That is one damn good email. Thanks.electricloopstation2 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hello All,I was at this show yesterday but couldn't get into it. A more positive review from another guy underneath to give you a neutral image. They first showed the Film of Zappa in the Roxy back in 1974. Great stuff and the sound was much better then the actual concert of ZPZ. The concert was in sound and in performance miles away from the Zappa movie we just saw. I know this concerthall has very bad soundings but I've seen many groups here who did a lot better. I've seen Frank playing in 1988 in the Veledrome in Gent in a concerthall he described as the worst ever played. But he also said that they would play at a quiet volume so that everything would be alright again, as it effectively was. I
have the tape so I can even tell know that it sounded ok.  Now in Vorst you couln'dt hear all the instruments very well, the bass sometimes was on mess of a sound, the keyboards were on and of, etc. When Terry began to sing, no voice. Was the soundman sleeping?? Enough about the sound. The band wasn't a band. They weren't together. As stated below they had to warm up during the first set. But is was Terry who pulled the second set together with his heavy drumming (he lost two drumsticks in the act) and cheerfull singing. When he went away even Steve Vai (with short hair) couldn't pulled the thing back together. It dropped again like pudding. Also Dweezil is no frontman, Ahmet can but he was nowhere to be seen (and he's damn right not be part of this were only in it for the money tour - comment I heard on the spot). I've seen AZ/DZ and they were great, also they had Mike Kenaelly and Scott Tunis back
then.Dweezil stood there, not moving a lot and saying little and the things he said were so rehearsed and cliche that it made me sick. During King Kong they did some improvisations like Zappa did in the movie (that's what Dweezil said they were gonna do). This was not a spontanious thing. I've got many live recordings of Zappa. Now Dweezil must have acces to a lot more. He took some parts and put them together without shaking the coctail. During the keyboarsolo every band member stood playing looking at thsi guy without showing any enthousiasm. Only the bassplayer and Napoleon jumped to the music. I think Mike Kenaelly would have done a better job moulding the band together and leading them thru wild improvisations instead of showing all the tricks Zappa did in a row.Not that they are no good musiscians, they are, but they try to copy Zappas' act, wich is foolisch to attempt. I'd rather have a personel
stamp on the performance wich Dweezil said in interviews he would do. Seen nothing of that. Even the setlist is almost the same every night. Even the effects and the kind of gitaarsolo's he plays are the same. Just seen the solo from Inca Roads on the net and live it was the same. Is he afraid or insicure?Anyway, I love Zappa, I love AZ/DZ, I Love the muffin man, The grandmothers, etc, But this was beyond my expectations. Finally we left after Montana. Yes indeed we left the concert. If the accoustics were better it would have been a lot more enjoyable. It could have inflicted the band's performance. Also the hall was only half filled. They had to hang curtains around the higher levels (a full hall would also give better accoustics-I know). If ZPZ had only chosen the Ancienne Belgique. It would have been completely sold out but far more superior to this hall.See you,LoopstationHere's the

sound of this concert hall is, shall we say, "less than optimal", and quite possibly a bit of a nightmare for the soundguy. We had seats directly behind the mixing booth so what we heard was probably "as good as it gets".The setlist: exactly the same as wannabeard posted above. The band: I was really impressed and pleasantly surprised. From the first note to the last, the playing was flawless and incredibly tight (and indeed, "heavy", as Balint noted above). A definite strongholder within the band is Napoleon M Brock. He gave warmth to the songs and "a face" to the band. Had a bit of trouble getting the high tones at times, but considering he's d

a clatter,I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutter, and fell flat on my ass.The moon on the titties of the new-fallen snowgave the luster of cheepnis to objects below, when, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature band, and all kinds of gear. With a little old conductor, so ugly and rank,I knew in a moment it must be St. Frank.More rapid than eagles, his curses they came, and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:"Now Ikie! Now Stevie! Now, Arthur and Vinnie! On, Warren! On, Napi! On, George, Ruth, and Howie! To the top of the arena! To the top of the Hall!We waited all night, but you didn't try to call!"As vegetables that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the skyso up to the house-top the cursers they flew, with the band full of horns, and Uncle Frank too.And then,
in a twinkling, I heard on the topthe prancing and pawing of the Pachuco Hop.As I drew in my head and was turning around, down the chimney Uncle Frank came with a bound. He was dressed all in purple, from his head to his foot, and his clothes were completed with a pair of python boots.A bundle of tapes he had flung on his back, and he looked like a road manager just opening his pack. His eyes--oh how piercing! His hair cut, how bonkers! His cheeks were rosettas, his nose was a honker! His droll little mouth was drawn up in a sneer, and the hair on his chin made just who he was clear. The stump of a Winston he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a gaunt face and barely any belly,And with those boots finally off, you knew it'd be smelly. He was dark and severe, a curmudgeonly old elf,and I gave him the finger, in spite of myself.A wink of his eye and a twist of his handsoon
showed me how deftly he directed his band.He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, and finished by mumbling, "Jesus thinks you're a jerk".And laying his finger aside of his nose, and giving a nod, he struck his famed Collier's pose. Then he sprang to his bus, that he'd named Phydeaux III,And away they all flew singing "Absolutely Free".But I heard him exclaim, 'ere they drove out of sight,"Thanks for coming to the concert, Boys and Girls - good night!"      SOFA

