in. It worked well for me with
a VIDEO_TS folder but it was discontinued in the newer version because it wasn't
compatible with all drives. Works best with Windows 2000 or XP.
http://www.whynotdesignz.com/free/bao099b.exe
It's even free software.

Subject: Republican View of Bush Administration

Look what we are up against fellow Republicans what are we going to do. It looks like Kerry is going to win.

Charlie Reese writes for the Orlando Sentinel. He's a Conservative Republican who is anti-abortion, anti-tax-and-spend, loudly critical of legislation by the judiciary, doesn't think much of ulticulturalism or secularism, has suggested Clinton "turned the Oval Office into a whorehouse," thinks Ronald Reagan is the greatest thing to come down the pike since canned beer, and voted for Bush in the last election. So, take a look at his article which follows.

Carrol C. Marks
801 International Parkway  Suite 5
Orlando FL 32746
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Vote For A Man, Not A Puppet
Orlando Sentinel
Charlie Reese

Americans should realize that if they vote for President Bush's re-election, they are really voting for the architects of war - Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz and the rest of that cabal of neoconservative ideologues and their corporate backers. I have sadly come to the conclusion that President Bush is merely a front man, an empty suit, who is manipulated by the people in his administration. Bush has the most dangerously simplistic view of the world of any president in my memory.

It's no wonder the president avoids press conferences like the plague. Take away his cue cards and he can barely talk. Americans should be embarrassed that an Arab King (Abdullah of Jordan) spoke more fluently and articulately in English than our own President at their joint press conference recently.

John Kerry is at least an educated man, well-read, who knows how to think and who knows that the world is a great deal more complex than Bush's comic-book world of American heroes and foreign evildoers. It's unfortunate that in our poorly educated country, Kerry's very intelligence and refusal to adopt simplistic slogans might doom his presidential election efforts.

But Thomas Jefferson said it well, as he did so often, when he observed that people who expect to be ignorant and free expect what never was and never will be.

People who think of themselves as conservatives will really display their stupidity, as I did in the last election, by voting for Bush. Bush is as far from being a conservative as you can get. Well, he fooled me once, but he won't fool me twice.

It is not at all conservative to balloon government spending, to vastly increase the power of government, to show contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law, or to tell people that foreign outsourcing of American jobs is good for them, that giant fiscal and trade deficits don't matter, and that people should not know what their government is doing. Bush is the most prone-to-classify, the most secretive president in the 20th century. His administration leans dangerously toward the authoritarian.

It's no wonder that the Justice Department has convicted a few Arab-Americans of supporting terrorism. What would you do if you found yourself arrested and a federal prosecutor whispers in your ear that either you can plea-bargain this or the President will designate you an enemy combatant and you'll be held incommunicado for the duration ?

This election really is important, not only for domestic reasons, but because Bush's foreign policy has been a dangerous disaster. He's almost restarted the Cold War with Russia and the nuclear arms race. America is not only hated in the Middle East, but it has few friends anywhere in the world thanks to the arrogance and ineptness of the Bush administration.

Don't forget, a scientific poll of Europeans found us, Israel, North Korea and Iran as the greatest threats to world peace.

I will swallow a lot of petty policy differences with Kerry to get a man in the White House with brains enough not to blow up the world and us with it.

Go to Kerry's Web site (http://johnkerry.com ) and read some of the magazine profiles on him. You'll find that there is a great deal more to Kerry than the GOP attack dogs would have you believe.

Besides, it would be fun to have a president who plays hockey, windsurfs, ride motorcycles, plays the guitar, writes poetry and speaks French. And . . it would be good to have a man in the White House who has killed people face to face. Killing people has a sobering effect on a man and dispels all illusions about war.
