Re: java atk wrapper in bookworm

2023-09-26 Thread Halim Sahin

Hi,
I am now confused.
Samuel wrote that ubuntu has removed a patch which is needed to load
atk-wrapper into jre.

openjdk-17 has the mentioned issue
openjdk-19-jre:amd64 works as expected regarding atk-wrapper.
tested on a machine running ubuntu 22.04.

Was the patch only removed for jre-17?

Any way I see no other jre in debian bookworm except jre-17.

The simple answer is that it just does not work when using the debian-
(or ubuntu-) provided packages. And that is the scenario that I was
reporting.

I have no idea what package they actually used to "reproduce" my
scenario. My best guess is that they either used their own build that
might be include some patch that happens to fix the issue. Or that they
didn't manage to actually enable the atk bridge (so as to actually see
the load failure). But I didn't get any answer from Oracle when I gave
them the exact details of what I was doing with ubuntu-only packages.

And at this point I don't think I can hope to see them actually try to
run orca and see that java applications are just not accessible.

I mean, they asked for a reproducer application. That just shows that
they don't actually understand what "accessible" means, since it's all
java applications which are impacted. Without an actual accessibility
contact, I don't see how we can get things through.

[BRLTTY] brltty 6.6: reliable but slow cursorrouting in debian with the a2 screendriver

2023-09-19 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
sorry for my previous post about not working cursor routing.
It seems to be an Issue in Ubuntu.

Now I have a working debian bookworm setup which performs well :-).

The only thing which is not perfect is the speed of the routing when
using EG xfce4-terminal.
It would be great if this can be speeded up a bit.
Thx.

java atk wrapper in bookworm

2023-09-19 Thread Halim Sahin

Hi Folks,
a few months ago I've tested a beta or rc of bookworm with
java-atk-wrapper and it worked.

After bookworm was released something is wrong on my machine or in bookworm.
When I enable
assistive_technologies=org.GNOME.Accessibility.AtkWrapper
in accessibility.properties
My Application doesn't start any more.
The error is that it can't find the needed stuff of libatk-wrapper.

Could you please test to use an app which uses atk-wrapper
EG.: mediathekview?

Thx in Advance.

Hi,

My suggestion is Debian.

I am having many issues with latest ubuntu LTS.
At least for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS it took me much time to get my displays to

In my opinion don't use ubuntu!

[BRLTTY] Q: howto use screendriver a2 and braille output only for terminal output?

2023-07-09 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
is there a configuration option for brltty which restricts the
brailleoutput only to terminal output like autospeak-threshold for
speech?

Current situation on my machines is that brltty also tries to give some
braille output for non-Terminal apps like gedit or mousepad etc.
BTW.: my autospeak-threshold is set to good.
Brltty doesn't speak anything in gedit except the line indentation.

[BRLTTY] some trouble with handy tech braillestar 80 and the connected keyboard with brltty 6.5

2023-06-12 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi list,
I've connected an usb keyboard with a ps/2 converter to my braillestar
80.

This way I can use the display with two different machines.

It works for me most of the time with following issues:

1. some times brltty doesn't reliable get key releases.
In that case typing isn't possible when EG. the left alt or right alt
hangs etc.
In other cases the last pressed key was repeated until pressing a key
again.

2. selecting the some keytable in brltty.conf doesn't work here.
I've tested EG the desktop keytable.

Whn using the learn mode of brltty I get always same output when
pressing down different keys.
PASSAT: AT (set 2) keyboard-scancode [\XF0]

3. some times the Keyboard hangs completely and I have to switch to
external / internal mode in braillestar 80 to get the keyboard working
again.

BTW.: The usb keyboard works reliable when connnecting it directly with the
machine.

If you can give some advice please do :-).

Hi,

I am currently testing brltty from git with a el80s Display from

brltty was started using run-brltty command in the build tree.

It works great until I tried to use suspend function (suspend to ram).
When the laptop wakes up brltty shows nothing on the braille display.

Any sugestions / Ideas what causes this?

It might also be helpful when a user with same display could test this
as well.

[BRLTTY] screen-driver a2: invalid async handle when trying to use cursorrouting

2023-03-30 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,

cursor routing no longer works in current brltty when using
screen-driver a2 in Terminal (gnome-terminal and xfce4-terminal) tested.

The only thing i see is invalid async handle in debug log and a segfault
in dmesg.