RE: [Zappa-List] Ripping?

2005-12-23 Thread Jack Simpson

Holy crap! That is some email that you just wrote Jim L.Jim L <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:   mr_and_mrs_skull asked -     All,     What precisely is ripping, as opposed to merely burning and copying?     Mr. Skull      I think the term first gained popular usage when mp3 caught on. A music CD (usually factory made) would be inserted and the act of producing mp3 files on the hard drive from it was termed ripping. I guess a new term was necessary in that audio on a music CD is in a format that can’t be stored on a hard drive. CDDA or compact digital disc format. So to get the music onto your hard drive it can’t be just copied but rather must be changed to a different format. Wav files are almost bit for bit identical to CDDA but the header is a little different on CDDA by design so that it can’t be copied so easily. At least that’s what they thought back in the early eighties. Mp3 is of course not similar at all and most of the digital information must be discarded when mp3 is created. Flac and shn files still contain all of the data from the original wav file but store it a bit more compactly and can be expanded back into
the original wav file. With mp3 you can expand back to wav but you can never get back the information that’s been tossed out. That’s why they’re referred to as lossy while wav, flac and shn are considered lossless. Much of the information that gets tossed out in the creation of mp3 isn’t even audible however and that’s why they can sound as good as the do. Results seem to vary dramatically to my ear depending on what encoder is used. To me LAME makes the very best mp3 and razorlame is a good front end for it. Both are free.      Then DVD entered the picture. Commercially produced DVD is encrypted and so can’t be directly copied to the hard drive or disc ether. So ripping
software for DVD became available in short order. It decrypts the files so that they can be copied. Unencrypted DVD’s like we share here can be directly copied to the hard drive.       Also if you do a direct disc copy of a CD it doesn’t have to be ripped to another format but can directly copy the CDDA files. The belief that EAC (exact audio copy) software is superior at reading the disc however has lead to the practice of ripping an audio CD into wav files first and then authoring a new CD from them rather than doing a disc copy. Everything I’ve read as well as my own experiences seems to back up this belief. Ideally a software could read the disc like EAC but create a
disc image from the data instead of making wav files. That would avoid converting from CDDA to wav and then back to CDDA just to copy a disc. Perhaps EAC will get around to that in the future.   Jim L From: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED]Sent: Thursday, December 22, 2005 9:30 PMTo: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.comSubject: [Zappa-List] Ripping?   All, What precisely is ripping, as opposed to merely burning and copying? Mr. Skull  "Being in politics is like being a football coach; you have to be smart enough to understand the game and dumb enough to think it's important." -Eugene McCarthy, 1968

I find it strange that Rolling Stone has Frank listed as one of The Immortals. It seems so hypocritical. Don't get me wrong: It should be in there! I just find it a little ironic.

On another big note: I want to take a moment to thank everyone in this Group. I have found everyone to be so very generous. It warms my heart to feel the love that you all have for our Lost Icon. It is obvious that you miss him. Thank you for sharing.

p.s. One of the bonuses of being in this Group is the ingenious and humorous ways that some of you breath life back into envelopes that for all intents and purposes would normally have been trashed three mailings ago. Jim L <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

This one is a VCD vine Jack. It's a new rip I did of 10/31/1981 The Torture Never Stops on 2 discs as well as 2 discs containing the original MTV broadcast from the same date. A 5th disc has a 48 minute Australian interview program 1973 featuring FZ that asks the burning question. Is rock music inciting revolution? and a couple other short video clips thrown in on that one. I made it VCD to make sure everyone could copy it with an ordinary CD burner. Sounds like everyone got a DVD burner for Christmas though.
