[Zope-dev] Maintainer position for the Zope Windows builds vacant

2005-09-15 Thread Andreas Jung

Hi,

Christian Theune, the current maintainer of the windows builds, announced
to step down as maintainer. This means that this position is vacant.

So this is your chance to become famous :-)

To be honest, doing Zope releases is a bit of work and not always fun but
it is work that has to be done by someone. So if you are interested and if
you have the resources, raise your finger.

Since new Zope 2 releases are scheduled for October I would like to see
this position filled asap. I will definitely continue on the source
releases but I have not enough Windows know-how to do it myself. Since
there are lot of *serious* Zope-on-Windows users I do expect that someone
takes over this great job.

Having no volunteer for the Windows builds would mean that only source code
releases would be available in the future. I'm fine with that but possibly
not all Zope-on-Windows users...so if you depend on Zope-on-Windows you
should do something for your dependency to be fulfilled.

Cheers,
Andreas

Re: [Zope-dev] Maintainer position for the Zope Windows builds vacant

2005-09-15 Thread Jim Fulton

My hope is that, starting with Zope 2.9, the Zope 2 releases will,
like the Zope 3 releases, be built with zpkg. zpkg is a system for
assembling components (basically packages) based on dependency information
and automatically creating python distutils-based distributions. This
approach has some advantages and disadvantages:

+ Much more of the process is automated,

+ Binary releases can be built automaticall

- The releases include just Zope

- The binary releases install into Python -- meaning that only one
release of Zope can be installed for a given Python release.

My thought for windows is that we'd provide a *simple* combined installer
that installs Python and Zope by invoking separate Python and Zope installers.

This won't affect Zope 2.8 and earlier versions of Zope 2.

[Zope-dev] Allowing @ in object ids

2005-09-15 Thread Florent Guillaume
Today @ is forbidden in object ids. That's controlled by the bad_id
regexp in OFS.ObjectManager, which tries to ensure that ids will be
useable as URL components.

However, there's no reason to disallow this, as the URL spec (http://
www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1738.txt) says:

An HTTP URL takes the form:
  http://host:port/path?searchpart
   [...]
Within the path and searchpart components, /, ;, ? are
reserved. The / character may be used within HTTP to designate a
   hierarchical structure.

Note that somewhere else in the spec, it says that @ (and others) MAY
be reserved by some schemes, but HTTP doesn't actually make it reserved.

Furthermore, many projects have monkey-patched bad_id to allow @ and
see no ill-effects.
Having @ in ids is very useful for various things, one of them being
to have email-like identifiers (think jabber for instance). There are
other uses.

Unless there's opposition, I'll change the code to allow it.

So try to revert the software update and see it the error goes away...this

Jonathan Cyr wrote:

Indeed, generating HTML by hand is specifcally why I use ZPT. The
well-formed-ness and associated checking mean I never miss out the odd
, or closing tag, which I remember being a constant problem,
especially in complicated DTML.

There's also the rediculous DTML namespace lookup rules, which, once
upon a time, I used to know, and now am grateful for not having to care
about...

In addition to CSS, I've found it pretty good for inserting items into
JavaScript, Applet and Embed elements.

I'd probably do these using a python script if ZPT can't cut it, which
it often can. Although I still long for a ZPT mode which DOESN'T do some
of the checking, and where you have better control over where whitespace
is inserted...

I find that I'm attuned to a tag system that jumps out at me when
reading The ZPT stuff wasn't as easy to parse visually for me

I found a good HTML highlighting mode for my editor (emacs) helped a lot
with this...

Funny, I bought Zope's approach hook, line sinker, early on, with
the various Zope books published with DTML being a major piece of the
Zope puzzle. DTML made sense to me then, still does.

Maybe you like ZClasses too? ;-)

[Zope] Zwiki conflicts with my product

2005-09-15 Thread Nicholas Wieland
I've developed a FS based product, and now I'm preparing the environment to put it in production.

[Zope] zope is selfrestarting: can't uninstall a product!

2005-09-15 Thread daniele

Hi!
I've asked to the italian mailing list, but no reslut... so I try here.

