You need to enable IDE mode in the bios before installing xp.
Because,windows xp does not have the sata drivers for supporting the sata

It is certainly possible to install Windows XP on XPS Studio machines. I am
currently using one. However, Dell sells these machines with Windows Vista
preinstalled. I had to uninstall Vista and downgrade it to XP, and in the
process had a host of problems finding suitable drivers.
