I'm not a Tolkien fan -- nothing negative. I did read The Hobbit years ago but just
never got around to any of the trilogy. So maybe this is funny, and maybe it isn't,
but there was a cartoon in the latest New Yorker. You don't really need to see it to
get it, I wouldn't think.

 Subject: [ZION] LOTR Two Towers

Well, I'm excited for movie two. I want to see it opening night, not
sure how I'll work that in to my life with a baby. My husband has seen
Fellowship for the first time on DVD over Thanksgiving weekend, so now
he wants to see Two Towers with me, hurrah.

A friend brought the DVD by at Thanksgiving, so I got to see much of
that backstory, making-of footage. Made me more excited to see the next
installment. Made me wonder why I'm not doing cool stuff in my life,
like making scale models of orthanc, or designing elven swords, or more
particularly, designing and making the costumes.
My daughter was Fleur de la Coeur for Halloween, and making her
costume was too fun. She's a natural platinum blonde at this age, and
her good friend already claimed the Hermione role.

My prediction for this Two Towers movie is that it will be violent. As
I was rereading Two Towers this week, I was noticing a preponderance of
battle scenes. Also, I 'm looking forward to Eowyn's character being
introduced to the movie--a fabulous character that could be the star of
 a lesser work.

Reading two of the books a measure of fan status? I'm running into geek
rating. I've read the entire LOTR trilogy four times in the last
thirteen months. Too me, the dividing line between the fans and the
 fanatics is learning elvish.
Though now more people talk about LOTR and I find I know much more
about it that other readers, I believe I should give in to my interest
in the languages of middle earth. apparently I'm a tolkien geek anyway.

My eight-year-old wants to have a LOTR-themed birthday party next year.
 That's my girl!

 Johnna
okay, I'll admit my friends called me Meriadoc all those years ago, and
my best friend was Pippin. anyone else had a LOTR moniker?

[ZION] The Two Towers (LOTR)

2002-12-14 Thread Gary Smith
Okay, then let me give you this test and see how well you really
remember them...

1) What is Gollum's real name?
2) What is the name of the king's evil advisor?
3) What is an Ent?
4) Who is Gollum's friend that helps him?
5) How does Frodo escape the tower?
6) How many palantiri are there total, and how many are known of by the
end of book 3?
7) What army does Aragorn raise to help him win a major battle?

That should do it. If you can answer these questions, then I agree that
you remember the books remarkably well. My wife says no cheating by
peeking in a book for the answers, or asking any other source. Also, if
you send the answers to this list, make sure to warn everyone that there
is spoiler information involved.

everyone that there is spoiler information involved.

Good call.

WARNING!! This message contains SPOILER INFORMATION!! Don't read it
unless you already know everything it says! In which case, reading it is
superfluous. But then, I'm talking to a bunch of people that participate
in an email discussion list, so I'm being redundant.

 1) What is Gollum's real name?

Mullog.

 2) What is the name of the king's evil advisor?

Francie Ducros.

 3) What is an Ent?

The wife of an Ooncle.

 4) Who is Gollum's friend that helps him?

That would be Mr. Valium.

 5) How does Frodo escape the tower?

The firemen get him with their ladder rig.

 6) How many palantiri are there total, and how many are known
of by the end of book 3?

The same number as before I got here. If you've lost some of your
palantiri, don't try to pin the blame on me.

 7) What army does Aragorn raise to help him win a major battle?

An army of those fast-growing Star Wars clones.

Just kidding! He probably just raised himself some army Ents. As you
know, they are social ensects, and can thrive in one of those
glass-sided Ent farms.

That should do it. If you can answer these questions, then I
agree that you remember the books remarkably well.

About time you made that admission. (By the way, which books are we
talking about?)

[ZION] The Two Towers (LOTR)

2002-12-11 Thread Gary Smith
Unless you've read at least two of the LOTR books this year to prepare
for it, I don't think you are really excited about the movie coming out.
Last year to prepare for the first movie, I read the Hobbit and
Fellowship. This year, I've read both Two Towers and Return of the King
(I was going to wait until next year, but just couldn't leave Sam hanging
there for an entire year. Won't say anything more so as not to give away
the ending of this movie).

BTW, I can now be classified as a Harry Potter fan. I read all 4 HP books
in 8 days, books 3 and 4 in the last three days (and book 4 is 750
pages). I'm really impressed. JK Rowling's first book is a little weak
(movie is better, though the book explains a lot), but the rest of the
books are much stronger. I can't believe I'm going to have to wait for
book 5 to see what comes next, now that Voldemoort is as strong as he is.

The Saturday before Episode I came out, a local theater showed all
three of the original Star Wars films (IV, V, and VI) on the same

price) would get you in to all three shows, or any parts of the

Popcorn was free at the theater. Sadly, there was no popcorn

[ZION] The Two Towers

2002-12-03 Thread Mark Gregson

(no spoilers in this email)

Yes, I will be taking a few hours off work on the Friday after The Two Towers comes
out to go see it. That way I can get in at the matinee price of $8.50 instead of the
evening price of $13.50. Once again, I will be taking my oldest son. My wife wants
to come to this first viewing with me. Last year I just went with my son because I
didn't want her distracting me with a barrage of questions about the movie. What to
do? Do I let her come with me to the first viewing?

For those who have not read the book but have seen the movie, The Two Towers is far
more action packed. Your senses will reel at the visual and aural onslaught. Not
_my_ senses of course. I will be drinking it in with a large funnel. Since the
second movie was shot at the same time as the first, the feel is essentially seamless.
This is something never before seen in any major motion picture series. In fact, has
any set of movies ever been shot in this way before?
