Marc, I'm baffled at your insistent glee on this topic. I have seen no
"mountain" regarding this. I would have missed the initial report
altogether if not for Jim's pointing it out, and would probably have
thought nothing of it afterward had you not gone ballistic. The first
newspaper report I've noticed of it was in Tuesday's, I think, Seattle
Times, on page A10. About three column-inches (47.6
Canuck-Celsius-column-centimeters). It may have been bigger news in DC,
giving many there a laugh, but I really don't think many Americans paid
much attention to it.

But I suppose that's bad, too. Either we don't pay enough attention to
Canada and Canadians, or we pay too much attention. As I mentioned
before, I suspect you're merely demonstrating that famous Canadian
thin-skinnedness.

> IMore tommmorow, but I'm glad to see you've dropped your claim

Jim did not drop that claim, as far as I can tell. At least, I hope he
didn't. He was right.

> Why don't officials have the right to free speech?

Who says they don't? Publishing "private" conversations overheard in a
public setting is hardly comparable to, say, bugging someone's
telephone.

> Secondly, Jim, you don't seem to have read the article you

But he did not misremember the nature of the position.

True, so you are technically correct about Jim being in error. But he is
correct in spirit. MediaWorks was acting in its capacity as a contract
media advisor to government. So while the Canadian government did not
make the comment, their hired help did. In either case, it reflects on
the Canadian government.

> Are you going to admit you were wrong in both instances, truly
> hoist by your own petard regarding the nature of both incidents.

I really don't understand your bloodlust here. Jim was right, not wrong,
in his assessment of Ducros as a politician, as he clearly demonstrated
by appeal to a dictionary definition. Why are you so insistent that Jim
admit his supposed error?

[ZION] Computer Problems

2002-11-28 Thread Ronn Blankenship
At 11:19 AM 11/27/02 -0600, someone on another list wrote:

Normally I'm not a believer in demonic possession, but if you spend much
time on a computer you could quickly be convinced otherwise.

Starting last night, this computer would only come up in "Safe Mode": not
the menu which allows you to choose regular mode, safe mode, DOS mode,
etc., but ONLY safe mode. After three hours or so of tinkering, it seems
that (at least part of) the problem is that the keyboard has developed a
problem so the computer thinks that the "Shift" key is _always_ on. So I
am typing on an "official" (so light it feels like junk) Micro$oft keyboard
and using the touchpad on the ALPS keyboard. If I can't get the latter
fixed, I guess I'll have to find a substitute (I already know that the
model I like has been discontinued).

All I hope is that this is the _only_ demon to be exorcised . . .

Gary Smith:

A sage plumber I once visited at his throne on a high pile,
er, mountain of, er, uh, well anyway he told me that there
are two secrets to plumbing:

The good water comes up, and the dirty water goes down
the hole.

___

Did he say what to do if the steel wool scouring pad goes
down the toilet first and gets stuck? ("I didn't do it.")

If he didn't, does anyone else have any ideas. I haven't
been able to snake it out yet, and I'm not sure any of
those chemicals (like Drano) will work on steel wool.

It has two toilets, two sinks, and a bathtub clogged right
now. Fortunately, we have one other set of plumbing that
drains past wherever the clog is, but I'm afraid we are
going to push it to a point where everything backs up.

What a wonderful weekend for company.

The turkey was good, though. Calmed everyone right down.

Re: [ZION] Fundis

2002-11-28 Thread Jon Spencer
Actually, the Baptists in our area (Raleigh) have a hard time bashing the
Church, mainly because of decades of selfless service by so many members in
this area. The temple was well accepted in this area, and won the Apex
award for the most beautiful property (or something like that) last year.
Our bookstore was also well accepted. Yes, there were a few wackos out
there. One day while I was at the temple site during its construction, we
looked out of the construction trailer to see some wackos in a circle
praying about something or another. When we approached them (just two of us
with friendly smiles) they disappeared.

A similar thing has happened at the middle school our ward meets at. We
have grown so much in the area that we ran out of room. They are building a
new stake centre-sized building, but it will not be ready until next
October. We are, in fact, meeting in the most expensive LDS meeting house
in the world. We have to pay the Wake County Public School System
$10/person each Sunday. Since we always have between 250 - 300 people, we
pay more than $10K/month! Well, anyway, on a couple of Sundays some folks
have come to the school, dressed in other than normal goin'-to-meetin'
attire. They were not very friendly when I greeted them. A little later,
during the Sacrament meeting, we spied them holding a similar prayer circle
outside the school.

