[zfs-discuss] future PCIe x4 SATA/eSATA card products

2008-12-15 Thread SV
I emailed one of the more popular low-cost PCI card vendors and asked them
about [maybe 4/8 port???], PCIe x4 [or more] cards in their product roadmap.
They replied positively theat they were working on a PCIe x4 card, with both
internal and eSATA options. They said it's cooking in the lab, and wait until
the R&D folks get it all together... but I feel it is fair to say we will have
more options in 2009.

Since I have a mobo with PCIe, and couldn't justify the cost of [a PCI-X,
Opteron based] motherboard, I real excited about this.

I told the vendor specificially to check out our postings here on
opensolaris.org, and encouraged them make sure the chipset works in JBOD mode
on OpenSolaris x86/x64. We'll see.

Re: [zfs-discuss] Upgrading my ZFS server

2008-12-07 Thread SV
js.lists , or anyone else who is using a XFX MDA72P7509 Motherboard ---

that onboard NIC is a Marvell? - Do you choose not to use it in favor of the
Intel PCI NIC?
Marvell provides Solaris 10 x86/x64 drivers on their website, I was hoping the
Marvell works in Opensolaris, because 97% of the AMD motherboard I researched
have a Realtek NIC which I don't want.

XFX's website is one of those "register your serial number to get access". I
hate those manufacturers that don't let you research the details before you buy!

Re: [zfs-discuss] any 64-bit mini-itx successes

2008-05-02 Thread SV
ellisonb,

have you been to mini-itx.com? The only one NON-VIA cpu based mini-itx mobo I
have ever heard about:

Jetway J9F2
uses Intel Core Duo Mobile with IntelĀ® 945GM + ICH7M chipset + 2 DIMM slots for
a max of 2GB RAM

VIA sponsors the mini-itx spec - I think it's currently 2 dimm slots that max
at 4GB, and that's only on the CN896 chipset. Otherwise its 2 slots @ 2GB like
the Jetway.

Wes,

OpenWGT is the project to re-flash netgear devices with linux busybox or debian
variants. Unfortunately, IMO the netgear camp is not as well organized as the
Linksys camp: Openwrt.org (I am an openwrt White Russian user).

You can use openwrt to research the Netgear ReadyNAS specs, but I surspect that
will be a long road ahead. If you buy the ReadyNAS pro and pry it open, please
contribute your findings to the wiki!