It would be great if this could be fixed.

Maybe it's a Problem in ubuntu lts but I've also tried brltty 6.5
without success.

Debug log attached.
Please let me know If you need more / other information.
My used brailledisplay is a Handytech braillestar 80.
BTW.: routing works in tty, only in X it doesn't.

[BRLTTY] Q: brltty and udev rules

2023-03-01 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
it seems my laptop tries to run brltty
with a systemd unit and there are also udev rules in /lib/udev/rules.d

After disabling the systemd unit with
systemctl disable brltty

my cursor routing in brltty seems to work for now.

The question remains that is the systemd unit an old unremoved one from
the upgrade process or is it needed for running brltty correctly?

Thx in advance.

2023-02-14 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi Folks,
Yesterday I upgraded my machine to ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

Brltty version is now 6.4.

In the terminal I run brltty -b ba -x a2 -s sd -N

Following message is from dmesg:

[BRLTTY] Keyboard support HandyTech braille star 80 in brltty

2023-01-21 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi Folks,

I've connected a Keyboard to my braillestar and use brltty 6.3.
The display is connected via usb or serial (both tested).

The keyboard works well most of the time but.

1. sometimes the pc doesn't get keyreleases reliably
This results in blocked keyboard or hanging arrowkeys etc.

2. Somethimes the braille display freezes completely so it want a
restart and switching to extern keyboard and back. to work again in
brltty.

Any ideas?
Regards
Halim

I agree with christian.
Brltty should report the selected char and not the changed one.
This would be the expected behaviour also comprared with other
screenreaders.

In Editors the expected behavour would be to read the complete Line.
I don't know idf this might be configurable in brltty.

Where does brltty expect the socket if running with the root user?

Hi Samuel,

yes it is ctrl+shift+v and xbrlapi is running as well.

I thought, that brltty is using its own clipboard so that never worked
here.

But I don't need to have the clipboard merged so I thought that brltty
uses it's own clipboard.

it happens with all pastes if you do not hit space between the pastes.

[BRLTTY] again cut and paste problem with brltty and at-spi screen driver

2022-01-31 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
could someone please test the following described issue with brltty
6.4?

My machine runs ubuntu 20.04 with brltty 6.0.

Example:
copy the string with brltty in to clipboard and paste the contents.
 /abcd/

 Result:
/

Brltty changes the first slash with &.

This only happens when using a2 screendriver.
Tested in xfce4-terminal.

[BRLTTY] BUG: cut and paste problem

2022-01-17 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,

I don't know if was intended behaviour :-(.

If a user has some text copied in to brltty's clipboard and accidentaly
hits cupslock, brltty pastes the copied text in uppercase as well.

In my opinion brltty should paste the copied text unmodified.

Tested with latest brltty from git.

A second thing is: Brltty doesn't check the presence of
python3-setuptools in the configure script.

This produces an error in the build process of the python stuff.

Re: [BRLTTY] Making brltty speak

2021-12-08 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi again,

if you're using a desktop as well you can reconfigure pulseaudio to
store it's socket in /tmp.
That way you can access one running pulseaudio from diferent user
accounts.

Another dirty hack is to set dmix for pulseaudio.
That way it can not block the audio device and speechd can use alsa
at the same time with pulseaudio.

To get this working edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and search the line
#load-module module-alsa-sink

uncomment that line by remove the # and change it to
load-module module-alsa-sink device=dmix

a 3rd method:
set a symlink so that user root can use speech-dispatcher of the desktop
user.

1. logon as root
2.
ln -sf /run/user/1000/speech-dispatcher/speechd.sock
~/.cache/speech-dispatcher/speechd.sock

In Ubuntu 20.04 LTS> I use the last described setup.

[BRLTTY] papenmeier el80s and cut and paste

Hi,
I am interested to know if someone could test cut and paste with a braillex el80s.
On my machine at work it doesn't work for me. in Ubuntu 20.04 (brltty 6.0).
Same ubuntu version and using a Handy Tech Braillestar 80 is works as expected.
I.ll try to test it with latest git version as well soon.
Maybe someone else uses that device and could help?

[BRLTTY] OT: BrlAPI connection through rdp

2021-09-12 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi folks,

since some time I am looking for a solution to use my brailledisplay
with a rdp session.