Apparently, it hasn't worked! We are about to form yet another ward (who
will be without a home, but will probably travel to a meeting house closer
to that part of our ward that does have a single time slot available).

a couple of years back, we had 12 wards in our stake. The Stake
presidencies goal was 12 stakes by 2020. We may make it!

Re: [ZION] Can Anyone Become A Fully Qualified Member In Good Standing Afte

2002-11-28 Thread Jon Spencer
Paul - this is excellent advice. If one's motivation for telling on someone
is along the lines of "that person shouldn't have a temple recommend," then
do yourself a favor and keep the lips sealed. However, if you are truly
concerned for an individual's eternal blessings and wish to help them avoid
trying to mock the Lord, then do as Paul (Paul O. that is :-) suggests.
Talk to them. if they are too afraid to go to the Bishop alone, then offer
to go with them. After that, in love and faith, seek the assistance of your
Priesthood leadership to help this individual.

[ZION] Can Anyone Become a Fully Qualified Member....

2002-11-28 Thread Gary Smith
Stacy,
If it concerns you, discuss it with his bishop. Let him know what you
know about the situation, then let him handle it. If he sees any major
problem, he will work it. He is the judge in Israel, not any of us
(including Paul, even though I heard he has a gavel he likes rapping the
table with) has the right to judge him for past sins. We only have the
responsibility to ensure the bishop is aware of the problem.

I see this in the same vein as a person who is called to a calling. When
asked to sustain the person, if I know there is some serious/major reason
to not sustain the person, it is my duty to bring it up. Once I discuss
it with the authority, it is in their hands. I don't worry about it
anymore.

[ZION] Paul's Dad

2002-11-28 Thread Gary Smith
I find that the thing that brings me the greatest peace during this time
of troubles and uncertainty is being in the temple. I can leave all the
terrorists, unemployment, recession, Democrats, and all the other
problems outside. I feel the Spirit, and am re-energized so that I am
stronger to handle the telestial world we live in.

Paul, if you have a headache, do you resist taking aspirin/tylenol/motrin
because you can't bear the headache going down some? So it is with the
temple, except that it works like morphine (with fewer side effects). It
brings me peace in these troubles times. Now is the time to go, when you
are struggling the most. Will you do us the favor and set a date to go
again? Hopefully in December, but if not, definitely in January. Go
several times. Show the terrorists you are going to beat them by
performing eternal saving ordinances for the deceased. They might kill a
few people's bodies, but you will be saving several people's souls.

[ZION] Turkey Mood

2002-11-28 Thread Tom Matkin
I'm guessing, from what I read below, that the mood on the list should
be very upbeat after today.

I'm planning to have for lunch a turkey and cheese sandwich with milk
and a banana for desert whenever I have the need to be sharp in the
evening.

Tom

Turkey chemical may lift mood, researchers say
>From Herald Wire Services

The chemical in turkey that may cause people to nod off after
Thanksgiving dinner also plays a role in maintaining good mood and
memory, especially among people with a family history of depression,
Dutch researchers report in the current issue of Brain, Behavior and
Immunity.

Tryptophan, found in turkey and commonly blamed in the media for
creating the sluggish after-feast feeling, is a metabolic precursor to
the chemical messenger known as serotonin. It's also found in foods like
milk, bread, cheese and bananas.

Tryptophan levels were lowered in 27 volunteers, 16 of whom had an
immediate relative with major depression. The depletion temporarily
induced mood depression in half of the subjects who had a family history
of depression but in only 9 percent of those with no family history of
depression.

The authors suggest the findings may have implications for people with a
family history of major depression whose tryptophan becomes depleted
because of dieting or cancer treatments.

[ZION] Text Messages on Cell Phone

2002-11-28 Thread Tom Matkin
It just came to my attention that the text messaging function on my cell
phone has now been activated. A holiday gift to me from Rogers AT&T. I
was able to send a brief message (test) to my regular email address and
also to send an email message to my cell phone from my computer. I also
sent a brief message to my wife (Hi Hon, Love Tom) to her cell phone and
just to make sure there is peace in the family I sent one to my
daughter. That pretty much exhausts my sense of what can be done with
this new method of communication. Does anyone on the list use this
service? If so why? It is painfully slow to compose even the simplest
message, something akin to setting the time on your VCR. Perhaps some of
you out there can suggest good reasons for this service. I've seen the
cool TV commercials where disarmingly casual young men warn each other
from the horrors of attending a possible "chick flick" using their text
messaging phones, or where two young lovers share messages from either
end of a Greyhound bus. But at $.15 a pop one wonders. Why not just
call the person up and talk? I suppose it makes the phone into a
glorified pager, but I already have a voice mail feature on my cell
phone to collect the wrong numbers that frequently catch me. I seem to
have a number that was once had by a sales rep. at Zurich Life
Insurance. He still gets a lot of calls er... I still get a lot of
his calls on that number. His name is Neal. I hope we meet one day.
I'll click my tongue and point my finger with my thumb straight up, in
that classic sales rep sort of way, and say "Hi ya Neal, I've got yer
number!" It would take 45 minutes to turn those seven words into a text
message on the cell phone.

Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving to y'all. Here's a link to tell you how to
avoid killing yourself preparing that Butterball. Sorry if it's too
late to help.

[ZION] Carry a Colt

After much pondering, Stacy Smith favored us with:

Carry mace. I do.

Carry a Colt .45, I do. Of course I only carry it when I think I am at
high risk for needing it, and that hasn't been since 1970 more than 30
years ago. --JWR

[ZION] True Christians

false Christianity. True Christianity is found only in the Church of Jesus

Minor fly in the ointment, of course: Alberta city students did better than their
urban counterparts. But still, with comprehensive, province-wide testing in place, and
a sense of direct accountability to stakeholders, that's how we're able to keep our
educational system consistently amongst the best in the world. No magic, and nothing
no other jurisidiction couldn't do. Well, okay, that crisp
winter air does clear the mind a bit before an algebra exam...

Newfoundland has a complex school system which I won't get into here, but again, they
have province-wide exams. And I think that's a major key. Not the magic button, but a
sine qua non (a necessary but not sufficient condition). Here's a little known
factoid for y'all. The yacht that is currently in first place to challenge the US in
the America's Cup, comes from that great seafaring
nation.Switzerland. They found a company in St. John's (which is nothing if not
surrounded by sea, and has experience as a port going back over 400 years), which
specializes in modelling hull shapes mathematically, and also has big water tanks for
actual testing. It's believed the Swiss boat has a much better hull, which responds
best under all conditions, and if anyone will be the US, it will
be the Swiss. Wouldn't that be something? They'd have to appoint someone an admiral
just to present the award..

RE: [ZION] Can Anyone Become A Fully Qualified Member In Good Standing

2002-11-28 Thread larry . jackson
Stacy Smith:

Well, it has been said that he was not honest at his
baptismal interview. However, I currently have only
second-hand information of this.

___

If true, another reason to be very careful. It is very rare, in
my experience, that a dishonest person becomes honest.

His status in the judicial system is a matter of public
record, though. So if this is really troubling you, it would
not be hard to find out when he was baptized and when
he completed the requirements of the law (assuming
he has).

Three things to consider.

First, second-hand information is more often than not
unreliable. There are too many motives involved and
folks usually don't get it right.

Second, since he has a temple recommend, I presume
there has been a significant amount of activity and living
of the gospel. This would weigh heavily in his favor, all
other things being equal (unless he has been lying in
those interviews).

Third, his bishop may know all about all of this already.

If it turns out he is still legally on probation or parole, his
bishop and stake president should know and would
have the wonderful job of figuring out what to do about it.
For sure he would lose his recommend. He wouldn't
necessarily lose his membership.

If it turns out he is clean with the law, but lied in his
interviews to get where he is with the Church, his bishop
and stake president will have to figure out what to do
about that, too, but the decision would be easier for them.

And, since I don't have the whole story from anyone yet,
none of this may apply at all.

In any event, it would appear that your first decision to not
be involved with this person was a very wise one. Don't
let your guard down.

A quote from the report:
"Alberta students did exceptionally well: Rural students outscored even the urban ones
of all other provinces except B.C., Quebec and Newfoundland."

So there you have it, folks. Albertan farmers are smarter than your average city
slicker. Apparently my children's school, which is in a small town of about 1,000,
scores up near the top academically. Others have noted this and swamped the school
this year with requests to have their children attend there even though they don't
live in the school district. The school had to turn away many.

But I'm very surprised about Newfoundland. They have earned their reputation
honestly, from my experience, so I'm flabbergasted that they scored so well.

Geez, Heidi--isn't this just like a guy! Never mind your son's picture
was in the Friend (which, by the way, is really cool) and that he should
be congratulated, it's all about the food!

Must be Thanksgiving or something. . .;-)
