I converted the audio track to MP3's and the smallest one is about
8MB and that's just the Filthy Habits intro.

The 1st ten people to send me thier address I will send out a copy
and will include the comments by Chick when FZ was given award and
DZ accepted it.

[Zappa-List] True that Johnny Otis conducted sessions for Hot Rats?

2006-04-24 Thread myrtleedop
Philippe Manoeuvre says so in his latest entry for La discothèque
idéale, in Zappa-friendly French mag Rock Folk (Issue of April? May?
Forgot to check!!).
Cool full page photo of Zappa circa 1970 with a camera in hand.
Interesting anecdotes in the Hot Rats piece... but some sound a bit
strange to me (re. my subject line).
I also disagree that Zappa let all the 16 tracks fully opened for his
digital remix of the album. Because some of the voices are definitely
killed in there, for the benefit of the new ones. So we won some, lost
some instead.

In the MOJO tribute issue, someone (Barry Miles I think, but I'm not
certain) talks about watching Otis conduct the Mothers in the studio
while Zappa was in the control room. The track he talks about
specifically is Holiday In Berlin.
I can't see anyone 'conducting' Hot Rats, because it's built up
entirely of overdubs as far as I can tell, but Otis conducting the
Mothers around that time seems to be a fact.

[Zappa-List] Re: True that Johnny Otis conducted sessions for Hot Rats?

2006-04-24 Thread myrtleedop
Yeah, I had read about that HiB saxophone bit, where Otis instructed
the sax player on how to produce certain greasy sounds or something.
Manoeuvre must have gotten mixed up with that. There are, probably,
actual small combo, real time playing in the Rats sessions though.
But I doubt myself that Zappa was absent altogether, or un-
conducting, in a lot of those...
On the CD's Gumbo Variations opening bit, whom does it sound to you
gives the instructions, Zappa (with his former, higher pitched voice)
or Ian Underwood?