The only thing I've got running is to stop brltty, load the kernel
drivers ftdi_sio and usbserial and redirect /dev/ttyUSB0 to the remote
machine. This works with freerdp-x11.

Doing it that Way isn't much practicable.
Stopping brltty is bad if something goes wrong and then you have no
chance to get feedback in braille from the client machine.

If you know a better way to do that please
help!

Re: [BRLTTY] brltty and speech

2021-08-31 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi Dave,

it would be a great start if we could improve existing speech features.

First:
with autospeak enabled try to read a info page like

info bash

then type and hold down arrow key

Result: brlltty stops reading the selected line

An other thing is when using the a2 screendriver:
The message not an at-spi2 text widget should be dropped
or it should be configurable.

my last point for now is the stuff with the focus for a2 screen driver
parameter which should
be re-added :-).

java-atk-wrapper: which files ar used in /run/user/1000/*

Hi,

when a running desktop crashs or a user does
sudo systemctl lightdm restart

a11y including orca etc works as expected.
Only java apps which use atk-wrapper is completely inaccessible.

Then removing all files in /run/user/1000/* works or a full reboot.

My Question is: which files are needed by java-atk-wrapper?

It could be an issue of atk-wrapper if it can't determine some
interfaces and use obsolete sockets etc.

Thx in Advance.

Re: [BRLTTY] Using BRLTTY with Orbit Reader 20 on Android and Windows with NVDA

2021-06-08 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
How did you install brltty on windows?

brltty can be installed in windows which works fine here in my qemu
based windows vm.

Press windows+u and select install brltty there.

You have to select your braille driver there as well.

Last Step is to enable brlapi service in windows.
Per default brlapi service starts only with narrator.

Press windows+r and type
services.msc
Find the brlapi service and change it's start behaviour.

yes

The reason for that is that brltty simply reads what's on the screen. It's
primary anchor point is the cursor. However:

There's a setting you might want to try. In the Navigation Options submenu
you'll find a setting called Track Screen Scroll. It tries to do what I think
you want. It's known to work very well for IM screens.

It works by remembering the content of the current line, i.e. the line you're
reading in braille (not the line wehre the cursor is). As long as that line is
on the screen, things tend to be okay. It has two weak points. One is if the
current line's content also occurs on other lines, which means that it can't
tell which line of all of those it should be following. The other is if the
current line scrolls off the screen.

Hmm has no effect here speech stopps when screen starts to scroll.

The conntent on the brailledisplay is not affected only speech stopps
working.

Hi,
just for understanding the reason why should brltty with a2 screen driver read  widgets outside gnome / xfce /lxde /mate terminal?
Does atspi provide information from which application the  content is comming from?
I would prefer orca to read all  thing ousdide terminals and brltty  with a2 screendriver
read  only things coming from the  mentioned terminals.
So we could  use the best from both worlds.
I hope Chris can give us feedback about brltty 6.3 and the type parameter. My brltty 6.0 does not read something outside terminals which is ok for me.

Hi Dave,
Yes, brltty should talk when a user enables speech. But It should _only_ talk in xfce/mate/gnome terminals and not when using the graphical desktop.
On my Machine brltty 6.0 is in use in ubuntu 20.04 and that version of brltty works as described.
I think the work on a2 driver in brltty 6.1 is the problem here.

I run qemu in xfce4-terminal and don't use wayland.

I run qemu like this:

#!/bin/bash
export WINDOWPATH=${WINDOWPATH:+${WINDOWPATH}:}$WINDOWID
qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -display curses \
-full-screen -m 4G -soundhw hda \
-usb -device usb-braille,chardev=char0 -chardev braille,id=char0 \
-drive file=myimage.img,if=virtio

tested with netinst iso as well.
I see no braille output.

I just tried it and it worked.

Just to make sure: did you press enter to pass the boot menu?

yes.

Maybe its a problem with brltty 6.0 orca libbrlapi on the host?
Does brlapi write a log where we can see if qemu connects to brltty or not?

It seems a bug slipped in indeed for the non-sdl display case. You can
run

Yes if you write a speech-dispatcher generic module for txt2pho and mbrola
and add it to speechd.conf

Note that there already exists an espeak-mbrola-generic.conf file using
the generic module, to do this.

Yes but it doesn't use txt2pho which produces better german phonemes

What about using espeak's mbrola phoneme generation? This avoids yet another

My prefered setup doesn't restart alsa streams in pa.
Pa is installed and can be used in the graphical desktop etc.
Speech-dispatcher uses alsa.

