I can report that the patch from comment #75 also works for me (running 2.6.33

I'm running Lucid beta.
I was pleasantly surprised to find Lucid closed down normally after two
years of forced close-downs, although I did get a crash message about an
"unkillable shutdown applet" (if I recall correctly).
