how can you tell when files are part of an aggregate ?
it seems that files , part of an aggregate, are not backed up (not to the
storage pool and not to the 'nextstgpool') when
size of this aggregate is larger than maxfilesize parameter !
is there a workaround other than setting maxfilesi

Yes, there is an old ADSM client for linux, which was unsupported but
worked OK. Just do a search for it on google.
You should be able to run the newer clients but am unsure about licensing
issues.

Veritas did a comparison to TSM last yr. but it has
numerous errors in reference to what TSM can do that
they say it can't. I've highlighted the major issues
but haven't publicly sent out the entire comparision
as these are consulting svcs that I get paid for.

Unfortunately archiving is not going to work because it will create
redundant copies of unchanged files every week which raises his storage
costs. Unlimited 5 year retentions of backups would have the same
effect. He doesn't have a file system structure that lends itself to
archiving

acceptor and remote client agent executables are indeed installed on the
system. It's the *configuration* of the associated services (a.k.a.
"installing the services") that is not performed at software install time.

generates other problems with offsite copy pools.

I have seen core dumps on other UNIX clients (AIX and Sun Solaris) when the
password file was corrupted. In this case, the commandline worked fine and
the GUI core dumped.
Just delete the /etc/adsm directory and try again.
