Sorry, my asus a2500h is defunct... i cannot try on it.
Therefore, I think that this problem was caused by an hardware difect... and

Sorry about the delay. On the Ubuntu 8.04 beta live cd, the module does load

can you try with Option "DRI" "Off" in your xorg.conf
this will rule out the drm kernel driver and at least place the issue up with X
itself.
