I came in the middle of this thread but from the subject line it looks
like someone needs to know how to disable backup/archive activity. I use
disable session to stop all backup/archive activity and lock node / unlock
node for just a specific machine.

In my experience, you have to wait until the media mounts before the
session or process will end. As soon as the media mounts, the session
will then end. You could halt the server and restart the TSM server1
service (or reboot your server)

instructions from Oracle/Hyperion what shows the backup strategies for the

If you backup a V.M., you still need to install the windows client on each
VM in order to get the file updates so there are no savings on licenses.
We have about 20 VMs now which are backed up using VCB (Virtual
Consolidated Backup).

We tried subfile backups as a matter of trying to reduce the amount of
data being sent across our network and discovered that sometimes errors
would occur during the backup. We never tested a save. The errors during
backup changed our mind in doing backups this way.

90% of our servers are VMs with the exception of TSM. We are running 5.4
with 166 clients. We are considering converting our TSM server to a VM
also but it was not recommended by the IBM storage expert we worked with.
We will likely do it anyway to test it and see if we have any problems.

We always test with another test server. I have such a server under my
desk now waiting. It will become our Disaster Recovery server with TSM
already installed and waiting to go in the event of a real disaster. The
DR server will be kept offsite.
