Hi,
on two older machines (pre-2000 motherboards) reboot is possible, but
poweroff is NOT.
On is running XUBUNTU 6.10 Edgy Eft, which brings XUBUNTU back into
play.
The other one was running XUBUNTU 6.10 Edgy Eft, and is now running a
fresh install of XUBUNTU 7.04 Feisty Fawn.
So for me this is

To refer back to Morgan's post, I use Kubuntu Feisty and it doesn't power
down but it restarts without a problem. It was the same with Dapper and
Edgy, the only difference with these two was that there was a short click at
the end. As far as I remember Breezy powered down and restarted normally.

I did mention earlier that my Kubuntu release was Feisty and am
certainly not going to downgrade to Xubuntu Edgy after getting attached
to some of Feisty's best points.
However, now that you two mention it, a full history of all my *Buntu
usage does present a very interesting pattern.

Dapper used to work (not in the pre-releases though).

For me, sometimes it works (several times in a row) and then it does not
work anymore. I did not figure out quite what exactly is different from
case to case.
This should just be mentioned to emphasise that yes, it could be some
software component used by KDE and/or Gnome but not by Xfce that make
Let me state my experience again which corresponds to the bug status in
the different kernel versions for Dapper, Edgy and Feisty:
Dapper could not power off or reboot for me. (Sony Vaio VGN-S460)
Edgy could reboot but not power off for me.
Feisty can reboot and can power off - fixed for me.
