Just to close this thread out. I finally have a windows 10 vm installed and can
confirm what everyone has been telling me with regard to running multiple
instances of 4D.
1. Using shift click in the task bar and Menu as well as double clicking a
shortcut on the desktop - Works only with 64bit

"4D Developer" mean desktop with design mode.
in other words, not 4D Remote, 4D Volume Desktop or 4D Server.
I think 4D v11 SQL actually had that name.
I guess so many things are called "4D" it sometimes needs a qualifier...

Win 7 I've resorted to duplicate the folder.
Just tried the "Run as admin" and, agreed, no joy.

have you tried to duplicate the 4D folder under Programs (or ProgramsX86)? and
then create aliases to each 4D.exe. Then try to run them.
At least that’s how I do on OS X, have not tried on Windows, maybe it works
there too.
