[Zappa-List] CIRCUS Magazine Is No More
According to Gawker.com, long-running rock publication Circus has closed its doors. Circus Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Gerald Rothberg has sent the following magazine-closure e-mail to the publication's contributors: "It is with sadness and a deep sense of loss that I must inform you that I've experienced great financial loss, which includes Circus magazine. Over the last year, I've tried my best to hold on to Circus mag, selling all my personal possessions, including my home, pumping the money into the mag. And I've lost all. I've held off contacting people because of the shame and humiliation I've experienced. I'm broke. I feel like Humpty Dumpty who had a great fall. "Circus magazine is in foreclosure. Will the magazine be resurrected? I don't know. If it will appear on the newsstands again, we'll find out. Let me say this now, I appreciate and I am grateful your contributions all these years and wish all my freelance contributors the best of health and success." According to RockCritics.com, Rothberg started Circus in 1966 under the title Hullabaloo. In the almost 40 years since, Circus has been many different kinds of music publication. It started out as a general interest rock magazine, running stories on classic rockers such as the DOORS, GENESIS, and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD. Later, Rothberg realized that his target audience teen boys loved to read about their favorite rock stars over and over, month after month. So when a band like KISS hit, they were one of Circus's biggest cover stars. Circus covered all kinds of rock and pop music but always featured a large number of heavy metal and hard rock bands in its pages. Following an unpopular move to a pop culture weekly in the mold of People in the late '70s, Rothberg went back to a monthly format and started to get back to the hard rock and heavy metal stars that made his magazine sales soar. Rothberg's lean toward those kind of acts paid off big time in the '80s when the hair metal explosion hit. Month in and month out, it was DEF LEPPARD, VAN HALEN, and BON JOVI on the covers. The hair metal years in the '80s were Rothberg's most profitable for Circus. When grunge hit in the '90s, Circus got confused and lost its focus (even putting rappers ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT on the cover one month and getting tons of hate mail in the process). Yahoo! [Zappa-List] STEVE VAI Schedules NAMM Signing Sessions
Legendary guitarist Steve Vai will attend this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, which is being held January 15-18 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Steve will be taking part in signing sessions at the Ibanez booth at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 16 and at the Carvin booth on Saturday, January 17 at 11:00 a.m. Steve will also appear at the Carvin press conference on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Important: The NAMM show is **NOT** open to the public. The only attendees are NAMM member companies and their invited guests. As previously reported, Steve Vai is offering an unprecedented, masterclass opportunity to all music students and guitar enthusiasts. After testing the masterclass in various international territories, he is now bringing Alien Guitar Secrets to the United States. This three-hour-plus unique package gives the student a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear Steve discuss music theory, guitar techniques, the music business, and most importantly, techniques on how to discover and unlock your personal musical identity. It also includes a question-and-answer session, and a few attendees will be chosen to jam with Steve in this intimate environment. [Zappa-List] CAPTAIN BEEFHEART Dead At 69
According to The Associated Press, musician and artist Don Van Vliet, who performed a complex brand of experimental rock under the name CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, died Friday. He was 69. The Michael Werner Gallery in New York confirmed Van Vliet's death in California due to complications stemming from multiple sclerosis. The gallery exhibits his paintings. Van Vliet was probably best known for the album Trout Mask Replica, which was released in 1969 by CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND HIS MAGIC BAND. The album's angular, dissonant take on blues rock and Van Vliet's growling, surreal lyrics put him outside the mainstream, but staked his place in rock history. Rolling Stone magazine recently ranked Trout Mask Replica number 58 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album was produced by fellow experimental rock pioneer FRANK ZAPPA, a high school friend from the desert town of Lancaster, CA. "Record producers have always been certain that Don Vliet was just a hype away from the big money," according to a 1970 profile in Rolling Stone. "But Beefheart stubbornly continues what he's doing and waits patiently for everyone else to come around." By shunning commercial success and a more accessible sound, Van Vliet became a role model for subsequent generations of musicians. His music is cited as an influence on the rise of punk, post-punk and new wave. Beefheart is also claimed as a kindred spirit by free jazz musicians and avant-garde classical composers. In the 1980s, Van Vliet turned full-time to art. He painted in a raw, expressionistic style and showed his acclaimed work widely even as he withdrew from the public eye. He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years. For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you.Yahoo! [Zappa-List] Guitar Legend STEVE VAI And BERKLEE Attempt World Record For Largest Online Guitar Lesson
