i installed alsa driver with intel8x0 support. all is fine,

Ok. That could be the reason since I have 2 versions
of gcc. I have gcc-2.96 which could be used by the
up2date program which I thought was a precompiled
package. I havent compiled the new kernel.. And I use
the gcc-3.1 to compile the alsa driver. I cant think
that redhat has used an old gcc compil

can't record anything. I just get silence.
I've checked the settings in alsamixer; capture is enabled and I can hear the
input at the output, but nothing actually gets recorded. Playback of

I had to reinstall alsa , and all compilations driver,
lib,utils went fine.
But when I run XMMS the maschine hangs with the
keyboard blinking and I have to push the reset button.

If you are sure your card chipset are supported and u complied --with-cards=(your chipset) you can unmute the alsamixer to see if it help. Else your card is probably not supported.