About 2 weeks ago I found a memory leak in a product for zope
(ZPhotoSlides). Being furious about that, I went to the Products folder
and deleted the folder containing the product, and moved all the photos
to a beautiful BINS external gallery. The memory leak was corrected: the
average RAM usage dropped from about 700MB to 65MB!
But suddenly another problem raised: the zope server was restarting
itself about every 30min! I went to events.log and found that before the
Shutting down with error code 1 lines, there where an error about a
ZPhotoSlides module it couldn't load.
So, I downloaded again the ZPhotoSlides product and placed it in the
Products directory. Then I went to each of my plone sites and manually
uninstalled the ZPhotoSlides product with the uninstall tool. Finally, I
went to Zope Management Interface and deleted the ZPhotoSlides folder in
Products, and the same on the Products folder on the filesystem.

Then I restarted zope and all seemed OK.
But, the restarting period is only bigger... about 3-6h. Then Zope
crashes again and restart itself, for the same error (can't find a
ZPhotoSlides module).

Note that I didn't deleted the photo albums that where stored in the db,
because there where ratings, comments etc... and I hope to recover them
at a future ZPhotoSlides release.

SO, WHAT SHOULD I DO? I want Zope to FORGET about the EXISTENCE of
ZPhotoSLides product, WITHOUT loosing all my data!!!

Thanks!

Apparently, something in your Zope decides there is time for
an exit(1).

I would attack this situation with a C level debugger:

Attach to the running Zope process.
But a breakpoint on the C function exit.
   Let Zope continue to run...

When the something thinks it were time for exit,
you will enter the debugger and can analyse what
   this bad something is...

in line 93 of ...ZWiki/Regexps.py.

[Zope] how to programmatically control zope?

2005-09-15 Thread akonsu
hello, would someone please point me to the right direction? what is
the preferred way to control a zope server programmatically? i need to
be able to administer my zope instance from a script. add users,
change permissions, create new sites, add objects to the sites. there
is webdav, xml-rpc, what else? which one is the right way to do it? i
am a newbie i hope this is not a frequent question, at least i did not
find an answer in the documentation...

thanks

Apparently, something in your Zope decides there is time for
an exit(1).

I would attack this situation with a C level debugger:

Attach to the running Zope process.
But a breakpoint on the C function exit.
   Let Zope continue to run...

When the something thinks it were time for exit,
you will enter the debugger and can analyse what
   this bad something is...

I think this is not necessary: the event.log clearly say what is the
problem. Here is a paste:

2005-09-15T20:09:16 INFO(0) Zope Shutting down with exit code 1

This is the same error, *every time* zope server restart itself. So the
problem is that Zope can't forget ZPhotoSlides, and at a certain point
it tries to load a module that doesn't exist anymore.
I think, someone correct me please, that this module call is generated
by the remaining ZPhotoSlides objects (my old galleries, with all the
photos, comments and ratings).
At a certain point, Zope tries to *unpickle* these objects: being them
instances of a non-existing class, this unpickling generates the
deathful error and zope restart (the second after, but the interval is
less than a second as many restarts are at the exactly same time of the
error).

So my question is: if my reasoning is correct, is it possible save all
the data pickled in my ZPhotoSlides objects (waiting a future release),
avoiding the current autorestarting error???

And more: if all I have exposed is correct, that error could raise in
any zope server where a class istance was created, pickled and stored in
the ZODB, and then the class code was removed for any reason! When zope
will try to unpickle the object, it will not find the original class and
 it will crash!?

Re: [Zope] Zope Crashed please help!

2005-09-15 Thread Barry Drake
Michael,
I see that you found the problem.

Just for the record, I had the same problem a couple
of weeks ago (same symptoms anyway). I found some old
debug code that was writing to a couple of page
templates that I'd forgotten about. They had become
quite large. After deleting them Zope/Plone
performance was better than it had been for months.

Lesson learned.

[Zope] [1158] Re: Zwiki conflicts with my product

2005-09-15 Thread Simon Michael

Hi Nicholas,

I think use of the encoding argument just failed two lines above that
one, and so Dieter's suggestion may not work.

In your event log at blather severity, or on the console if you start
with zopectl fg -Xdebug-mode=on, you should see:

ZWiki... Warning: unicode() LookupError for encoding ___, WikiNames
will not use the system locale

What is the encoding it reports there ? Is it trying a strange one due
to your product setting the locale ? (usually not recommended,
incidentally..)

It shouldn't crash of course. As a workaround you could try:

 lang, encoding = None, None

at line 79. Feel free to take this to http://zwiki.org/1158 if you like.

Oops, I didn't get it quite right. You won't see that, but hopefully you
can see how to tweak the code to find out the encoding it's attempting
to use.
