Mike,
Well, there is some half-truth there. To implement and use the AD
Client (Directory Services Client) for Windows NT 4.0, SP6a is a
pre-requisite. You're not going to get full use of the directory, but
you are going to get participation in Domain Dfs, password change on any
DC, and use of
All,
Am currently trying
to roll out XP Professional to a testbed using RIS and keep getting an error
message "The File ASMS on Windows XP Professional CD-Rom is needed". I have
looked at Q311755, to no avail, I used the original CD-Rom to create the
image and I don't want to have to goto
Joshua,
Ummm Can't add much here. The domain and records are hosted on your
DNS, so the redirection of the name server records at NetSol should be
it.
You have a minimum of two DNS for this purpose, right?
Good luck!

You do not need sp6 for workstations or member servers in native mode.
These will continue to work. You will need SP6a if you are installing the
Active Directory Client extensions for NT 4.

That is it. Just make sure you can successfully do NSLookups to the server
from the inet. Make sure you secure the server and lock it down. Make sure
you are setup as the primary server for your zone. Make sure you have all
your records "copied" over from the ISP for your zone. That should be

Yes, the new DC would also need to be made a GC to avoid
this.
In
large multi-domain environments it is probably not a good idea to make all your
DCs GCs. With each GC added the replication traffic increases because all
GCs need to be kept up to date with changes
As well as the AD patch off the w2k cd, I believe...

AD is in Native Mode. Can someone tell me if this is a true statement?

So I'm
OK with going with name that is unrelated to the org but I'm unclear on what
advantage this gives me. Or are you just saying go with a name totally
unrealted and stick with it as you grow? Our DNS is external (split) so
that isn't an issue. DNS is just for int

If you have a small organisationit's okay but
it is always a good idea to separate DNS from mail servers.

Diane,
The

Ah so
your saying 2 DCs for each tree in a forest correct? This makes sense I'm

IIRC, you need to have one non-GC to support the infrastructure master
FSMO role. I've been going be the recommendation the the Infrastructure
master should be on a non GC but for a domain of 20 users it might not be an
issue.

I don't understand how you would
have one DC with ADI dns and the other with a primary dns in the same domain.
If it's ADI it's ADI on all
