Just make sure that you meet the bit rate and payload requirements of 101.141.
If you can't do that, getting the "widest channel you can" would be problematic.

Thing about the energy that strikes is to channel that energy or
disperse it somewhere it

If absolutely all the electronics are at the bottom, having just antennas
and waveguide at the tower, I think it ahould be almost impossible to have
a lightning strike damage gear.

Yes - each portion of the tower had it’s own isolated grounds besides the tower
itself. These went into a grounding grid built around the base of the site.
The guy wires were of course all grounded out into their own grids
Seems pointless not to ask for the widest channel you can get. Unless
you're absolutely sure you're never going to need more bandwidth, then I
guess you could be nice and try to leave some more spectrum open, but if
there's even a tiny chance you're going to ever need more capacity, I'd

Concise but not succinct ...there is no bullet proof solution. Best
practices within budget allocated for location in question.

So, was the tower mounted equipment isolated with its own ground wire?
Curious about the improper isolation at the entry point.
What was the proper way and what did the improper installation do to violate
that?

I’ve only ever encountered one tower (at former job) that was pretty
“bulletproof” …
The tower was 350ft and located on the highest elevation for about 100 square

how many times a year it took a hit but would
I would think the answers depend on the part of the country you are in.
Florida has lightning like nowhere else. Northern mountain sites have ice
falls.
Coastal areas have salty fogs etc. And everywhere you have ass-hats that work
for other companies that may mess up your installation.

Yes, I have been looking at the matrix. It appears that almost all of them
will work with a 2 foot dish at up to perhaps 10 miles.
So the question will be what to ask for on the license. I presume I should ask
for the widest channel I can get.

No such thing as a bullet proof tower. At least not in my area. All the
over-engineering in the world can't stop a direct strike. Some days you get
lucky, some days not. It's a roll of the dice.
