You must use both the client scheduler (scheduler listens for
connections) and the TSM Server central scheduler which is actually
initiating the scheduler.

For some reason TSM thinks the client connected at a higher level than

The easiest thing I can think of to fix this would be to install a newer

1) Updated the password definition on the new server
2) Make sure your existing client is actually pointing to the new TSM
server (dsm.sys)
3) If the passwords are different on each TSM server then the TSM client
scheduler will have to be updated on the client. You can use the wizard
or the dsmc
If you are trying to dynamically allocate drives, then you will need to
setup a library manager (the existing TSM host) and a library client
(new TSM host). Then whenever hostB needs access to a tape drive it
will make a request to hostA for a mount point.

All,
Does TSM write to SMF records during startup on OS/390? If so, which
SMF records does it right to?

I have several customers running this type of configuration. It's not
really an issue. I would recommend using the latest revision of the
client though that supports that specific OS version.

Absolutely, you can ) launch 2 separate TSM sessions, 2) have the back
and archive copy groups point to either the disk or tape pool
respectively.

All,
I watched my customer load the 5.1.5.0 client over a 5.1.1 on a Dell
2550 W2K SP2 system. He performed a reboot as requested by the
installer and when the system tried to IPL it crashed with a Blue Screen
of Death:

What I typically do in this situation is to delete ALL the tape drives
and adapters from AIX "rmdev -dl rmt*" and "rmdev -dl fcs*"
Then I run cfgmr to pick up the new devices. I have never run into the
situation where there was a drive disappearing such as this after a
simple ML upgrade.

I know for sure it doesn't backup /tmp by default. I not sure about
/usr/spool or /proc though.

It is a good practice to restart your system after doing a maintenance

If you look through your activity log you will see when the disk storage
pool fills up it will automatically get migrated to tape based upon the
low and high water migration values.
Ideally you would like to have enough disk space to backup all your
clients to disk w/out triggering a migration un
What you need to do is to launch the Backup-Archive GUI interface (dsm)
and from there select "Show Active and Inactive Files." From there you
will need to scroll through all the files backed up for that specific
node. Hopefully your user knows in what general area that file was
backed up in.
