Re: java atk wrapper in bookworm
Hi, I am now confused. Samuel wrote that ubuntu has removed a patch which is needed to load atk-wrapper into jre. openjdk-17 has the mentioned issue openjdk-19-jre:amd64 works as expected regarding atk-wrapper. tested on a machine running ubuntu 22.04. Was the patch only removed for jre-17? Any way I see no other jre in debian bookworm except jre-17. The simple answer is that it just does not work when using the debian- (or ubuntu-) provided packages. And that is the scenario that I was reporting. I have no idea what package they actually used to "reproduce" my scenario. My best guess is that they either used their own build that might be include some patch that happens to fix the issue. Or that they didn't manage to actually enable the atk bridge (so as to actually see the load failure). But I didn't get any answer from Oracle when I gave them the exact details of what I was doing with ubuntu-only packages. And at this point I don't think I can hope to see them actually try to run orca and see that java applications are just not accessible. I mean, they asked for a reproducer application. That just shows that they don't actually understand what "accessible" means, since it's all java applications which are impacted. Without an actual accessibility contact, I don't see how we can get things through. Samuel
[BRLTTY] brltty 6.6: reliable but slow cursorrouting in debian with the a2 screendriver
Hi, sorry for my previous post about not working cursor routing. It seems to be an Issue in Ubuntu. Now I have a working debian bookworm setup which performs well :-). The only thing which is not perfect is the speed of the routing when using EG xfce4-terminal. It would be great if this can be speeded up a bit. Thx. Hi Folks, a few months ago I've tested a beta or rc of bookworm with java-atk-wrapper and it worked. After bookworm was released something is wrong on my machine or in bookworm. When I enable assistive_technologies=org.GNOME.Accessibility.AtkWrapper in accessibility.properties My Application doesn't start any more. The error is that it can't find the needed stuff of libatk-wrapper. Could you please test to use an app which uses atk-wrapper EG.: mediathekview? Thx in Advance. Halim

[BRLTTY] Keyboard support HandyTech braille star 80 in brltty
Hi Folks, I've connected a Keyboard to my braillestar and use brltty 6.3. The display is connected via usb or serial (both tested). The keyboard works well most of the time but. 1. sometimes the pc doesn't get keyreleases reliably This results in blocked keyboard or hanging arrowkeys etc. 2. Somethimes the braille display freezes completely so it want a restart and switching to extern keyboard and back. to work again in brltty. Any ideas? Hi again, if you're using a desktop as well you can reconfigure pulseaudio to store it's socket in /tmp. That way you can access one running pulseaudio from diferent user accounts. The reason for that is that brltty simply reads what's on the screen. It's primary anchor point is the cursor. However: There's a setting you might want to try. In the Navigation Options submenu you'll find a setting called Track Screen Scroll. It tries to do what I think you want. It's known to work very well for IM screens. It works by remembering the content of the current line, i.e. the line you're reading in braille (not the line wehre the cursor is). As long as that line is on the screen, things tend to be okay. It has two weak points. One is if the current line's content also occurs on other lines, which means that it can't tell which line of all of those it should be following. The other is if the current line scrolls off the screen. Hmm has no effect here speech stopps when screen starts to scroll. The conntent on the brailledisplay is not affected only speech stopps working. Regards halim ___ This message was sent via the BRLTTY mailing list. Hi, just for understanding the reason why should brltty with a2 screen driver read widgets outside gnome / xfce /lxde /mate terminal? Does atspi provide information from which application the content is comming from? I would prefer orca to read all thing ousdide terminals and brltty with a2 screendriver read only things coming from the mentioned terminals. So we could use the best from both worlds. Hi Dave, Yes, brltty should talk when a user enables speech. But It should _only_ talk in xfce/mate/gnome terminals and not when using the graphical desktop. Re: Pluseaudio, speech-dispatcher, and console + graphical screen readers
Hi, I am not sure if I got it right. If you want to shutdown connection to pa every time after speechoutput this will produce latency and would reduce responsiveness of speechd. Responsiveness is an important thing for a11y Applications. Maybe there is an easy fix for accessible installations of debian: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#ALSA.2Fdmix_without_grabbing_hardware_device These steps could be configured if someone installs debian with brltty or with speech. Please try it out! Regards Halim
error in speech-dispatcher init script in debian stable
Hi, if [ x$RUN != xyes ... will not allow to enable speechd in /etc/default/speech-dispatcher when setting RUN=yes I am aware that running speechd in system mode is not recommended but I see no reliable working setup for using plain text consoles. Using pulseaudio for speechd will not work with eg. brltty's speech output. Today I tried to install xfce. All worked fine except sound through pulseaudio. It started muted and I was not able to get sound. I am using a sblive which should allow concurent sound output. Re: restart of brltty not working correctly
Hi Samuel, I've did more testing and found that must be an issue in the systemd service file of brltty. Have looked into the brltty debug file but don't see any critical output. orca and iceweasel in debian wheezy not working well since iceweasel 31 upgrade
hi, Currently orca doesn't work very well with currently shipped iceweasel 31 version in debian stable. I was told that a mapping should be added to orca for loading the correct firefox script. I did some testing and found that some tracesbacks in orca don't happen. The mentioned addition doesn't fix all problems :-(. It's hard to describe it but it's not usable in it's current combination. systemd and accessible vt's
Hi all, Last week I've read about a rfc in systemd which tries to implement vt in userspace. In that case config_vt in kernel don't need to be set. If someone tries to remove vt support from kernel completely we.ll loose a great, stable environment. Afaik sbl and brltty depend on /dev/vcs* /dev/tty* /dev/console ... to read the plain console. Perhaps it will never replace plain vt in kernel but: In the past we got many other projects which were developed with great new features but they produced many a11y related bugs. What do you think? BRLTTY and SBL could then run as less-privileged processes and wouldn't need root privileges therefore. Well if someone writes new screereading routines for that this might be true but: It should now the time to figure out: * how early boot messages should be read No not really, First step would be how to implement screenreading in such environment. * what happens after the user logs in: * e.g. end the login-specific screen reader and replace it through a user-specific instance (as with orca) Now and here comes the point I don't like. Currently I don't know any distro which has got this setup running stable for endusers. My PC in the office starts orca in gdm3. That process hangs and consumes 100% cpu power after login to gnome. and so forth. If we find a solution, we actually get a better experience than before. Well I am not sure about this. It's more an oportunity, I think. Perhaps if screenreading would be possible in their environment. Re: Accessibility as a reason to switch to XFCE?
Hi all, In my point of view debian should really change it's default desktop to xfce because of the systemd requirement of gnome. I am not happy with current situation but debian support other os's as well and systemd is only available for Linux. At this time I.ll whant to say thx to all people who work on a11y in gnome and debian. Unfortunately some guys in gnome project made anoying decisions. Most are design related. A big mistake is the decision for systemd dependency. It's really bad that new software like systemd or pulseaudio will make things hard to handle in linux based systems. Pulseaudio broke a11y for console screenreaders few years ago and I see no work in that area. Systemd will force gnome to use the linux kernel and so other systems like bsd's will get trouble to use it. @Mario: +1 it was a bad time to freeze wheezy and ship gnome 3.4 but we should make it better in next stable :-).
