I installed yesterdays 2.6.16-rc3. It detects an
ATI board, but I still have double timer interrupts,
the PIT is not turned off. Apperently the reason is

echo mem > /sys/power/state
and
echo standby > /sys/power/state
first mem:
box went down, usb mouse, video fans shut off.

Stathis - The function that brings up the card is in mptbase.c => mpt_attach().