Berkleemusic, the online continuing education division of Boston's renowned Berklee College of Music, along with Grammy-award winning guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, have announced a call to action for guitarists around the world to join forces and set the Guinness World Record for the largest online guitar lesson on March 3, 2011. This first-of-its-kind initiative will bring together the worldwide community of guitarists in an unprecedented online celebration of music education. Vai, who is currently recording a new album and preparing for an extensive world tour, is a Berklee alumnus with a devoted fan base in over seventy countries. Although he is not a guitar instructor, Vai is a passionate advocate for music exploration and hopes the event will encourage players to continue to cultivate their own unique style and spirit on the instrument. "This online event, and the larger efforts Berkleemusic is making to teach students around world, is a great example of the collaboration that happens at Berklee," says Vai. "Whether you're in Boston, Bombay, or Brussels, we'll all be together on March 3." The World's Largest Online Guitar Lesson is a one-time event that takes place Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. EST. Berkleemusic has partnered with Livestream, the pre-eminent live streaming video platform, to host this event in their New York City studio. Participants can learn more about the online lesson at this location. Vai's free online lesson will last 30 minutes, and will provide a look into Steve's technique with a focus on how guitarists can develop and gain insight into their own playing. In order to further engage with his fans, Steve is also encouraging participants to submit questions to him online, which he will answer onstage at the conclusion of his online lesson. Interested participants can submit questions to Steve on the event's web page, located here. As a gesture of its commitment to music education, Berkleemusic will donate one dollar for every person that joins the online lesson to the Steve Vai Online Scholarship Fund at Berkleemusic, which is designed to reward and assist outstanding students studying in Berkleemusic's multi-course certificate programs. "Steve Vai is one of the most popular guitarists on the planet, and deservedly so," says Dave Kusek, CEO of Berkleemusic. "We're thrilled and honored to partner with Steve for this unique online guitar lesson, and excited to play a part in exposing a record-setting number of guitarists from around the world to his 'otherworldly' techniques." Berkleemusic and Steve Vai have also partnered to author a brand new 12-week online course: Steve Vai Guitar Techniques. This online course presents students with the chance to gain a deep understanding of Vai's death-defying playing styles, repertoire, techniques, and musical concepts from anywhere in the world, and incorporate their learnings into their own playing. The Steve Vai Guitar Techniques online course builds upon the renowned guitar curriculum that Berklee has been providing to students for decades. The course is now open for enrollment for the school's spring term which begins on April 4, 2011. Happy Thanksgiving All
[Zappa-List] Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays all!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays all!
[Zappa-List] Introduction
Hi Group, Just wanted to introduce a 'newbie' to the group. What can I say? FZ has ruled my world for many many years, was able to see him live 5 times (certainly not enough), met Frank at the book signing for the 'Real FZ' book. I think I have around 75 FZ cd's (all commercial releasees), about 12 or so videos/dvds, 7 or 8 books this man has always intrigued me. His brilliance and intellectual-ism inspires me to keep 'informed'. My favorite solo is probably on One SizeInca Roads, or possibly The Squirm off of Apocrypha and now released on Trance fusion under a different name and different mix. Favorite quote has to be 'jazz isn't dead" Favorite period, that's a tough one. Most likely the period of Zoot, One Size, Hot Rats, but the Grand Wazoo and Lumpy Gravy hit the stereo quite often. Have to commend Dweezil for doing such an incredible job on bringing Frank's music out to the public again. I got the chance to see 4 of the shows and that wasn't enough. I'm looking forward to seeing more and to see what he comes up with next. I have to say, he is keeping the music, the atmosphere, the talent all up to Frank's standard.doing the music justice with the band he put together and with the fun they are having on stage. The last show at the Morongo just floored me. What a way to end the tour this past year!! And lastly, being new to the group, I see there is a vine on the ZPZ shows. any chance of getting in this late? or the ability to do a trade with anyone? I'd like to relive some of these musical moments again. Thanks for listening!!! Robert

[Zappa-List] Re: Beefalo
There are some pieces of music on this release that are simply amazing. Some of my favorites so far... Keep it Greasy Torture Never Stops (all 23 minutes worth - and this version is so different than any other version I've heard) Andy Illinois Enema Bandit (never heard Zappa forget lyrics before!!!) there are a few songs with guitar solos that equal and surpass anything on the guitar cd or the SUAPYG cd. Any Zappa fan should definitely go out and get this one. In fact any fan of music (with intelligence) should have this just my opinion. The quality is amazing, the playing is amazing. I can only imagine what else is locked up in the UMRK!!! Robert

[Zappa-List] Zappa Beer
Hey folks, Just want everyone to be aware that lagunitas brewing company has released it's 3rd Zappa beer to date. This one is the Lumpy Gravy ale. Sadly, I missed out on the 2nd beer (Kill Ugly Radio) released and I was looking all last year, but apparently, I missed it. And once these 'brewed once only' ales are gone, they are gone. So, I'm forwarding this info to everyone who is collecting the Zappa ales. I went on to bevmo.com and did a search and ordered by mail, in case you can't find it locally. Drink up! Robert