2015-09-30 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
I am not sure if I got it right.
If you want to shutdown connection to pa every time after speechoutput
this will produce latency and would reduce responsiveness of speechd.
Responsiveness is an important thing for a11y Applications.

Maybe there is an easy fix for accessible installations of debian:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#ALSA.2Fdmix_without_grabbing_hardware_device
These steps could be configured if someone installs debian with brltty
or with speech.
Please try it out!

correct firefox script.
I did some testing and found that some tracesbacks in orca don't happen.
The mentioned addition doesn't fix all problems :-(.
It's hard to describe it but it's not usable in it's current
combination.

I am now thinking about upgrading to testing.

Halim

Re: solution to the problem of orca and gecko not working in non-gnome environment

2014-03-11 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
I would prefer to fix it in debian's directory structure and not in
iceweasel package.
It should be possible to use an upstream firefox without recompiling it
under debian when using xfce etc.
Just my two cents.
MfG.

systemd and accessible vt's

2013-12-03 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi all,
Last week I've read about a rfc in systemd which tries to implement vt
in userspace.
In that case config_vt in kernel don't need to be set.
If someone tries to remove vt support from kernel completely we.ll loose
a great, stable environment.
Afaik sbl and brltty depend on /dev/vcs* /dev/tty* /dev/console ...
to read the plain console.

Perhaps it will never replace plain vt in kernel but:
In the past we got many other projects which were developed with great
new features but they produced many a11y related bugs.

What do you think?
Regards
Halim

This is not fully true, though. BRLTTY and SBL could then run as
 less-privileged
processes and wouldn't need root privileges therefore.

Well if someone writes new screereading routines for that this might be
true but:

It should now the time to
 figure out:

 * how early boot messages should be read

No not really,
First step would be how to implement screenreading in such environment.

 * what happens after the user logs in:
 * e.g. end the login-specific screen reader and replace it through a
   user-specific instance (as with orca)

Now and here comes the point I don't like.
Currently I don't know any distro which has got this setup running
stable for endusers.
My PC in the office starts orca in gdm3.
That process hangs and consumes 100% cpu power after login to gnome.

and so forth. If we find a solution, we actually get a better experience than
 before.

Well I am not sure about this.

It's more an oportunity, I think.

Perhaps if screenreading would be possible in their environment.

[vdr] a bit OT: receiving free iptv channels in germany

2013-11-10 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
Using the iptv plugin I tried to watch some german Stations like das
Erste, Phoenix etc.
It seems unfortunately that only entertain provides these channels and
(I don't have it).

Is there a way to watch these stations without t-home entertain?

Some working examples for channels.conf would be great!
Have a nice Day.

Halim

Re: Accessibility as a reason to switch to XFCE?

2013-11-09 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi all,
In my point of view debian should really change it's default desktop to
xfce because of the systemd requirement of gnome.
I am not happy with current situation but debian support other os's as
well and systemd is only available for Linux.

At this time I.ll whant to say thx to all people who work on a11y in
gnome and debian. Unfortunately some guys in gnome project made anoying
decisions.
Most are design related.
A big mistake is the decision for systemd dependency.

It's really bad that new software like systemd or pulseaudio will make
things hard to handle in linux based systems.

Pulseaudio broke a11y for console screenreaders few years ago and I see
no work in that area. Systemd will force gnome to use the linux kernel
and so other systems like bsd's will get trouble to use it.

@Mario:
+1 it was a bad time to freeze wheezy and ship gnome 3.4 but we should
make it better in next stable :-).
Just my two cents.

Problem running lxde and iceweasel in wheezy

2013-07-06 Thread Halim Sahin
Hi,
Ok it seems gnome-3.4 is not much usable in wheezy due to posted
stability problems.
Unfortunately xfce
is at 4.8.
so I installed lxde and got a11y working except iceweasel.
What I did:
export GNOME_ACCESSIBILITY=1
export MOZILLA_ACCESSIBILITY=1
export GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge

Now iceweasel report when started in terminal gtk accessibility module
initialized.
Thats it.
Orca can't read anything inside firefox/iceweasel.
I have also tested a plain firefox from mozilla.org (same result).
Any idea what's wrong there?
Thx in advance.
Halim
